About the surrounding area of Villa ProtonSurrounded by the lush greenery of the garden and panoramic sea views, Villa Proton is well-situated a short distance from Chania in a Cretan village boasting a supermarket, tavernas, and historic sites including an olive mill, Venetian wells, and a folklore museum.
Several spectacular beaches are close at hand, including Omprogialos Beach and Koutalas Beach. The beach is ideal for relaxation and families thanks to its golden sand, clear water, and protection from the elements.
The nearby Elephant Cave is an extraordinary diving spot, and the Archaeological Site of Aptera can be found on the drive to Chania. Aptera was once one of the most important city-states in Crete. Located on a plateau above Souda Bay, the site boasts ruins of the city fortifications, Roman cisterns and houses, a double-parted sanctuary, and even an ancient necropolis.
Chania itself is one of Crete’s two main cities. Walk through the old port’s picturesque alleys and historic neighbourhoods, stroll along to its 16th-century lighthouse and indulge yourself in the irresistible Cretan atmosphere and cuisine. Check out Chania’s Municipal Gardens to enjoy a cup of traditional Greek coffee in one of the island’s oldest and most atmospheric cafeterias, the Kipos Café.
Crete is a fantastic place for hiking, perhaps most notably in the Samaria Gorge where you’ll find the deserted village of Samaria along with breath-taking natural landscapes and a wide range of flora and fauna including the rare species of wild goat known as the kri-kri.

Best Suited For: All AgesThere are many great family-friendly beaches in Chania and no shortage within a short distance from Villa Proton. However, if you feel like venturing farther afield, why not check out Platanias Beach on the western side of Chania. This long and sandy stretch has plenty of tourist facilities including water sports, lifeguards, eateries, and more.
Another fantastic option is Lake Kournas which offers a mellow day out with the young ones. This is the only freshwater lake on Crete, and its circumference can be walked in around an hour – making it small enough. The lake is also a great swim spot, or you can hire pedalos.
Horse riding at Deres Village is a fantastic option for kids of all ages. The company runs tours for riders of all levels of experience and what each tour has in common is stunning scenery as you climb through olive groves and gaze down through deep valleys and the open expanse of sea beyond.
If you’re looking to mix a bit of education into your children’s holiday experience there is no shortage of fantastic museums and sights, including the Archaeological Museum of Chania and the Maritime Museum of Chania. Or if natural history is more to the children’s liking, a short drive to the village of Ano Vouves provides the opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the oldest olive trees in the world. Though the tree’s exact age is unknown, conservative estimates place its age at over 2,000 years, while scientists from the University of Crete have estimated it to be as old as 4,000 years. What is more, the tree remains productive to this very day.
There are also several great waterparks in Crete, including Acqua Plus (the biggest and most popular). These parks are generally focused on the surrounds of Heraklion, which makes the day trip more encouraging.
