Overview
Stylish luxury interiors plus a stunning, quiet location equals one knock-out four-bedroom retreat. Villa Myrtle is near the charming city of Rethymno on Crete’s glittering north coast. Not only is there a fully-equipped gym, serene spa-like Jacuzzi and private outdoor infinity pool, but the villa boasts breath-taking sea views from the floor-to-ceiling windows, bedroom balconies and outdoor terrace.
The main entrance of this modern two-storey villa leads to a bright open-plan living, kitchen and dining area, where you can relax with comfortably cushioned sofas, a fireplace and all the modern conveniences such as a television and internet. The décor is minimalist in style with whitewashed walls and natural-coloured furnishings giving an extra feeling of light and space. From the living room, there’s direct access to the main veranda, parking space, pool and garden.
With several sun loungers lining the swimming pool and a shaded kiosk, there are plenty of places for you to put your feet up. Perfect for a family-friendly stay, there’s also a separate shallower pool for children to splash about it, grassy spots for playing and a dedicated playroom indoors with a pool table, wall-mounted television and other games. The villa also provides a barbeque station where you can prepare an alfresco meal using fresh Cretan herbs from the garden.
The bedrooms are all equally sophisticated and inviting with windows showcasing the magnificent countryside vistas. Mattresses are made from comfortable organic fabric, and you can choose your pillow from the menu for a perfect night’s sleep. The master bedroom and the bedroom on the ground floor are privileged with an en-suite bathroom, while the other two share one bathroom. Oh, and not forgetting there’s also hydro-massage showers, a Jacuzzi and a fully-equipped gym.
Sitting pretty in the hillside in peaceful Kastellakia on the outskirts of Rethymno, Villa Myrtle is the ideal place to escape the stresses of everyday life. With the city centre and the beach only a three-minute drive away too, you can easily explore more of this beautiful part of Crete.
What you should know…
- One of the bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor has wheelchair access – perfect for older family members or those who have restricted movement
- The villa is on a hilltop overlooking the coastline. It’s therefore easier getting down to the beach, shops and restaurants than it is getting back. For this reason a car is recommended

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa MyrtleVilla Myrtle is in a quiet and peaceful spot in rural Kastellakia on the outskirts of Rethymno, between Chania and Heraklion on Crete’s north coast. This idyllic part of the Greek island doesn’t just serve up plenty of golden sandy beaches, there’s also a well-preserved Venetian old town, top-notch waterfront restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. A short three-minute drive – or 2.6km walk – will take you into the historic and commercial centre of the town with plenty of amenities.
Thanks to the Ottomans and Venetians, Rethymno’s old town is an eclectic mix of mosques and Renaissance buildings, and there’s an impressive fortress, too. Seafood tavernas and lively bars line the boat-dotted harbour. Spend the afternoons browsing the boutique shops and markets or wander through the narrow streets and alleyways to find arched doorways and stone staircases. Stop off for an iced coffee at one of the cafés by the pretty Rimondi Fountain. You can also visit the hilltop Fortezza – a star-shaped, 16th-century citadel and another stunning example of ancient architecture. There are also magical waterfalls and the cave church of Saint Anthony Gorge.
For afternoons spend at the beach, you’ll be pleased to know you don’t have to walk far – there’s one in the middle of the town. It’s a 12km-long stretch of golden sand and has calm waters for swimming and snorkelling. It’s also just across the road from shops, cafés and restaurants so you can enjoy a Cretan meze, like fresh feta drizzled with olive oil, when you get peckish. There are also plenty of opportunities to take part in water sports like sea kayaking, parasailing and scuba diving.
For fun day trip, about a thirty-minute drive (18km southeast of Rethymno) will take you to the Sacred Monastery of Arkadi – golden stone buildings and flower-filled courtyards. From there you can walk through fields and meadows to the village of Pikris for lunch at a traditional taverna.

Region
On the northern coast of Crete, Rethymno is a beautifully preserved medieval town in Greece with such a rich heritage and exquisite Venetian mansions.
The old town is simply enchanting. Fall in love as you wander along flower-filled lanes with architecture from the Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman Empire eras. Shop to your heart’s delight admiring local crafts, jewellery, clothes and souvenirs, then cool off with a drink in a café on a pretty square lined with olive trees.
Take time to explore the Venetian fortress overlooking the old town, admire the 17th century Rimondi fountain with its flowing water, walk up to the 19th century lighthouse, then stroll along the Venetian harbourfront where seafood specialities and other Cretan dishes are served in such a picturesque setting.
The 12km long blue-flagged city beach is a hive of activity in the summer months with watersports, sun beds, parasols, beachside bars and restaurants. Discover more remote shores a short drive from Rethymno such as Petres and Kamari Beach, both much-loved by keen snorkellers, or the iconic small bay at Spilies Beach with turquoise coloured sea.
Embrace the authenticity of Sfakaki, a charming seaside village only 10km from Rethymno with an idyllic beach that sometimes attracts loggerhead turtles in the summer. Pass eucalyptus trees, olive trees and wild herbs until you reach Monastery of Saint George (Arsaniou) for a peaceful experience overlooking the sea. Further south, the Arkadi Gorge is in an incredible area for hiking, ending at the stunning Monastery of Arkadi.
Meanwhile, appreciate more wild landscapes a short distance from Rethymno as well as ancient Cretan villages. Climb the pathways of the incredible Melidoni Cave, especially welcome in the heat of the summer, or venture to Mili Gorge with its ancient mills, little waterfalls and rare flora. The old village of Margarites is famed for its Byzantine churches, Venetian houses and, since the Ottoman empire, pottery production – it makes a lovely day out only half an hour from town life in Rethymno.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesWith a dedicated playroom, separate shallower pool for kids and plenty of grassy spots to play, Villa Myrtle is an ideal choice for families for children. The villa is also only a three-minute drive from the centre of Rethymno with a sandy swimming beach, amenities and exciting historical sites.
Rethymno is known for its old city that’s littered with archaeological gems. Pull on your most comfortable pair of shoes and take your family around the beautiful streets filled with enticing smells and vivid colours. Travel back in time and visit the fortress which protected the city from pirates and other invaders or the well-maintained and UNESCO-protected Arkadi Monastery.
There are plenty of family-friendly swimming beaches including one in the centre of the town. Teenagers can take part in water sports like snorkelling, scuba diving and sea kayaking, while younger ones can enjoy splashing about in the water of making castles in the soft sand.
