Staying at the magical Villa Barozzi gives you the chance to stay in a property classified as a historical monument by the Greek Archaeological authorities. This fascinating building dates back to 1426 and is brimming with ancient charm. It has been brilliantly restored to offer luxurious accommodation for up to eleven guests in five bedrooms. It comes with wonderful living spaces, a furnished roof terrace with a sea view, a dreamy courtyard with a pool and plenty of little snug corners where you can settle down with your holiday books.

Villa Barozzi is located in the charming, pretty village of Maroulas, just 8km from the beautiful Rethymno and just minutes from the lively village of Platanias whose gorgeous sandy beach is only 3km from the villa. The tranquil Venetian village of Maroulas sits above Rethymno surrounded by lush greenery. It enjoys a few friendly tavernas and cafes. In 1980 Maroulas was listed for its historical monuments and Villa Barozzi was included in this. When strolling through the village, you will discover two fabulous Venetian towers, a Byzantine church and a small chapel in the the charming village square. In the past, the houses of Maroulas were used as second homes by the nobility of Rethymno. Rethymno is roughly fifteen minutes away with its sandy beaches, Venetian and Ottoman architecture, Byzantine churches, picturesque port, charming narrow cobbled streets lined with unique boutiques and shops and its wonderful dining scene. As well as Platanias Beach, guests staying at Villa Barozzi enjoy the beautiful beach resorts of Bali, Agia Galini and Plakias.

Villa Barozzi offers wonderful nods to its glorious past. The restoration has been completed sympathetically and brilliantly so that guests also enjoy luxurious modern comforts and striking contemporary flair such as the gorgeous black edged doors and windows. The villa is perfect for large groups of family or friends. It comes with an atmospheric wine cellar, old traditional wooden doors to the inner courtyard and high walls that enclose the grounds so that guests enjoy total privacy. There are plenty of vintage furnishings to complement the historical charm of the building together with top notch technology including a projector and screen and Wi-Fi throughout. The attention to detail is incredible with so many little touches that will bring a smile to your faces.

When arriving at Barozzi you will enjoy the warm welcome of the mellow stone and enter through the old traditional doors to the inner courtyard. Access to the ground floor is through the conservatory where you will discover a fabulous open plan living space surrounded by arches. The main living area enjoys an impressive 3.6 metre high ceiling and a gorgeous marble floor. Cheery rattan sofas and chairs with plush cream cushions sit beside an open fire which is fabulous in cooler months. The adjacent characterful vaulted ceiling space is home to a television room and a hi-tech office. An overhead projector and giant screen are provided so that you can watch your favourite movies. For younger guests, there is a children’s play area, well stocked with games, books and activities. The dining area is beautiful, surrounded by these charming snug areas and with a gorgeous view out to the terrace and courtyard. The black framed windows and doors look totally amazing against the mellow stone and natural walls. The kitchen is charming in pale yellow. It offers all the appliances you need for your self catering break including the obligatory Nespresso coffee machine. It is very sociable with stools lined up at a small breakfast bar.

Two of the villa’s bedrooms are on the ground floor. The first enjoys a comfy double bed and direct access to the courtyard garden. There is a shower room just along the corridor. The second room has its own separate entrance. It boasts a beautifully dressed double bed, an ensuite bathroom and step access to the pool courtyard. The remaining three bedrooms are upstairs. The master boasts a comfy double bed, an original fireplace, an ensuite bathroom with a bath and gorgeous sea views from its many windows. Another of the bedrooms enjoys twin beds which are ideal for children and a double bed and the last offers a small double bed. These two bedrooms share a family bathroom.

Villa Barozzi enjoys wonderful outdoor spaces. The swimming pool is in the main courtyard surrounded by climbers, colourful plants and flowers in pots as well as cushioned wooden sun loungers and shady parasols. Numerous intimate bistro tables and chairs and iron benches are scattered around, perfect for your morning cups of coffee or perhaps a glass or two of chilled wine. Just outside the interior dining area is a wonderful alfresco dining space with plenty of space to prepare a meal. There is also another smaller courtyard where you can disappear with your holiday book, enjoying the tranquility and beauty of this special spot. The piece de resistance is the villa’s roof terrace which is furnished with alfresco lounge furniture, wooden sun loungers and another table and chairs. It is a dreamy place to sip cocktails at sunset while mesmerised by the views or dine alfresco under the stars.

Villa Barozzi is located in the quiet, pretty Venetian village of Maroulas. It sits on the hillside above Rethymno surrounded by lush greenery and numerous attractive valleys. It boasts narrow lanes lined with beautiful buildings and a central square. Visitors enjoy strolling through its warren of alleys and eating in the village’s friendly tavernas.

The lively village of Platanias is close by with its stunning sandy Blue Flag beach, cafes, bars and tavernas. The beach is well organised. Close to Platanias is Sfakaki, a lovely resort which is very friendly and enjoys some good shops, a bakery, tavernas, cafes, bars and restaurants. The beach is wonderful with a long sweep of sand and lots of sun loungers and parasols. The beach is home to Caretta Caretta sea turtles that you might see if you are lucky. If you stick around for sunset you will be rewarded with brilliant sunsets that cast a dazzling red and orange glow across the sea.

These villages are surrounded by countryside and narrow roads leading up to Maroulas. Ancient villages perch along the winding rural roads wrapped in vines and colourful flowers and Mount Ida stands majestically on the horizon. Charmed by the fragrant combination of wild herbs, oregano, oleanders, hollies and eucalyptus trees, you can visit the amazing Monastery Arsaniou. You can also visit the Monastery of Preveli or the 16th century Arkadi Monastery which stands alone on a plateau showcasing Baroque, Renaissance and Roman themes. The monastery is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour and the Saints Constantine and Helen. The Ideon Cave, on the east side of Mount Ida, is also fascinating as according to mythology it is where Zeus grew up.

Rethymno is a wonderful city with beautiful architecture, much charm, a lively port and plenty of tourist amenities. You will pass by a fabulous helping of interesting shops and delicious restaurants to reach the Old Town that is crammed with ancient buildings. Whilst offering much to tourists, Rethymno has maintained its authentic Greek feel. You can head for the Venetian Fortezza to admire this amazing sand coloured citadel perched high above the shoreline and stroll among the fragrant pine trees that lead you past ornate chapels and churches. The architecture throughout Rethymno is very elegant and the port is bustling, lined with restaurants and bars. There are many boat trips that you can take.

Plakias is another wonderfully popular resort. You can pass through the breathtaking Kourtaliotiko Gorge arriving at the idyllic stunning bay of Plakias with its brilliant blue sea. Plakias is a former fishing village and now offers some wonderful tavernas, restaurants and bars.

The Palace of Knossos is where according to legend, the foundations of the Bronze Age city were filled with an inescapable labyrinth that was guarded by a vicious minotaur. The master craftsman Daedalus built the labyrinth for the mythical King Minos. His son, Theseus, slew the minotaur and found his way out of the labyrinth with the help of Minos’ daughter, Ariadne, according to legend. The palace flourished during the Minoan period as the religious centre of Crete. Thanks to the archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans’ excavation and careful restoration, the Palace of Knossos is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Greece.

Region

On the northern coast of Crete, Rethymno is a beautifully preserved medieval town in Greece with such a rich heritage and exquisite Venetian mansions.

The old town is simply enchanting. Fall in love as you wander along flower-filled lanes with architecture from the Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman Empire eras. Shop to your heart’s delight admiring local crafts, jewellery, clothes and souvenirs, then cool off with a drink in a café on a pretty square lined with olive trees.

Take time to explore the Venetian fortress overlooking the old town, admire the 17th century Rimondi fountain with its flowing water, walk up to the 19th century lighthouse, then stroll along the Venetian harbourfront where seafood specialities and other Cretan dishes are served in such a picturesque setting.

The 12km long blue-flagged city beach is a hive of activity in the summer months with watersports, sun beds, parasols, beachside bars and restaurants. Discover more remote shores a short drive from Rethymno such as Petres and Kamari Beach, both much-loved by keen snorkellers, or the iconic small bay at Spilies Beach with turquoise coloured sea.

Embrace the authenticity of Sfakaki, a charming seaside village only 10km from Rethymno with an idyllic beach that sometimes attracts loggerhead turtles in the summer. Pass eucalyptus trees, olive trees and wild herbs until you reach Monastery of Saint George (Arsaniou) for a peaceful experience overlooking the sea. Further south, the Arkadi Gorge is in an incredible area for hiking, ending at the stunning Monastery of Arkadi.

Meanwhile, appreciate more wild landscapes a short distance from Rethymno as well as ancient Cretan villages. Climb the pathways of the incredible Melidoni Cave, especially welcome in the heat of the summer, or venture to Mili Gorge with its ancient mills, little waterfalls and rare flora. The old village of Margarites is famed for its Byzantine churches, Venetian houses and, since the Ottoman empire, pottery production – it makes a lovely day out only half an hour from town life in Rethymno.

Villa Barozzi is perfect for large groups of family. It can sleep eleven or even twelve guests in total and the owners have provided lots of toys and games for young children. One of the bedrooms enjoys a double bed and two singles. It makes a great family room. Children love the pool in the main courtyard and the large screen and projector when they want to watch a movie after a busy day on the beach.

The villa is only minutes away from gorgeous sandy beaches where you will find sun loungers, parasols, tavernas and some watersports. Children love their days on the beach and you can easily visit Platanias Beach, Sfakaki Beach, the Rethymno beaches, Preveli, Damnoni, Plakias, Rodakino and Triopetra. You will be mesmerised by their natural beauty and crystal clear water. Preveli Beach is 40km south of Rethymno and is one of the most idyllic beaches within easy reach. It feels like an exotic lagoon with its oasis of palm trees and greenish waters. The Kourtaliotis River ends at this breathtaking beach that is surrounded by lush greenery. The beach can get crowded in high season so you could combine your trip with a visit to the Preveli Monastery and walk from there or visit via a fishing boat from Plakias or Agia Galini. Bali is another Cretan wonder, a stunning beach to the east of the villa. It is just fabulous and there is a dive school, the Hippocampos Dive Centre that will take you on introductory dives as well as scuba courses. You will see colourful underwater sealife including beautiful seahorses.

Rethymno is a city rich in history and entertainment. There are so many monuments for children to spot from the Renaissance and Venetian times. With spectacular views of the city and the sea, the Fortezza is a great place for kids. They love wandering around and travelling back in time to the era when this fortress protected the city from pirates and other invaders. The Old Town has a 4km long boulevard perfect for cycling. You can hire bikes and cycle along. The beaches of Rethymno are fabulous so you can stop there or at one of the beach bars for refreshments.

Crete is famous for its olive oil and you can visit the Paraschakis Olive Oil Factory to learn about its three generations of production. The old mill was run with a donkey. Visitors can taste and buy the oil, enjoy a guided tour and even taste some raki. There are also some wonderful wineries to visit where you can explore the vineyards, learn about the production and taste some of the delicious wines.

  • A Special Spot

    on 08/09/2017

This is an excellent house and the owner is incredibly accommodating.

  • Great Oasis in Maroulas

    on 27/09/2016

The first thing you notice when entering the villa courtyard is the pool surrounded by lovely Venetian walls, this is a fantastic area of tranquillity and becomes the centre stage of your stay. You then move into the outside kitchen area before moving into the villa itself, this outside area next to the pool always ended up being the meeting, eating, late night drinking entertainment area.

Maroulas is a lovely and quiet village with three places to eat/drink plus only 10 minutes by car from the busy nearby town and beach. If you want somewhere with character and quality it's to be recommended. Also the daily cleaning service and attention of the owner make it really easy to stay in.

The positives are the character, having plenty of space, the distances between rooms (we had three couples who all effectively had their own areas to be in), the courtyard with and outside kitchen and the roof terrace.

If I could have made better I would have added a view from the pool (roof terrace good view but not a great place to be all day if very hot) and some of the fixtures getting a little tired but this is a small point.

Highly recommend the owners chef who came in and made a superb meal for us - make sure you starve yourself the day you do this!

Overall a great place and if you like something different rather than a standard white block villa next door to a load of other similar places then this could be the place for you.

  • I expect that you will find no greater place in Crete

    on 25/08/2016

"Do not rent this place if you're an exhausted corporate drone with no romantic imagination or interest in Cretan history, seeking a generic faux "luxury" seaside experience with fellow dullards in Greece. If, however, you'd enjoy waking up as a character in a surreal romantic novel, in an actual 15th century Venetian castle, in a town inflected by millennia of Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian influences, I expect you will find no better place in Crete. Unlike most restored castles, which are dark and boring inside, this one is well-designed, imaginative and full of light, which, as you might imagine, is incredible on Crete. Much of the surrounding structure was left original, and, as you can see here, is as dramatic as the villa itself. Your first day he draws you a map for an itinerary of the most interesting towns, vistas and relatively unknown beaches accessible in day trips from the villa, which is to say, everywhere on the island. You tell him what drew you to Crete, and he unobtrusively guides you to the best experience of whatever that is -- even when that includes the best restaurants and music venues off the beaten path. This is a typical day out with Yourghy (who gets extra points for using a Belgian mid-life crisis to move to Crete and restore a castle): He guides you through winding Maroulas walkways that look private to protect from Turks and tourists the town's ancient church, which is built into a cave. He unlocks it, shows you inside and then points out the 12th century BC burial chamber recently discovered on site, explaining that archaeologists now think a settlement here may date back 9,000 years. On another evening, he takes you down into Rethymno to the club and music venue just opened by a leading local underworld figure, to whom he introduces you, because Yourghy knows just about everyone who matters in Rhythmno prefecture. Between the spread he prepares for you upon arrival and your emotional farewell over too much Raki lay weeks of pleasure, inspiration and serotonin-rebalancing Cretan light in an astonishing environment. You should stay here"

  • The photos do not do this place justice

    on 22/06/2016

"We stayed with 9 adults and 4 children (under 5 years old). We could not have been happier or more impressed. Yorghy went over and above for us by pointing out local attractions, actually taking us on a brief tour of the best local places to eat and hangout and offering his assistance at a phone call. The photos do not do this place justice. It is set close to shops and the beach and there is a lot of history within walking distance. Parking is available directly in front of the villa. We had 3 cars and no problems. The cleaner is fantastic and the wine cellar provides a welcome change from the local wines! We were a group ranging from 6 months old to 60 years old and everyone was super happy. I hope many more people get to stay here and enjoy Crete. I cannot say enough in favour of this villa and Yorghy. Cheers, Robin, Vonnie, Mike, Britta, Olive, Julie, Leighton, Shelley, Wanda, Jim, Zaya, Lilly & Nina"

  • The villa is amazing

    on 28/04/2016

"If all holiday experiences were like the one that Yorghy created the world would indeed be a fantastic place. The villa is amazing, it was like we were living in a dreamland for a week. The beautiful historic Venetian building mixed with contemporary touches was spot on. The town of Maroulas is fascinating and it feels a world away from the tourist towns on the coast. The cheesemaker down the road was an exciting and delicious bonus. Taverna Katerina was hilarious. Yorghy took time to show us around and his recommendations were spot on. The drive to the South Coast was excellent. We loved Taverna Fantastiko. And knowing where to shop for what makes the holiday so much easier. There is a lot to see and do in the world but Crete and in particular Villa Maroulas definitely is calling my family back. An authentic holiday experience is a very rare thing and Villa Maroulas really stands out from the crowd" Michael B

  • An ideal place for a family get together

    on 24/09/2015

"The villa is very beautiful and is ideal place for a large family get together. The descriptions provided were very accurate and the villa fully met our expectations. From the moment I first contacted Yorghy about the availability of the villa to our departure, Yorghy was very responsive, always did what he said he was going to do and was generally a great person to deal with"
