Location
About the surrounding area of Villa DorisVilla Doris is situated in a quiet location in the village of Troianata, a lesser-known area of Greece that offers a combination of natural scenery, local traditions, and a calm atmosphere. The village features whitewashed houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and bougainvillaea-covered walls. Small tavernas serve traditional Greek dishes such as moussaka and souvlaki, providing an opportunity to experience local cuisine. The surrounding landscape consists of olive groves and vineyards, as Kefalonia is known for its olive oil and wine production. Visitors can explore olive presses and vineyards to learn more about the process.
Centrally located on the island, Troianata provides easy access to several beaches on Kefalonia’s western and southern coasts, as well as the capital, Argostoli, which is a short drive away. Argostoli is situated at the end of a bay, surrounded by mountains and forests. The town was rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1953 and now features a coastal promenade lined with palm trees, various restaurants, cafes, and shops, and a small ferry quay with boats travelling to Lixouri. Points of interest include the Church of Saint Spyridon, the clock tower of Campana Square, and the Archaeological Museum of Kefalonia, which houses artefacts from the Mycenaean, Hellenistic, and Roman periods.
Lixouri, the second-largest town on the island, is located on the site of the ancient city of Pali. The town has a variety of restaurants and bars along the waterfront and main square, Plateia Petritsi. Known for its cultural heritage, Lixouri hosts festivals throughout the year and is home to one of Greece’s oldest philharmonic schools. Visitors can explore historic churches with frescoes, an archaeological museum, neoclassical buildings, and the Monastery of Kipoureon.
Nearby, the seaside village of Pessada offers views of Zante and has several small beaches with clear water. Other beaches in the area include Trapezaki Beach, Avithos Beach, Ammes Beach, Minies Beach, Makris Gialos Beach, Xi Beach, Poros Beach, and Skala Beach. Xi Beach, notable for its red sand, offers activities such as beach volleyball and paddleboarding. Myrtos Beach located a short drive from Troianata, is often regarded as one of the most scenic beaches in the Mediterranean, with white pebbles, clear waters, and dramatic cliffs.
Assos and Fiskardo are two additional destinations on the island. Assos is a quiet village with restaurants and cafes, set against green hills and forests. The village has pastel-coloured houses and a historic castle. Fiskardo, on the northern tip of the island, is known for its waterfront dining, boutique shops, and a harbour that accommodates both fishing boats and luxury yachts.
The Robola Winery, located nearby, offers wine tastings and vineyard tours, providing insights into Kefalonia’s wine production. For additional sightseeing, Melissani Cave features a subterranean lake with bright turquoise water, Mount Ainos offers hiking trails with panoramic views, and Drogarati Cave contains striking stalactites and stalagmites.
Troianata provides an opportunity to experience Kefalonia’s landscapes, beaches, and cultural heritage. It is a suitable destination for those looking for a quiet environment with access to both natural and historical sites.

The thirty-nine beaches of Kefalonia are fabulous. The astounding Myrtos Beach is one of the most famous and it is a true wonder, featured on many postcards and posters. You can hire boats to discover the coastline and there are watersports available at some beaches. Children always love boat trips. You can visit secluded coves and bays, swimming and snorkelling along the way. It is lovely to head out from one of the harbours at sunset and watch the sun go down. The boat trip over from Argostali to Lixouri is a great trip. You can also hire kayaks to discover the wonderful coastline and caves. Argostoli's harbour is a great place for kids to spot loggerhead sea turtles. These gentle creatures are often seen swimming near the waterfront, and many tour operators offer boat trips where you can observe them up close.
Children love visiting the caves of Melissani Lake where a hole in the cave’s roof lets in the sun. It is very mystical and like venturing into another world. The boat trip across the crystal clear lake is such a memorable excursion. The Drogarati Caves are a miracle of nature with orange and yellow stalactites hanging from the roof like curtains. It is an astonishing marvel, more than 150 million years old. It is like stepping into a different world. The acoustics in the cave are so impressive that it's often used as a concert venue, making it even more intriguing.
Koutavos Lagoon in Argostoli is a serene natural habitat with wooden walkways that allow kids to spot various bird species and fish. It is an excellent opportunity for young nature enthusiasts to connect with the island's wildlife.
The Fanari Lighthouse, located on the Lixouri Peninsula, provides a fantastic opportunity to engage kids in a mini-adventure. The scenic drive to the lighthouse is an adventure in itself, and once there, you can enjoy the panoramic views of the sea and surrounding landscapes.
Cycling is popular in Kefalonia. Some of the coastal paths might be a little difficult for young children but there are some magnificent panoramic views and charming villages to stop at. Skala to Mount Aenos is a fabulous ride with generally great conditions. Craggy cliffs, verdant forests and turquoise waters make for an incredible vistas. Mount Aenos is the highest point on the island at 5000 ft. It is also a great place for a hike.
Kefalonia, with its diverse range of activities and attractions, provides an unforgettable family holiday. Whether your children are drawn to the sea, caves, history or nature, there is something for every young adventurer to discover on this Greek gem of an island.
