Location
About the surrounding area of Villa KothreasKefalonia is an island boasting breathtaking natural scenery, brimming with lush green forests and turquoise waters. The hilly forests guard the island’s sprawling vineyards and ancient villages. Honey-hued sands surround the island and are kissed by shimmering, calm waters and pretty towns which come alive for tourists in the evenings. The northern part of Kefalonia was the only place that survived from the strong earthquakes of the past and offer the authentic old Kefalonia. The island offers a fantastic variety of places to visit and an
outstanding dining scene. Kefalonia shot to fame with the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and it is easy to see why it is so popular.
Assos and Fiskardo are both wonderful day or evening excursions from the villa. Assos is peaceful, charming and picturesque with some excellent restaurants and cafes. It is surrounded by luscious green scenery and verdant forests. Assos offers a mystical atmosphere, almost as though the village is lost in time. Pretty pastel-coloured houses are nestled into the steep hillsides and visitors can take a pretty stroll to the castle. On the northern tip of the island, Fiskardo is trendy and chic with stunning waterside dining, excellent shopping with a wonderful selection of unique boutiques and a very good range of boat trips. You will enjoy seeing colourful fishing boats in the harbour, luxury yachts and self-charter boats. Fiskardo is the place to see and be seen!
Villa Kothreas is close to many wonderful beaches. Emplisi and Foki are two quiet pebbly beaches with shallow crystal clear water. The most famous of the northern beaches is Myrtos Beach, the picture postcard beach that is constantly photographed from the winding roads above. The beach is accessed from a steep, winding road with a small car park at the bottom. It is made up of white pebbles and stunning turquoise water. At the southern end of the beach there is a large cave. Agia Kiriaki Beach is near the village of Zola, another idyllic beach. Close to Sami is Antisamos Beach which enjoys a Blue Flag award. It became famous when Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was filmed there. In the south, Makris and Platis Gialos are located near Argostoli, the island’s capital. They are very popular and highly organised with watersports and loungers.
Lixouri is the second largest town in Kefalonia, 35 km west of Argostoli. This beautiful town was built on the site of the ancient city of Pali, before the major earthquake of 1953. Plenty of delightful restaurants and bars line the busy waterfront of Lixouri and the main square, Plateia Petritsi. Lixouri holds many festivals throughout the year and is known for its rich cultural traditions. It boasts one of the oldest philharmonic schools in Greece. You can visit some atmospheric churches with wonderful frescoes, the archeological museum, neoclassical buildings and the famous Monastery of Kipoureon.
