Double French doors open out onto a stunning sea view balcony, which is furnished with an elegant six-seater dining set, a shady parasol, and a padded seating spot with spectacular vistas. Go down the stone steps to the paved terrace, where there is an impressive fifteen-metre-long infinity swimming pool, perfect for a few lengths before breakfast, or a cooling afternoon dip. The pool is surrounded by bamboo-style sun loungers, lie back, and relax, whilst you catch up with this season’s best seller. Soft seating and coffee tables are perfectly positioned under old olive trees, just right for a morning coffee catch-up, or cocktails at sunset. As dusk falls, feast alfresco at the outdoor dining set, with local delicacies freshly cooked on the barbeque, and raise a toast to the most memorable holiday.

Villa Fira can be found perched on the mountainside overlooking the fishing village of Agios Nikitas, on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Lefkada, in the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. The villa is a scenic forty-five-minute drive from the nearest international airport of Aktion, or island hop and take a ferry from Athens. It’s a short fifteen-minute walk to the picturesque beach resort of Agios Nikitas, where you will be able to pick up provisions for your holiday, have a swim in the crystal clear waters, and sample the local fare in a family-run taverna.

Nearby is the beautiful Mylos beach, which you can get to by a taxi boat, and bathe in its turquoise sea. A ten-minute drive will take you to the organised beach of Kathisma, famous for its fun beach bars, and water sports, most notably paragliding. Twenty minutes away is the capital town of Lefkes, with its central square of Agios Spyridon, and many beautiful Greek Orthodox churches with original icons and works of the Ionian School of Painting. Walk down Mela Street, with its arcades of souvenir shops and traditional houses, before visiting the Archeological, Gramophone, and Folklore Museums. The pretty fishing village of Vassilki on the south coast is well known for its beautiful organised beaches, and excellent water sports, particularly windsurfing. From here you can take the ferry and island hop to the Ithika and Kefalonia.

The village of Poros has verdant slopes populated with traditional two-storey terracotta-roofed houses, winding alleyways, a fourth-century castle, and the Church of Analipsi with its icons and frescoes. See the yachts at Sivota, and watch the fishing boats unload their daily catch for the local restaurants. The village of Santa Maria is rich in the cultural history of the island, with a tiny church, a nineteenth-century castle, a fifteenth-century mosque, and a Venetian Christian temple, with a stone bell tower. There are the two sea lake lagoons of Lefkada, in the protected area of Divari and Ivaria, home to migratory sea birds, gulls, herons, swans, hares, foxes, and ferrets. Lefkada is also famous for its dense forests and mountains; walk, trek, hike, climb or cycle these inland regions, take guided tours on well-worn tracks, and see the island’s flora and fauna. Admire the views of Mount Elati, at one thousand one hundred and fifty metres above sea level, it is the highest peak on Lefkada. Get active with horse riding, scuba diving, fishing, and tennis, followed by an in-villa massage.

No visit to Lefkada is complete without a boat tour of the island, and even better let the concierge arrange your own private yacht charter with your own captain. Sail the Ionian Sea, swim, snorkel, and sunbathe, enjoy lunch aboard, and then embark as the sun begins to set. After all that activity, wind down with a visit to the local vineyards and sample the excellent wines the island has to offer.

There are lots for your kids to do and see when you stay at Villa Fira, on the west coast of Lefkada, in the Greek Ionian Sea. Starting with the villa and its private swimming pool, and as it's your own they can swim, play, and splash all day. There are at least twenty-two fabulous golden sand, easy entry, clear water, and family-friendly beaches around the Lefkada coastline, you will be spoilt for choice as to where to spend the day. The nearby resort village of Agios Nikitas is fabulously family-friendly, noted for its picturesque beauty, with a pristine beach set in an amphitheatre bay surrounded by olive groves.

The nearby Mylos beach, which can be accessed by boat or hiking, has a long sandy shore and turquoise waters, whilst Kathisma is famous for its fun beach bars, and water sports for your older children. The town of Lefkes is well worth a visit, where your children can learn some of the histories of the island at the Archeological Museum, the culture of the island at the Folklore Museum, have some fun at the Gramophone museum, then take them to a treat to a traditional Greek patisserie for a delicious dessert and ice cream. There are also lots of playgrounds dotted around town for the younger members of your family. Get them active with a walk along one of the many forest and mountain trails, a morning horseback riding, or a day out at the sea lakes to see the birds. Take a Jeep Safari around the island, and see the nearby inland mountain village of Karya, noted for its embroidery shops and handcrafted olive artefacts. Stop off at the monastery of Faneromeni, with its Byzantine icons, lush gardens, and a mini zoo.

Out of town, a family day to Nidri is a must, with its verdant natural bays, sandy beaches, fishing boats and caiques, ferry connections, and folklore museum. It is also home to the Nidri Waterfalls at the Dimossari Gorge, where water cascades into a natural lake surrounded by rock formations. Mili Beach is great for kitesurfing, swimming, and sunbathing. For your older children, on the south coast, the village of Vasiliki is noted for fun in the sun windsurfing. You can all learn the art of olive oil production at the Fabbrica Olive Museum, then get to taste it and take a bottle home with you. The Kerasia Waterfall is well worth a visit just for the views. No holiday to Lefkada is complete without a family day at sea, join a boat tour from the harbour, or let the concierge charter your own yacht, where you can swim, snorkel, and sunbathe all day.
