You’ll be seeing double when you vacation in one of the two Villa Mithimna, near the town of Molyvos, on the north coast of the Greek Cycladic island of Lesbos, a gem in the Aegean Sea. These two adjacent, detached villas are identical, set in their own local stone high walled grounds, with well-maintained gardens and lawns, and tall, mature trees for privacy, shade, and seclusion. Each villa has its own private swimming pool and sweeping sea and town views. The backdrop to both is the lavender-hued Lepetymno mountain range, and a vista as far as the islet of Lazaretto, with its mesmerising sunsets, whilst the nearest beach is a short walk away.

The two storeys, stone-built villas, each have two spacious double bedrooms, and can comfortably accommodate up to six guests, ideal for a small family, or friends sharing. The villas come with private parking, complimentary air conditioning and Wi-Fi throughout, and satellite receiver TVs. The interiors are dressed in a traditional style, a comfy holiday beach home in the countryside vibe, and decorated in a colour palette of classic white with soft shades of pale greys and cool blues.

Access your villa by the external staircase, which will take you to the first floor, where you will find a light and airy living space. The seating area has two pale blue sofas, which can be converted into a bed, wooden coffee and side tables, a satellite television that takes cards so that you can watch your favourite channels, a DVD and CD player, and a wood burning fireplace for the cooler months and evenings. The pretty kitchen is fully equipped with all the modern appliances you will need to cater for your holiday, including an oven and hob, microwave and dishwasher, and that must-have espresso coffee maker. There is an indoor dining set in the kitchen, and an alfresco one on the sea-view balcony, where you can feast on local delicacies under a twinkling sky. The ground floor is home to two beautifully appointed double bedrooms. The master bedroom has a large double bed, bedside and dressing tables, whilst the second bedroom has two wrought iron single beds. Each bathroom has a Jacuzzi bath, double hand basins, WC, a hairdryer, and a washing machine.

The grounds and gardens are a delight, with a centrepiece, fenced-in, ladder-entry swimming pool, and a separate shallow children’s pool. Wooden sun loungers with deep pale grey cushions surround each pool, and contrasting parasols provide shade. Manicured green grass lawns are perfect to play on, or laze in the sunshine catching up with this year’s bestseller, A picnic-style wooden bench is a lovely spot for snacking alfresco, and meeting for cocktails as the sun sets over the azure Aegean Sea and the medieval Molyvos castles.

Villas Mithimna can found be overlooking the historic town of Molyvos, also known as Mithymna, on the north coast of the Greek island of Lesbos, in the heart of the azure Aegean Sea. The nearest international airport is Mytilini Odysseas Elytis, sixty-five kilometres south of the villa, an hour and a quarter’s drive through the Greek countryside. If you are island hopping arrive at the port of Mytilini, which is sixty-two kilometres away. The villa is within walking distance of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Molyvos, where you will find a medieval castle, Orthodox churches, cobbled streets, traditional tavernas, and a fabulous organised beach.

The nearest beach is just five hundred metres away, a short stroll through the dunes and you are there. The beautiful beach of Efthalou is a few kilometres north of the villa, famous for its stunning sunsets, whilst picturesque Petra Bay, is a short drive south. The capital town of Mytilini is an hour’s drive away, where you can wander around the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Folk Art Museum, the Museum of Costume and Embroidery, and the Theophilus Art Museum. Climb the famous castle fortifications for some stunning sea views, then walk the Roman aqueduct and admire their technical skills. Mytilini reflects its history in the number of Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, its many Byzantine monasteries, and mosques still there from the time of Ottoman rule. Make sure you don’t miss the local markets, selling hand-pressed olive oil, hive honey, carved woodwork, and homemade cheeses. After all that you’ve earned yourself a glass of ouzo and a plate of Greek mezes in a street side café, or treat yourself to some freshly caught fish, most notably the local sardines, in a seafront restaurant.

If you are feeling active there are lots of hiking trails, where you can discover the local flora and fauna. Take a tour of over two hundred caves scattered across the island, believed to be originally neolithic places of worship. Marvel at the natural hot springs of Efthalia, Thermes, and Gera. Discover an underwater marine world snorkelling and scuba diving. Sunbathe on one of the many varied beaches that populate the coastline, and partake in water sports, most especially windsurfing. Visit villages as old as time, especially Lafiona, Agiassos, Plomari and Skala Sikimias, and see how the islanders really live. Lose yourself in the unique and natural phenomenon that is the Petrified Forest, created from intense volcanic activity. Then visit the neighbouring museum at Sigri, which is dedicated to researching, promoting, displaying, and preserving it. Go on a wine tour and sample the fruits of the harvest, and most of all make sure you don’t miss the World of Ouzo Museum at Isodoros Avvanitis.

At the end of a busy day sightseeing, sit back and watch the stars appear on the big screen as the stars come out to shine at the open-air cinema specially constructed for the summer. Venture further afield, from the port at Mytilini boards a ferry to the neighbouring islands of Lindos, Samos, Chios, and beyond.

Discover Lesbos!

The volcanic island of Lesvos (often spelled as Lesbos) offers visitors pretty villages, impressive nature, fascinating geology and gorgeous beaches as well as a fascinating history and rich island culture.

Seasonally, international flights arrive at the island’s airport around 7km south of the island’s capital city, Mytilene, or sail to Lesvos from various Greek ports including Piraeus, Athens.

Fall in love with the island beaches from the long shores of Vatera Beach with watersports, sun loungers and umbrellas to more remote spots accessible only by boat. Keen snorkellers will love the clear waters of Tsonia Beach or you may prefer to sip cocktails overlooking Paralia Tarti’s crystal-clear sea. If you can find the time, soak up the summer ambience of the lively beach at Molyvos with idyllic sunsets over the Aegean.

The island’s nature is inspiring with ample bird-watching opportunities, especially around the salt pans of Kalloni where migratory birds stop en route from Africa to Europe. In the springtime, look out for rare sightings of birds and beautiful wild flowers as you follow a network of hiking trails across the mountains and wild forests. Cycling is another wonderful way to experience the natural beauty and authentic Greek charm of Lesvos.

With archaeological sites and historic castles, there are many sites where you can learn all about the island’s diverse and often turbulent history. Admire the Roman aqueduct in Moria, the Byzantine castle in Molyvos and the impressive fort in in Mytilene. Visitors will also appreciate the island’s hot springs and spas, many which have been used for centuries, and Lesvos’ rich heritage in olive oil and ouzo production – a visit to The World of Ouzo Museum and distillery is an interesting detour.

Another great highlight of the island is The Petrified Forest, dating back 20 million years -the fossilised tree stumps underwent the process of petrification during the active volcanic period. Learn more about this unique natural site, at the forest’s Natural History museum around 11km from the remote fishing harbour of Sigri.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Children can have so much fun when you stay on the island of Lesbos. The villas have their own private fenced-in swimming pools for your older kids, and a separate shallow children’s pool for your younger ones. Each villa has gorgeous green lawns to play on, surrounded by stone walls and tall trees for security, shade, and privacy. The nearest sandy beach with easy entry shallow waters is a short five hundred metre walk away, great for a family day out, yet near to home. You can walk to the historic town of Molyvos, then take a hike up to the castle, ride the village train, sunbathe on the beach, enjoy the selection of water sports, then wander its colourful cobbled streets and enjoy an authentic Greek dinner in a family-friendly restaurant.

The coastline is populated with family-friendly beaches, many with organised sun loungers, parasols, water sports, facilities, and restaurants and bars To the north of the villa is the beautiful beach of Efthalou, and to the south is the stunning Petra Bay. We especially recommend the beach of Gavanthas for its calm and quiet picturesque setting and the resort of Eressou with its dark volcanic sands. No trip to Lesbos is complete without a family day at sea, and there are lots of options. All aboard a glass-bottomed boat tour, where they can spot the local marine life through the glass. Go on a shared boat trip out to sea, and if you are lucky, they might get to see a dolphin or seal playing in the water. Push the boat out and charter your own yacht for a lazy day at sea, swimming and snorkelling, discovering hidden bays and secret coves, dine aboard, and then sail back to the harbour as the sun sets.

Your kids will love a visit to the UNESCO Geopark Petrified Forest and Museum at Sigri. This incredible lunar landscape of trees turned into stone by intense volcanic activity is fabulously fascinating. If you are on holiday in the month of June, there is the Lesbos Food Festival, which has special cookery lessons for kids, teaching them how to make traditional Greek dishes. They can learn the importance of bees and beekeeping at the Museum Honey Farm in Skalochori, and get to taste it too. The Olive Oil Museum at Plomari has an original press, and an exhibition of the history of olive oil production on the island, sample some and take a bottle home with you.

Enjoy a family day out in Mytlini, the capital of Lesbos, where children especially love visiting the ancient fortifications and medieval castles with magnificent views from the top. In Mytlini there are museums to spark their interest in history, beaches to build sand castles, parks and children’s playgrounds, the old port and a harbour to take boat trips from, as well as lots of family-run traditional tavernas. In the centre of the island, there is the Kelloni Nature Reserve, where they can spot up to two hundred and fifty species of birds, fabulous if you’ve got a twitcher in the family. A visit to local villages, through the natural flora and fauna of the Lesbos countryside, is a great way to learn about the culture of the country. End your day out in Molyvos town, where in the summer months, the open-air cinema show children’s film alfresco.
