Overview
Villa Sophia has a fabulous location in the peaceful village of Megalochori on a quiet, winding street, away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Fira. The villa is just a short stroll away from the picturesque central village square with its pretty churches and bell towers. A handy selection of amenities such as restaurants, shops and a great local market, where guests can stock up on snacks and wine, can all be found in Megalochori. A wider range of amenities and exciting nightlife can be found in Fira, which is just a 15-minute car journey away.
The villa can sleep up to four guests across two beautiful bedrooms. The accommodation is set out over one level; large wooden entrance gates conceal a private courtyard oasis which boasts a private swimming pool. Double doors lead from the courtyard into the living and dining room, the two double bedrooms lead off from either side of this room. The villa also boasts a fully equipped kitchen which comes complete with all necessary amenities as well as a family bathroom.
Outside, the courtyard is the perfect place to spend a lazy day relaxing by the pool with a good book. For those who enjoy al fresco dining, there are dining facilities and a handy barbecue, perfect for cooking up a storm with treats purchased at the local market!
What you should know…
- Megalochori has all the amenities you would need for a comfortable stay without the hustle & bustle of Fira or Oia, however, the village is not best known for its nightlife
- While the villa makes a fantastic base, we recommend making use of a hire car in order to fully explore the whole island

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa SophiaMegalochori is one of the most picturesque villages on the beautiful island of Santorini, thanks partly to how it has managed to maintain its traditional architecture. Opinions differ on the origin of the name - some say that it came from the agricultural fields that the villagers kept, and others argue that the name reflects the personality of the place. Even though most of the houses have been renovated, Megalochori has managed to retain many of its traditional values. Many picturesque local churches and many vineyards produce fine local wines. The nearby beaches are superb, and whatever you do, try some of the traditionally produced sun-dried tomatoes.
The surrounding area has an abundance of restaurants, tavernas, cafes, bakers, mini-markets, tourist shops and wineries - they are all easy to find, and you'll find the locals incredibly friendly and welcoming. Despite boasting all necessary amenities, Megalochori leaves visitors feeling like a million miles away from any hustle & bustle; however, the busy towns of Fira and Oia are still only a short car journey away!

Region
Considered to be one of the most beautiful villages on the island, Megalochori is a hidden gem with white-washed houses, blue-domed churches, bougainvillea-clad terraces and a fine reputation for its Vinsanto wine production which brought great prosperity to this part of Santorini.
On Santorini’s western coast and surrounded by vineyards, this traditional Cycladic village attracts day trippers keen to tour family-run wineries such as Gavalas and Boutari – the naturally sweet wine is made from grapes grown in volcanic soil left to dry naturally in the sun, then aged in oak barrels. You can also visit the village caves carved out from volcanic rock where wine and olive oil was once stored centuries ago.
Meanwhile, be enchanted as you wander around the warren of old lanes, admire the delightful belltower on the main square and stop off in an inviting taverna serving delicious local fare. Much of the 17th century village was damaged in an earthquake many years ago but it has been lovingly restored and still retains its historic charm.
For day trips away from the village, drive up to hilltop Pyrgos for yet more gorgeous architecture, castle ruins and stunning views of the island. Further north, Fira is of course the island’s popular capital, and captivating Oia is loved for its photogenic scenery and sunsets.
Alternatively, head south to the ancient site of Akrotiri and Santorini’s iconic red beach with red-hued pebbles and volcanic rocks – boat trips also allow you to admire this stunning spectacle from the sea, sometimes as part of an island volcano or sunset tour.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesIt's good to note that Santorini's isn't particularly suitable for kids. Most of the beautiful towns are stacked on hilltops, which means there are narrow pathways and steep steps everywhere you go, not great for pushchairs or prams.
Kids will enjoy exploring the two towns on the island; Pyrgos is built on a hill with an old castle on top and fantastic views. Emporio is flatter and smaller, but both offer plenty of opportunities to get happily lost. The cobbled streets of Oia and Fira may also be of interest. Ice cream, crepes, and a few stories about exploding volcanoes will add to the experience.
There a tomato museum, the Alrotiki Lighthouse, the prehistoric Akrotiri Town. and the Kamari open air cinema. The movies aren't always kid-friendly, so check the schedule in advance, but they're usually popular movies in English (with Greek subtitles).

Paradise
We loved staying in Villa Sofia. The courtyard and pool offered us our own private slice of paradise. The house has an authentic old-world charm. It was fully equipped with everything we needed. Takis made the whole booking process very easy and was responsive when we had questions.
Villa Sofia is a 2-minute walk from a variety of restaurants in the town square and a family-owned winery that is worth a visit. We enjoyed exploring the quiet, winding streets of Megalchori and preferred the atmosphere of a traditional village to the faster pace and hoards of tourists in Fira and Oia. -
Welcoming, friendly, accommodating
Takis was great to work with while planning our girls trip. Always quick to respond to my questions. Konstantinos was an excellent host - welcoming, friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable of the area, with wonderful suggestions. The Villa was beautiful, private and well-located with very comfortable beds. I highly recommend staying at this gem in Megalochori!

Wonderful villa
Wonderful pretty traditional village stay in beautiful Mansion Sophia ! Villa Sophia is in the heart of pretty village Megalochori ! 2 minutes walk from bars, restaurants and shops. It is a very quaint traditional villa with dark wood and traditional fittings! The bed was so comfortable and the pool was perfect to cool down in - it was very hot during our stay but inside the villa was cool and the bedroom had air con so comfortable temperature was maintained throughout! The car hire that came with the villa was very easy too ! We turned up at desk inside terminal, gave name and 10 mins later drove away in car ! Parking is in a car park roughly 4min walk from villa ! Everything you need is in the villa for a stay there! And both Takis and Konstantinos were only a call away should you require anything or any assistance! We loved our stay here and totally recommend a stay at this beautiful quaint villa set in a pretty traditional village. Everyone we met was so friendly and helpful. Thank you so much for making our stay so special and wonderful!

Amazing stay!
We loved our stay! The location was ideal! The Villa is located in a quiet and charming area that makes you feel like a local. Great restaurants and shopping right at your doorstep, while just a short drive to the bigger cities. The host was amazing and gave us great recommendations for activities as well as dining. He even arranged an additional rental car, made dinner reservations and helped schedule a late night taxi. The list goes on and on with this Villa. You won’t be disappointed and we would definitely book this place again.

Exceptional!
We had the absolute pleasure of staying at Villa Sophia. The villa and village of Megalochori is second only to the fantastic service provided by Takis and his team. The villa is beautiful and the small village of Megalochori in which is sits, outstanding. A quite tranquil reprieve from the noise of the over-touristed parts of Santorini. With an amazing winery, handful of exceptional restaurants, bars and cultural venues all less than 50 meters from the villa we ended up spending little time elsewhere. Takis is a brilliant host. Communication was excellent were his recommendations and connections for outings and activities. Whenever I return to Santorini, I will return also to Megalochori and Villa Sophia.

A must visit!
This place is a combination of luxury, serenity and beauty. The mansions are clearly built with love, in the -definetely- most beautiful village of this magical island. The ambience, the kindness of the personnel, the architecture, the lights, the shades, everything is meant to satisfy your senses and offer relaxation. Santorini during the summer is a really busy place as a worldwide destination, but staying here makes you feel comfortable and tranquil. A must visit!!

Heaven in Santorini!
If you are looking for Heaven in Santorini, Villa Sophia is truly an exceptional property, not to be missed. Located within walking distance of the old town square of Megalochori, this beautiful cave villa is like stepping back in time. Once you enter the private wooden gates, you are immediately met with a fabulous courtyard and your own sparkling infinity pool. The property is surrounded by mature olive trees and spectacular hanging vines. The house itself reminded us of elegant days in early Greece, but is modernized with air-conditioning, TV, internet and daily maid service. This property also includes a car and transfers, which makes getting around Santorini very easy. The ancient town of Megalochori is charming. In the center of the village, there are wonderful taverns, shops and shade trees. A focal point of the square is the church with its traditional blue dome and bells that ring every hour. Megalochori is a relaxing town and does not have the hustle and bustle of Fira or Oia (which are loaded with tourists and cruise ships). Once you are at the villa, all of your needs are taken care of by Takis Sotiropoulos, the General Manager of Santorini Heritage (and the concierge, Jackie). The Villa is so spectacular that Takis helped arranged for my husband and I to renew our wedding vows. We stayed at the villa for two amazing weeks and plan to return to Villa Sophia on one of next trips to Europe. A little know secret about Megalochori. Over the last year or so, the singing star Beyonce stayed in the village for rest and relaxation. That says it all!

Beautiful!
After spending two days in lovely but very busy Oia, this home was a beautiful change of pace. The pool and flower strewn patio were lovely and the village of Megalochori was charming and quiet. Jackie provided us with everything we needed and offered recommendations for activities to enjoy. The rental car allowed us to explore island highlights such as beaches (Red Beach) and Pyrgos (the view from Franco’s cafe after 6 pm is breathtaking and allows a bird’s eye view of the island). Our favorite restaurant of our stay on Santorini was Metaxi Mas—be sure to make a reservation and ask to be seated on the lower outdoor patio for a beautiful sunset view of the interior part of the the island that some may miss!
