Location
About the surrounding area of Kolympia EliaFrom a historic capital to a beach-laden coast, it’s all there to be discovered on the Greek island of Rhodes.
At the top of the island, the capital city is an impressive starting point – you’ll find the airport about 20 minutes’ drive to the west. The medieval Old Town in Rhodes city is one of the best-preserved of its kind in Europe, offering up all sorts of architectural treasures. You can take a look around part of the vast Palace of the Grand Masters, the main attraction of this UNESCO World Heritage site. This former citadel and fortress hosts various exhibitions and performances throughout the year. Also within the complex is Rhodes’ Archaeological Museum.
Just up the road, the Rhodes Aquarium occupies the island’s most northerly spot, and the popular Elli Beach hugs the curve of the coast. You should also make time for Mandraki Port and a walk along the city walls. Other notable attractions include the Museum of Modern Greek Art and the National Theatre.
Head for Orfanidou Street to check out the city’s biggest concentration of bars and clubs, try your luck at the casino or look into Rhodes’ dining scene. While you wouldn’t always strike gold, there are certainly great places among the tourist traps, some taking inspiration from other international cuisines.
About 25km from Rhodes city, the Valley of the Butterflies is one of the island’s best-loved attractions. Visit in summer for the best chance of seeing the creatures en masse, as they swarm into the valley. Near Kolympia, the Epta Piges (Seven Springs), showcases yet more of the natural beauty of Rhodes, with peaceful wooded areas and the spectacular waterfalls the park is named after.
All over the island, fascinating old buildings punctuate the landscape, with ruined castles, monasteries and fortresses waiting to be discovered. If you head down the western coast, the remains of Kritinia Castle occupy an impressive position, looking out into the mighty Aegean Sea. The Lindos Acropolis is another one not to miss – it’s a steep ascent to the clifftop site but you’ll be able to savour some stunning Mediterranean views.
Lindos also offers some lovely beaches, like St Paul’s Bay, and many recommended restaurants. The village is famed for its many rooftop terraces – you may be able to spot the one you want to dine on from the Acropolis.
Further south, make time for a visit to the wonderful Prasonisi Beach – a landmark lighthouse also sits right at the tip of the island. There are many more excellent beaches further north – Afantou, Archangelos and Agathi are among those on the eastern coast, while Kameiros and Soroni are on the western side. For a family day out, Faliraki is one of the best-equipped beaches on the island, with a lot of child-friendly attractions nearby.

The Island/Getting There
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.
Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.
The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.
The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.
Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:
- Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
- The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
- For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
- Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) – Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun. Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
- Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
- Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.
How to reach Rhodes island
There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.
By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.
By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesKolympia Elia provides a great family holiday in a location just minutes from the beach and local amenities. With its magnificent pool terrace, barbecue and lots of space for outdoor play, you can be sure they will be enjoying themselves, and the stylish house provides satellite TV and Wi-Fi for more entertainment.
About 30 minutes from Kolympia, the Valley of the Butterflies makes a great day out. This 600-acre nature reserve fills with butterflies in summer, and offers lots of beautiful forest to go walking in. There is also a restaurant on site for a well-deserved break.
A similar distance away, the Farma of Rhodes offers an interactive wildlife experience where kids can pet and feed the animals. There are ostriches, lemurs, raccoons, camels and all sorts. It’s very close to the Valley of the Butterflies, so you can easily combine the two in one day.
Only 5 minutes from the village are the enchanting Epta Piges, or Seven Springs. A great place for more woodland walks, this nature reserve is notable for its wonderful waterfalls and lake.
A bit more lively, but action-packed, the water-parks of Faliraki offer a lot of fun for everyone. This resort’s very popular beach is all set up for sunbathing, and an aquarium provides another place the kids will love. In nearby Apollonos, there’s the intriguing Astronomy Café, and Faliraki is also the home of Kartodrome, a great go-karting track. They might also get a buzz out of Rhodes’ Bee Museum, or enjoy the local playthings exhibited at the charming Toy Museum near the village of Archipoli.
There’s a lot to see in Rhodes town, with its huge range of shops and cafés offering enough to keep them busy all day. There are multiplex cinemas for the latest movies, and Rodini Park offers a calm spot to escape to. Elli Beach is another relaxing spot – situated by the Rhodes Aquarium, its crystal waters are a joy to chill out by.
The east coast delivers loads more fine beaches. As well as Kolymbia and Tsampika, reckoned to be one of the best beaches on the island, they could check out Anthony Quinn Bay or the quieter Agathi. Down in Lindos, there’s tranquil St Paul’s Bay and, further south, the wonderful Prasonisi Beach – ideal for surfing and kite-surfing. This picturesque island is a real playground, in fact – the excellent sports facilities cover everything from tennis and football to horse-riding, while the watery fun continues with scuba-diving, snorkelling and many more.
