Location
About the surrounding area of Lakhania PounentisRhodes is the perfect place to experience the beautiful Greek islands. Full of wonderful countryside, intriguing old buildings and countless amazing beaches, you will never stop discovering something new.
Don’t miss the Old Town in Rhodes – it’s one of the largest and best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. If you fancy uncovering some local history, try the Archaeological Museum, located at The Palace of the Grand Masters. This huge palace is the main attraction of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and often hosts events and performances. You can also take a tour of part of the building.
The city is a great place for shopping and dining, and its other attractions include the Museum of Modern Greek Art, the Marine Aquarium located by Elli Beach, and the pretty Rodini Park. It’s also the centre of the island’s nightlife scene, with a huge casino, cinemas and countless bars and clubs. If the strip on Orfanidou Street doesn’t deliver what you’re looking for, you might feel more at home in sophisticated Lindos.
Somewhere else with a reputation for lively nightlife, Faliraki lies just down the eastern coast from Rhodes town. It’s not all about hedonism, though – the resort offers good family attractions too. The large beach is very popular, and there are water-parks and a go-karting track. The idyllic Anthony Quinn Bay, a pretty beach with crystal clear waters, is a lovely chillout spot if it all gets too much.
Rhodes has many more beaches down the eastern coast, such as Kolymbia, Agathi and the highly rated Tsampika. One of the most spectacular, Prasonisi, is found right at the tip of the island, and is the go-to beach for lovers of surfing and kite-surfing. Rhodes is ideal for all sorts of sports – there are golf courses, tennis courts and scuba-diving centres, along with opportunities to play beach volleyball and much more. Excellent walking and cycling routes offer more reasons to enjoy the great outdoors.
Making the climb to the clifftop Lindos Acropolis will take you about 20 minutes from the village, but it’s well worth the effort – you won’t forget the incredible views it enjoys from its vantage point. Look down to the village and you may spot some of Lindos’ many rooftop terraces, which are the ideal place to reward yourself with dinner afterwards.
Lastly, be sure to visit The Valley of the Butterflies – one of Rhodes’ best-loved attractions. It’s magical in summer when the hordes of colourful butterflies emerge into the valley. About 35 minutes’ drive from here, there are also the waterfalls of the Epta Piges (Seven Springs), another of Rhodes’ natural wonders.

The Island/Getting There
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.
Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.
The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.
The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.
Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:
- Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
- The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
- For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
- Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) – Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun. Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
- Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
- Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.
How to reach Rhodes island
There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.
By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.
By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesKids of all ages will enjoy their stay at Lakhania Pounentis. From swimming in the large outdoor pool, to chilling on the sun deck, it’s easy to take it easy. Inside, you’ve got comfy bedrooms, free W-Fi and satellite TV – all part of the appeal of this stylish holiday pad.
The villa is a few minutes from the beach too, and Gennadi is just one of many they can enjoy on Rhodes. Further north, there are lovely places like Kolymbia, Agathi and, in Lindos, the charming St Paul’s Bay. Just a few minutes to the south of Gennadi, you’ve got the wonderful Prasonisi Beach too.
The capital city, Rhodes, has its own fine beach close to the medieval Old Town – Elli Beach. It’s right by the Marine Aquarium in the city’s Hydrobiological Station, which sits at the island’s northernmost point. With its characterful tunnels, the aquarium is really worth a visit – they can see all sorts of aquatic life, including turtles and octopuses.
There are several good educational attractions around the island. At Apollonos, just south of Faliraki, is the Astronomy Café, with an astronomy-themed garden, as well as an observatory. Another, just outside Rhodes city, is the Bee Museum of Rhodes, the only one of its kind in Greece, and a fine place to discover all about the industrious bee. They may also find the Toy Museum interesting – situated near the village of Archipoli, this free museum showcases Greek toys from down the decades.
On the other end of the scale are places that are just about fun for its own sake. Faliraki scores well here, with its huge WaterPark offering all the slides and soaking wet rides you would expect. Kartodrome is all about speeding around the go-kart track – exhilarating, and not too far away.
If they are more into nature and wildlife, Rhodes has a few big hitters they will love. The Valley of the Butterflies is perfect for a family day out, especially in summer. The nearby Farma of Rhodes is a good one to do the same day – kids can get close to animals like kangaroos, ponies, sheep and wild boars, and even get a selfie with an ostrich. The other one not to miss is Epta Piges, or the Seven Springs. At this stunning nature reserve, you can swim in the lake, enjoy a woodland walk and admire the amazing waterfalls.
If they’re the active type, Rhodes offers all sorts of sports and activities. They can try tennis, mini-golf, scuba-diving, snorkelling and a whole lot more on land or sea. You can follow some picturesque walking and cycling routes, or why not take it easier and enjoy a boat trip together?
