Location
About the surrounding area of Villa GraylingThe island of Rhodes is large enough to offer a great deal of variety, but compact enough that you can cover a lot of ground in one stay. From the incredible capital in the north, all the way to beautiful Prasonisi beach in the south, there’s plenty to see.
The Old Town in Rhodes is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. The Palace of the Grand Masters is the main attraction, and a walk around the old city walls offers stunning scenery along the way. Must-see sights like the Street of the Knights, Suleman Mosque and the Roloi Clock Tower rub shoulders with attractions dedicated to specific interests, including the Museum of Modern Greek Art and the Archaeological Museum.
In the south, Lindos is the biggest draw – its stunning Acropolis rivals the Palace of the Grand Masters as the island’s top heritage site. The views from this fascinating clifftop building are part of the allure, and well worth the climb to get there. Lindos is also known for its pretty whitewashed centre with many rooftop restaurants to try. Certainly a destination not to miss.
Also well worth a visit is the Valley of the Butterflies – lovely in summer when hordes of colourful butterflies appear. You could combine your visit with a trip to the Epta Piges (Seven Springs), about 35 minutes’ drive south. Swimming in the lake which these beautiful waterfalls flow into is a favourite pastime.
Down the coast from Rhodes town, you’ll find the enticing spa of Kallithea Springs, while Faliraki offers a large, well-equipped beach and a water-park that kids will love. The idyllic Anthony Quinn Bay, south of Faliraki, is a very pretty beach with crystal clear waters that are ideal for snorkelling.
Rhodes has many more beaches along the eastern coast, so look out for Afantou, Archangelos, Agathi and the highly rated Tsampika as you travel south. One of the most spectacular is found right at the tip of the island. Prasonisi is quite a distance from many of the island’s other attractions but worth the trip, especially for surfers. The wonderful surroundings and expansive sands draw in plenty of other visitors too, some of whom come to see the landmark lighthouse.
For evenings out, nightlife is most varied in the centres of Rhodes and Lindos. As well as bars and clubs, you can find some excellent restaurants, many with outdoor terraces and appealing views. Many beaches around the island also have pleasant beach bars. For the daytime, Rhodes is ideal for sports and offers activities like horse riding, scuba-diving and beach volleyball. Fantastic walking and cycling routes offer yet more reasons to make the most of the sun.

The Island/Getting There
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.
Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.
The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.
The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.
Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:
- Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
- The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
- For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
- Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) – Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun. Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
- Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
- Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.
How to reach Rhodes island
There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.
By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.
By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChildren will enjoy Villa Grayling’s great outdoor amenities and close-to-the-beach location. Alongside a lovely pool and terrace of its own, the villa is within a few minutes’ walk of Pefkos and Kavos Beach, with the pretty Lothiarika Beach just a short drive along the coast.
There’s plenty locally to keep them amused. Pefkos has a number of relaxing cafés, while nearby Lardos offers a mini-golf centre with an 18-hole course. There are lots of opportunities to try water-sports around the island too, with diving, snorkelling, swimming, jet-skiing and more.
At Faliraki, you’ll find not only one of the best family beaches on the island, but also an aquarium and the child-friendly Astronomy Café, complete with observatory. Also in Faliraki, a large water-park features a pirate ship and toddlers’ pool and some more extreme slides for the teenagers.
Elsewhere on the island, the scenic Valley of the Butterflies is a treat for nature lovers – at the entrance to the valley, you will also find the Natural History Museum of Rhodes. Nearby, the Farma of Rhodes offers an interactive wildlife experience which is perfect for younger children who will love meeting the animals.
The unmissable Epta Piges, or the Seven Springs, should also be on your list. The lake which the seven springs fill can be accessed via a dark, narrow tunnel with water flowing around your feet – although this might not be everyone’s first choice, so there’s a more pleasant alternative route too.
You can see octopuses, fish, turtles and all sorts of other aquatic life at the Marine Aquarium in Rhodes town’s Hydrobiological Station. The capital city has all sorts of fun in store, with shopping malls, multiplex cinemas and loads of cafés and restaurants, as well as big historic sights from Mandraki Port to the medieval Old Town.
Elli Beach, right by the aquarium, is another good reason to visit, along with the peaceful Rodini Park – said to be the first landscaped park in the world. Look out for the peacocks which roam this tranquil oasis.
Other attractions which children enjoy on the island include an interesting Toy Museum, which is located near Archipoli, about 40 minutes’ drive from Pefkos, featuring local toys from down the decades and all kinds of nostalgic collectibles. There’s definitely a buzz about the Bee Museum of Rhodes, too… About 15 minutes from the capital, it offers a fascinating look at all aspects of these industrious insects.

Wonderful villa, super location
We have stayed here in 2023 and in 2024 and it's a fabulous place.
Location is excellent, literally 5 mins walk to the beach and 5 mins walk to Pefkos centre with all the lovely restaurants and bars. But not noisy - nice and private. The pool is small and possibly a bit too warm (first time I've said that!) but a huge bonus as the surrounding villas don't seem to have pools. Lots of shady areas to escape the sun at various times of day! Villa really clean and owners supply washing pods, dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid and a few cooking basics (as well as the great welcome supplies from Olivers Travels) Very relaxed - after a few days the owner came to greet us and check that all was ok, handed over 4 portions of delicious homemade moussaka. Nothing negative to say about our stay, it was brilliant. Eat at Hellas if you get the chance, amazing food. -
Excellent villa
Very comfortable, very well appointed, very clean, very well stocked of just about everything you could want. We loved the villa and had an absolutely splendid time, and to top it all the owners daughter came round with some freshly cooked dolmades - delicious! Highly recommended.
