Wonderfully homely and comfortable, the 3-bedroom Salakos Villa enjoys a village location on the western side of Rhodes. Around 30 minutes’ drive from the east coast and 45 minutes from the capital, this holiday home features an attractive garden with terrace and pool.

This property offers lovely views of the surrounding area, which can be appreciated from the outdoor terrace. As well as a swimming pool with step access, this space features a covered dining area and loungers. There is also a lawned area next to the pool.

There is direct access from the terrace into the main living area of the house. Inside, you have a cosy lounge with a wood-burning stove, TV, seating and dining areas. Large windows ensure plenty of light as well as a great view out over the pool and beyond. The modern kitchen is equipped with a large fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, and there’s also a breakfast bar with stool seating for two.

Three bedrooms include two doubles and one twin. Wooden ceilings and bare stone walls add character to these well-furnished rooms. There is air-conditioning, and the master bedroom on the upper floor also has a TV and desk. With the inclusion of a sofa-bed in the lounge, Villa Salakos can accommodate up to seven guests. The house has two bathrooms, one with a shower and one with a bathtub.

The village of Salakos is well placed for many of the island’s main attractions. Both the Valley of the Butterflies and the Seven Springs are approximately 30 minutes’ drive away, as are beaches like Tsambika and Kolymbia. Driving to Lindos, home of the Lindos Acropolis will take around 55 minutes, and you can reach the island’s eponymous capital in about 45 minutes. Here you can visit the mighty Palace of the Grand Masters and the rest of Rhodes’ impressive medieval town.

More locally, the village has a handful of cafés and restaurants with outdoor terraces, as well as a small supermarket. Sat at the foot of the Mount of the Prophet Elijah, Salakos enjoys a spectacular setting, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, yet it’s actually most famous for its fine walnuts.

Around 15 minutes away, the beach at Kameiros is an enticing place at which to spend the day. Follow the coastal road south and you will come to the village of Kamiros Skala where there are several fish restaurants by the harbourside.

Rhodes is the perfect place to experience the charm of the Greek islands. Large enough to offer diversity but small enough to be easily navigable, there’s always something new to see not too far away.

Don’t miss the impressive Old Town in Rhodes, one of the largest and best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. The Palace of the Grand Masters is the main attraction of this UNESCO World Heritage site. A walk around the old city walls will help you get your bearings, which may help – there’s a jumble of around 200 streets here, but getting lost is part of the fun. If you fancy uncovering some local history, visit The Museum of Modern Greek Art or the Archaeological Museum.

Rhodes city is the centre of the island’s nightlife, and there are countless bars and clubs. There are some good restaurants (along with quite a few less good ones), as well as multiplex cinemas and the impressive National Theatre. Landmarks like the Rhodes Acropolis and the Fort of St Nicholas are worth looking out for, while the city’s Rodini Park is said the be the world’s oldest landscaped park. There is also a good aquarium, found at the island’s northernmost point.

The Valley of the Butterflies is one of Rhodes’ best-loved attractions. It’s particularly lovely in summer when hordes of colourful butterflies appear. You could combine your visit with a trip to the Epta Piges (Seven Springs), about 35 minutes’ drive south, another magical natural sight. The waterfalls are spectacular in this popular nature reserve.

Down the eastern coast from Rhodes town, Faliraki isn’t just about nightlife. The resort offers good family attractions too. The large beach is very popular, and there are water-parks and a go-karting track. The idyllic Anthony Quinn Bay, a pretty beach with crystal clear waters, is a favoured snorkelling spot, just south of the town.

Rhodes has many more beaches down the eastern coast – look out for Kolymbia, Agathi and Lindos as you venture further south. One of the most spectacular is found right at the tip of the island. As you will no doubt see, the breathtaking Prasonisi is particularly popular with surfers. In fact, Rhodes is ideal for sports of all kinds – golf, tennis, horse riding, scuba-diving, beach volleyball and many more besides. Excellent walking and cycling routes, and the equally excellent weather, offer yet more reasons to enjoy the great outdoors.

The ascent to the clifftop Lindos Acropolis is steep enough to qualify as exercise – it will take about 20 minutes to walk up to it from the village. It’s well worth the effort – you won’t forget the incredible views it enjoys from its vantage point. Later, treat yourself to dinner on one of Lindos’ many rooftop terraces.

The Island/Getting There

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. It’s got a lot of history as it’s been invaded a lot by the Persians, Carians, Ottomans, Italians, and Germans.

Average temperatures go from 20’c in April up to 30’c in July/ August and down to 20’c in November. With an average of 85 rainy days a year they get sunshine for around 280 days.

The island is 90km long with Rhodes town at the northern tip. The airport (Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras") is also in the North (15km from Rhodes Town). Charter flights and Easyjet operate direct from the UK all season and out of season (Nov-March) you’d need to fly via Athens.

The Acropolis – The Acropolis that sits high above the town of Lindos is absolutely amazing and is a must see if you’re looking for some of the best views in all of Rhodes. One thing I should mention is that the climb up to the acropolis requires you to be somewhat active and able to climb stairs, lots of them. The trail begins through town and slowly but surely starts to get steeper as you climb the hill towards the acropolis. Once there, you’re rewarded with historical buildings dating back to 300 BC. Our Villa Corteau sit just underneath the ruins.

Rhodes has over 40 beaches, here are a few:

  • Anthony Quinn’s Bay – Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the most beautiful bays. The bay is located 17km (10 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and offers some incredible photo opportunities to say the least.
  • The beach at Anthony Quinn’s bay is one of the best beaches in Rhodes. Get there early if you want to snag a sunbed and umbrella and enjoy wading around the bright blue and green water. Amazing!
  • For the best views of Anthony Quinn’s Bay from above, head on up to the windy road that leads up the hill just north of the bay and you’ll find a spot where you can sit and enjoy the virtually 180 degree views of Rhodes and its coastline.
  • Tsambika Beach (or Tsampika) –  Tsampika beach is located 30km (18 mi) south of Old Town Rhodes and is a great place to spend the day in the sun.  Note: Beware there is a small section where nudists congregate on Tsampika beach
  • Lakido Beach – Just opposite Anthony Quinn’s Bay is Lakido beach. It’s literally 3 minutes walking distance from Anthony Quinn’s bay so visiting both beaches in a day is totally doable. As a matter of fact, I would highly recommend visiting both if you get the chance
  • Faliraki Beach – One of the most popular tourist spots on the island of Rhodes. It was known for 18-30’s holiday in the 90-2000’s but I don’t think there is that market so much now. It is quite commercialised now there are water sports and a few diving schools.

How to reach Rhodes island

There are two ways to reach Rhodes Island: either by flight or by ferry.

By plane: If you don’t want to lose time you can fly to Rhodes (RHO) from Athens. The flight lasts 1 hour. Many direct flights also operate from many European countries, so it will not be difficult to arrive there.

By ferry: If you choose to travel from Piraeus to Rhodes with a ferry, it will surely take you much longer but travelling with a ferry in the summer nights can be pretty enticing! The port of Rhodes is located in the southern part of the island and offers bus services to the town centre. You can easily book your ferry tickets using the link below or the booking engine.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

The whole family will love Villa Salakos – there’s everything they could want from a holiday home. As well as a lovely garden with a pool, the house is equipped with comfy bedrooms, satellite TV and Wi-Fi. There’s even a high-chair waiting for the very youngest. It’s a short drive from the beach at Kameiros, and there are lots of great restaurants to dine at in the area.

There’s a lot more they will enjoy around the island. One of the best family beaches on the island is at Faliraki. It’s well equipped and has lots of amenities nearby. There’s an aquarium in town, and a couple of water-parks, as well as the great go-karting centre, Kartodrome. To the south of Faliraki, look out for the Astronomy Café in Apollonos – an incredible spot from which to watch the stars.

There are turtles, octopuses, exotic fish and all sorts of other aquatic life at the Marine Aquarium in Rhodes town’s Hydrobiological Station. It’s just one reason to head for the capital city – it also has the best shopping on the island, with many familiar names, and plenty of places to grab an ice cream or some fast food.

About 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Rhodes town is another place worth making a beeline for. The Bee Museum of Rhodes is a one-of-a-kind attraction in Greece and will teach them all about these amazing insects.

The scenic Valley of the Butterflies is one of the island’s big attractions, a 600-acre nature reserve which, in summer, is filled with the winged creatures. At the entrance to the valley, you will also find the Natural History Museum of Rhodes. Located nearby, the Farma of Rhodes offers an interactive wildlife experience with animals such as kangaroos, ponies, ostriches and llamas.

The enchanting Epta Piges, or the Seven Springs, is one not to miss. The lake which the seven springs fill can, if you’re brave, be accessed via a dark, narrow tunnel as water flows around your feet. There are lots of nice areas of woodland in which to have a picnic too.

If you’re in Rhodes town, head to the tranquil Rodini Park to see the peacocks and to chill out in some peaceful surroundings. Alternatively, make your way down the east coast to look for your favourite beach. Things get a bit quieter and calmer after Faliraki, with Anthony Quinn Bay, Kolymbia and Agathi just some of those you may like to try. At the southern end of the island, Prasonisi is a popular spot for kite-surfing – or you may wish to head out to the Prasonisi Lighthouse to check out the view from there.
