Location
About the surrounding area of Villa MichaelaSantorini is an Instagramers dream, so you need to get out to explore.
The beaches are legendary, but Red Beach is probably the most amazing.
You should visit the idyllic town of Ola with views over the volcano of Palia and Nea Kameni islands.
You should try to do at least one tour. If you like walking, the Caldera path between Fira and Oia is a must-do; some tours cover this. There are wine tours, boat tours, such as sunset or a volcano one, where you can pool and towns to visit.
Greek food is always good, but the mashed Fava bean, 'hummus' is one of Santorini's best local foods. Santorini's Cherry tomatoes are unique, so much so they have a museum dedicated to them. Also, try the Tomato Keftedes (Tomato balls). Unsurprisingly the local fish and seafood is good too. Finally, there is Melitinia, hand-prepared pasty stuffed with local soft cheese called "anthotyro" or "myzithra". They are only made in Santorini, and they are a delicious dessert!

Region
Experience the romance of southern Santorini whether falling in love with Pyrgos, visiting the wineries of Megalochori, swimming from the volcanic shores of Red Beach or watching the sunset from Akrotiri Lighthouse.
Start your explorations by visiting the hilltop village of Pyrgos and be captivated by its charm and panoramic views. It’s here you can truly soak up the authenticity of Santorini without the tourist crowds of Oia, and the sunsets are still magical. The ruins of the Venetian Castle at the top of the village afford the most wonderful vistas across the island.
Another beautiful village is 17th century Megalochori, surrounded by vineyards and considered one of Santorini’s hidden gems. Stop off for lunch in a taverna in the main square and listen out for the chiming belltower. Be sure to visit one the village’s family-run wineries that produce Vinsanto, a sweet wine made from grapes left out to dry in the sun, then aged in oak barrels. Across past centuries the wine industry brought great wealth to this part of the island.
For change of scene, spend time by the beaches of the eastern coast – Perissa is considered the best beach resort in Santorini, sheltered from the island winds by Mesa Vouno. There’s sun beds and parasols along the beach, a range of watersports, seafood restaurants facing the sea and an overall laidback ambience across the town’s beachside bars.
Other unique coastal destinations include the volcanic pebbles of Red Beach and the dark rocks of Black Beach, both located on the south-west corner of the island. Southern Santorini is also home to the ancient site of Akrotiri and the incredible Akrotiri Lighthouse overlooking the edge of the caldera, an especially idyllic spot at sunset.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesWith lots of scenic walking and bike trails, plenty of beautiful calm swimming beaches, and exciting historic sites, Skopelos is the perfect holiday destination for families, however good to bear in mind the topography isn't particularly suitable for kids. Most of the beautiful towns are stacked on hilltops, which means there are narrow pathways and steep steps everywhere you go, not great for pushchairs or prams.
Kids enjoy exploring the two towns on the island; Pyrgos is built on a hill with an old castle on top and fantastic views. Emporio is flatter and smaller, but both offer plenty of opportunities to get happily lost. The cobbled streets of Oia and Fira may also be of interest. Ice cream, crepes, and a few stories about exploding volcanoes will add to the experience.
There is the Kamari open-air cinema. The movies aren't always kid-friendly, so check the schedule in advance, but they're usually popular movies in English (with Greek subtitles).

Really fantastic
Absolutely as advertised, and furnished as though it was lived in, not bland and bare as so many are. The owner was on hand when we arrived and knew the island well, offering to arrange any tours, visits, boat trips etc. She also texted or called most days just to check everything was okay, and to see if we needed anything. She could not have been more helpful. A maid came in daily for a general tidy up, clean and towel change etc. The coast road does pass by the front of the villa, but it's not too busy and is lower down than the villa garden, so it's a small price to pay to have such an amazing view.

Stunning views
We had a lovely week at Villa Michaela. Nikos was a very attentive host and made sure we were enjoying our visit. Leila was the kindest housekeeper and took excellent care of us. The house itself met our needs superbly, but the best part is the incredible views across the Caldera. We spent endless hours outside enjoying the views - morning coffees by the pool, swimming, a glass of wine in the evenings, watching the stunning sunsets. There is some road noise, but given the house is in Akrotiri, it's still much quieter than the areas around Oia and Thira.
