Trulli Le Mandorle

Overview
There are so many reasons to visit Puglia; the white sandy beaches, striking Baroque architecture, beautiful food and the sun of course. And then there's the trulli - these magical, conical houses that look like they've sprung up from the pages of a J.R.R. Tolkien book.
Traditional dry stone huts, these trulli were originally home to the peasant families of the area. Today, they are luxury homes - and you can stay in one! Take Trulli Le Mandorle. This 250-year-old elegantly restored villa, set in 5 acres of peaceful countryside scattered with olive groves and fruit trees, is special indeed.
In keeping with its true form, the owners have managed to retain as many original features as possible, from the high vaulted ceilings to the open fire, alcoves and thick, stone walls. And then they've built a home around it.
The cosy living and kitchen/dining areas are cleverly incorporated into the arched recesses of the building, while two charming bedrooms (one double and one twin/double) are designed for ultimate comfort. It's almost impossible to pull yourself away from this magical little property, until...
...you step outside into the Mediterranean gardens to pick fresh fruit from the bountiful orchards for an al fresco breakfast. Sitting outside, not only can you enjoy your immediate countryside surroundings, there are sweeping views of distant villages in the hills, and a gorgeous new split-depth saltwater pool that adults and kids alike will adore. Here the whole family can enjoy splashing about in the utmost peace, and if you're a couple on honeymoon, you'd be hard pushed to find anywhere quite so romantic.
Once you've had your refreshing dip, try out the hot & cold water shower that's under a 150-year-old ancient olive tree in the garden. Now, there's an experience you won't forget.
All that's left to do is explore the area. Just five miles from the whitewashed town of Ostuni and Martina Franca, and 20 km from the pristine sandy beaches of Villanova, you're spoilt for choice. And if you're not eating out in one of the rustic trattorias or Michelin star restaurants, don't forget to pick up some of the local pasta to make back at the trullo. It's 'orecchiette' and it means 'little ears.' And it's a little treat, just like Trulli le Mandole.

Owner Profile
How long have you owned the property?
15 years.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
It is set amongst acres of ancient olive trees, figs, almonds, pomegranates, and other fruit trees. Sweeping views of distant hill-town villages can be enjoyed from every window. There is a magical peacefulness of the land and gentle noises of nature. Birds are happy here.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The great-great grandfather of the family was one of the founders of Pascarosa; he was of strict religious propensity and quite feared by the villagers as he preached weekly. His name was Alfonso: Pascarosa is now full of inhabitants bearing the same name!
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Rick Stein visited the trullo and this is what he wrote: “My friend Anna Maggio, has bought one just outside Ostuni and renovated it into an amazingly atmospheric house set in an olive grove.” (Rick Stein, Mediterranean Escapes).
For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...
Really do?
Walk around the area, swim (explore the hundreds of tiny coves), go on a boat trip, birdwatch, go to Torre Guaceto (a nature reserve), see ancient olive mills (‘ipogei’: grottos).
Really eat?
Orecchiette con cime di rape, braciole (involtini) al sugo, fiori di zucchine fritte, melanzane ripiene, puntarelle in insalata, rucola con cavatelli, artichokes, caciocavallo, burrata. And lots of fresh local fish.
Really see?
The baroque town of Lecce, Ostuni (the white city), Cisternino, Taranto and its museum, Martina Franca for its architecture and the opera opera under the stars: July/August.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
The small towns are to be explored by walking, marvelling at the baroque facades and enjoying the slow pace of life which still exists here. The food is generally more authentic in small trattorias (not always!), and fish is best eaten by the sea.

The perfect place to reset, loved it
Peace and quiet are words used out of place sometimes, until of course you experience it. Here in this beautiful Trulli surrounded by silence you get to really enjoy what it actually sounds like.
We have really benefitted from the spaces you have nurtured here, so thank you so much for that.
The perfect place to reset, loved it and a huge thank you!!

An amazing week, we would love to come back!
We have loved our time here and the experience of staying in a trullo. We have enjoyed the pool and cooking outside on the BBQ after gathering fresh produce out of the gardens. There is everything you need here and more!
Loved the family pizza restaurant in the village and the sandwiches made in the Ladies’ cafe!
Ostuni, Martina Franca and Locorotondo are beautiful towns to visit.
An amazing week, we would love to come back! -
We have had a fantastic week.
We have had a fantastic week. We love the trullo and have made the most of the pool (which is perfect for small kids at the shallow end). The figs, lemons, basil, rosemary all growing in the garden, the BBQ and outdoor shower!
We have had beautiful day trips out to surrounding areas, and the family restaurant in the village!
The beautiful surroundings have provided the perfect setting for special family memories! -
This property lives up to its name of a 'Paradise'
We felt very at home here. I love the property, the grounds, the restoration, the books, the general atmosphere. The house's architecture and the restauration of the building, what a feat and what an adventure...

Beautiful trullo
We have had a heavenly week here. The place has taken peace and relaxation to another level. Thank you so much Ann for restoring and protecting this beautiful trullo and its ancient olive grove. Now looked after by two friendly, very conversational Puglia’s felines.
We hope to return.

Relaxation and happiness!
A wonderful week in this beautiful tranquil trullo. I'm leaving totally relaxed and happy. The weather - mostly warm and sunny; the early mornings with the sun coming up were magical, matched by the 7pm sunsets and the rising moon.
It’s difficult to sound not too enthusiastic, but I do love it here!
Thank you.
PS the outdoor shower is perfect!
