Overview
If you are looking for a character-filled base for your trip to Puglia, then look no further than Trullo Itria. This historic building was rescued from ruin by the owners and lovingly restored using traditional materials and décor to create a warm and welcoming place to stay. With a range of pretty villages under 10km away and beaches only 20km away, you will have plenty to see and do while on holiday here.
As you approach this beautiful home through fields of fig trees and olive groves, you will spot the iconic, whitewashed cone-topped buildings, surrounded by native planting and overlooking the sea beyond. This home is a delightful place to spend your Italian escape and can sleep four guests so would be ideal for a small family or two couples travelling together.
The house is all on one level and is made up of four original trullos which are only found in this part of Italy, as well as a recently constructed lamia, a stunning room with vaulted ceilings which fits seamlessly in with the rest of the property. Within these rooms you will find a living room, a writer’s nook, a well-equipped kitchen and two cosy bedrooms. The interiors have been designed to reflect the simplistic beauty of these agricultural buildings which were built in the early 18th-century, so inside you will see exposed stone work, an open-fireplace and locally made blankets and handicrafts. The owners however have also endeavoured to provide guests with modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and chic bathrooms with walk-in showers.
Surrounding the home is a gorgeous garden packed with bee-friendly florals, shrubs and lawned areas. There is a pergola with a large dining table which looks over wooded hillsides and the dazzling Adriatic Sea, plus there is a swimming pool for a refreshing dip on a hot afternoon.
This part of Puglia is dotted with charming hamlets and villages which you can visit with ease. The closest village is few kilometers away and offers a number of amenities, such as a small grocery shop, a bar and a restaurant serving barbecued meats which is a local speciality.
This Trullo is perfect for those who wish to be located in the countryside, and a car will be needed to move around and discover more beauty. The Trullo has a unique charm with its agricultural style, renovated but still humble to its origins.
Also nearby you are able to visit the much-loved town of Alberobello which is 17km away, the ancient seaside town of Polginano a Mare which is 30km away and the stunning beaches of the Adriatic coastline such as Savelletri beach and Torre Canne beach which are approximately 20km away.

Location
About the surrounding area of Trullo ItriaTrullo Itria is a charming home which is set in an enviable position, nestled amongst Puglian farmland and olive groves. Though the home is located on a serene hillside, you will not have to travel far to find pretty villages, amenities and the sweeping coastline.
Close to the house you can find walking and cycling routes which are great for getting out in nature. If you need to pick up some groceries or would like to dine out without driving, you will discover a small village just 1km away, with a restaurant, shop and bar.
There are plenty more villages and towns you can visit close to the house and one wonderful place to explore is Locorotondo which is an 8km drive away. Locorotondo is one of nine breath-taking whitewashed towns which are scattered around the hills in this part of Puglia. The town spirals outwards from the church which is at its heart and is packed with the beloved Trulli buildings. Locorotondo is less of a tourist hub than some other nearby towns which gives it an unspoilt and authentic atmosphere. While here you can wander around the narrow alley-ways lined with homes, artisan shops and family-run trattorias where you can tuck in to a delicious lunch.
Another must-visit location is the breath-taking town of Alberobello which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to preserve the Trulli buildings. The town is a mere 17km away from the villa and is one of the areas top attractions. While here you can shop for souvenirs in the local shops, sample regional dishes in the cafes which spill out in to the town squares and visit the museum to learn more about the area. You could even book on to a Puglian cookery class and impress your family at dinner with your new skills.
On top of having some fantastic hilltop villages, Puglia is also blessed with a gorgeous coastline dotted with sandy beaches. Torre Canne beach is one of the closest to the villa at 20km away and is a fabulous place to spend the day sunbathing and paddling in the sea. The beach also has a bustling harbour and a lighthouse close by. A little further along the coast is Savelletri beach which boasts exclusive beach clubs with great facilities and bars.
You are even well-placed for a day trip to Polignano a Mare which is 30km away and home to some of the most incredible beaches in all of Italy as well as a lively town centre. Though Polignano a Mare is renowned for its beaches, make sure to head in to town and pay a visit to some of the ancient churches, museums and galleries. Poetry lovers will also be enjoy following the outdoor poetry trail which winds around the town. As night falls Polignano a Mare offers a wide array of restaurants which overlook the sea and if you fancy going dancing and indulging in a cocktail or two, you will find some great bars and clubs to choose from.

Owner Profile
When did you become the owner?
We bought the property in 2017 when it was just a pile of collapsed rocks but its position, high on the hill overlooking the sea, stayed with us and so, we bought it and embarked on a restoration and construction of a lamia to add a bedroom, en suite and kitchen. It’s an ongoing joy for us as we slowly give the abandoned olive grove and fruit trees TLC and create more usable areas.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
Its location perched in quiet countryside surrounded by olives and fig trees – but with this sweeping view. And the potential to bring it back to life.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
It is full of fascinating stories and as we restored it, I wrote a blog about our adventures, including meeting a lady, now in her 70s, whose granny owned the trullo and her sister’s grandson who spent his summers there. The trullo is filled with ceramics and bowls that were in the trullo 50 years ago – and the descendants of the original owners are firm friends, like family really! The trullo bedroom was home to a horse originally!
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
We are journalists and authors – we couldn’t possibly tell you who are guests are!
For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…
Must do?
Plan a visit to the Locorotondo market early Friday morning to do the food shopping – fresh fruit and vegetables, olives, taralli, all the. very best local Puglian fare. Also, visit Lecce, the Florence of the south, that’s at least a day trip and Otranto which again requires a day but you will see the most spectacular, huge mosaic dating back to the 10th century and depicting the Tree of Life. Unforgettable
Must eat?
If you are a meat eater, people come from all over Italy to the braceria/ristorante less than a 1km away. You choose the fresh meat, local, organic and delicious and it’s chargrilled in the ancient stove oven. House wines, a plate of house made charcuterie, simple iceberg lettuce salad and honestly, one of our favourite evenings out.
Must see?
Archeolido is a beach lido in line of sight of the trullo – you can walk the ancient ruins of Egnazia and swim over Messapican tombs, which are some 6,000 years old.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
Locorotondo is a delight for evening sunset aperitivi or a delicious dinner in the whitewashed streets, but parking can be difficult. Parcheggio Piazza Aldo Moro car park costs about 60 cents an hour and is a 30 second walk from the historic centre. It’s our best insider tip!

Trullo Itria: THE APULIAN DREAM
You know a place has well and truly grabbed you by the heart strings when you travel 16,000 kms as the crow flys to get there. Not once, but twice. And we leave this morning full of hopes and dreams and goals there will be a next time. Poised atop the hills hugging Fasano, and looking out over fruit orchards and olive groves to the Adriatic in the distance, this trullo has been brought back to life by its owners with the love on show in ever single place. you care to stop and gaze. We alternate between hangs at home (yes, that’s how it feels to us) and day trip adventures to other villages near and far - Locorontondo, Martina Franca, Matera, Monolpoli, Bari, Alberobello and more. For two weeks, we slide into a slower pace of being, luxuriating in summer days which begin before 5am and last until 8pm when the sun finally sets to the west of the trullo.; we stock up at the local market and feast on figs and cherries dripping from the trees on the property. We walk into the local. village and pick up the local bombette - fine rolls of beef filled with cheese, or pancetta, or both -from a reknown butcher and grill them over hot coals, glass of local white in hand as we look out towards the sea. Some mornings we head out to pick up ricotta made overnight to eat with fresh figs we’ve picked from trees footsteps from the back door, grilled with local honey and pancetta cured by the butcher less than a kilometre away. We’re in the midst of it all if we want to be, or treated to days spent in utter, total, seemingly isolated bliss if we wish to be. At night, we sleep under the conical trullo roof, and just wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. This trullo has been exquisitely restored, with complete respect to its origins, and furnished and styled with care and love. The kitchen it’s hesrt, and we can’t imagine anyone not wanting to hang around it’s over 100 year old marble table, passed on to the owner by her grandmother, enjoying a local wine and taralli, while preparing dinner. It’s hard to leave. Every day we’re there. It’s that special. On our last morning we spend the last hour in the pool, every fibre of our being wishing we could stay.. The generosity of spirit of the trullo’s owners. Paola & Robert, is everywhere - in the books to read, the herb & tomato garden, the will-never-run-out supply of olive oil at hand, their go to tips on local eats and experiences designed to give you a true Apulian experience, the hand croteched place mats you know Paola has made. Just book. Experience of a lifetime. Heart place.

Everything is perfect!
My family and I spent a week at the Trullo Itria and we found more than we expected, in person it is even more beautiful than in the photo! The renovation took place with respect for the land on which it is located. The furnishings, the swimming pool, the external pergola are beautiful... everything is perfect! However, what was even more important was the presence and kindness of the local team, always ready to advise and available at all hours. If we were to return to Puglia we will certainly rely on you. Thanks a million.

A great holiday!
We chose Trullo Itria for its simple beauty and we can confirm, after having been there, that it is truly an immersion in the taste and typicality of the trulli valley. Sleeping in absolute silence and waking up to beautiful light and the sun above the pool is truly priceless. Trullo Itria has all the comforts to spend comfortable and relaxing days. We liked to stay there in the morning and then move on to discover the beaches of the coast and the many villages that are absolutely worth visiting. A great holiday!!

Italian excellence!
My husband Roberto and I stayed last week in the Trullo Itria, near Locorotondo, repeating last year's experience of the holiday in the trullo which I really recommend taking, an Italian excellence. A dream week in this beautiful trullo, an oasis of peace among the olive trees and with a breath-taking view of the sea. The pool is beautiful, we never left it. The Itria valley has a special place in our heart. I warmly thank the local team for their kindness and perfect organization.
