Overview

Pool Quirky All Bedrooms En-Suite Ideal for Parties

A lovingly restored former mill dating back to 1500, Bacchereto Millhouse is an enchanting Tuscan villa in an exceptionally scenic area within easy reach of Florence, the jewel in Tuscany’s crown. Immersed in a lush, mature garden with woodland trails to explore around it, the mill feels like an oasis of calm with its beautiful pool, wide terraces and elegant interiors.

The picturesque approach to the villa along a winding country road through trees, vineyards and fields of olive and cypress trees is just a prelude to the magical setting of the mill. The glorious sound of leaves swirling in the wind greets you as you arrive at your impressive holiday home and the sight of the verdant gardens and inviting pool is the moment you will truly start to unwind.

Inside, the villa is equally charming with its welcoming living space and elegant style. Restored original features are cleverly combined with contemporary additions, such as the barrel-vaulted ceiling and exposed stone walls which run from the comfortable sofas and fireplace of the sitting area, through to a grand dining table and a light-filled modern kitchen. It is a comfortable layout for everyone to gather or find a quiet corner.

Upstairs, three bedrooms are styled for comfort with pretty rugs on wooden floors and private bathrooms, so ideal either for a group of friends or family. Adjoining self-contained apartment is for those who appreciate a bit of independence with its private bathroom, kitchen and door to the courtyard.

It is in the idyllic gardens and on the terraces where you will spend the most time in the summer months, cooling off in the pool, enjoying a refreshing evening drink or cooking together with the pizza oven and barbecue on hand. Outside it feels wonderfully spacious with a welcome choice of sitting and dining spaces by the pool and villa.

Pathways from the villa lead to the surrounding woodland for invigorating walks and sublime views of vineyards and olive groves. Supplies, coffee and ice cream are an easy drive away at the local village while an amazing array of places to visit are all reachable within an hour from the villa, such as the city of Florence in all its Renaissance splendour to the fascinating thermal spa town of Montecatini Terme and the wineries of Carmignano.

What you should know…

  • Due to various characterful features in both the beautiful grounds (terraced levels, steps, uneven paths and proximity of pond and waterfall) as well as inside, this house is best suited to older children.
  • Fourth bedroom is a private apartment with its own kitchen and en-suite bathroom, accessed either from the courtyard or through the house.
  • The last part of the country road leading to the villa is unpaved so make sure your car is built for the country and not low slung.
  • The pool is shared with the owners who reside in a home in the same grounds. They are otherwise quiet and respect guests' privacy.

Bacchereto Millhouse is located in a scenic and fertile area of Tuscany dating back to Etruscan times, famous for its Carmignano red wine. A Medici family game reserve during the Renaissance and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the area continues to allure visitors to its wonderful wineries, excellent restaurants and stunning countryside.

Some of the best sites in Tuscany are reachable within an hour of the villa so careful planning will be needed to choose everyone’s favourites. Florence is the nearest large town just 20km away, a must-see for its amazing collection of Renaissance art and architecture, a fantastic range of boutiques and a wide selection of restaurants.

Take a funicular railway to the spa town of Montecatini Terme for its healing thermal springs and glorious views. Visit Pisa’s iconic leaning tower or give in to the allure of beautiful Lucca with its perfectly formed historical centre, its wide walls designed to protect it from invaders, now a pleasant place for a gelato, stroll or cycle.

Restaurants, a supermarket and village shops are all easily accessible just a short drive from the villa, in the villages in the surrounding Montalbano hills. Good food plays a central role in Tuscan life so enter into the spirit, find a scenic spot, sip on Carmignano’s best wine and be sure to try the region’s best seasonal produce. From light tomato panzanella or fagioli bean dishes to wild boar stews and fresh pasta, all finished off with mouth-watering cantucci biscuits and Vin santo dessert wine, Tuscan cuisine cannot fail to disappoint.

Kids

Best Suited For: Teens
Ideal for Teens

A family holiday at Bacchereto Mill House offers a welcome contrast to a busy school timetable. The mature garden around the mill spans a large area on different levels with steps leading up and down from terraces, along pathways through trees and by the river. It is fun for active, older children who love to explore the outdoors. As some of the steps around the pool and terraces are open on one side with no safety barriers or handrails, it is not however recommended for younger children.

Excellent food is often a highlight of a holiday in Tuscany! The villa has its own outdoor pizza oven so budding pizza chefs will have hours of endless fun baking their favourite pizzas using delicious fresh Italian tomatoes and cheese. For a real taste of Tuscan home cooking, there are some wonderful local restaurants or a cook can come over and prepare delicious meals for you in the more intimate setting of your home which is always a memorable experience.

There are so many interesting places to explore in the area. Highlights for teens and tweens are a cycle ride around Lucca’s ancient city walls, visiting the leaning tower of Pisa and riding up the funicular railway to the dramatic setting of Montecatini Terme with its fountains, spa and shops.

The choice of places to visit in Florence can be overwhelming. Start off by viewing the city from above, from Piazzale Michelangelo or from the top of the cathedral dome. Taking in the main artistic sites can be balanced with a trip to the magnificent Boboli gardens for a stroll or picnic. After a morning admiring artworks at the Uffizi gallery, the promise of a generous helping of creamy gelato in a cone or large bowl of fresh pasta at a local trattoria cannot fail to delight children of all ages.
