Sitting in a valley covered with towering trees and rolling pastureland, Villa Pompelmo is a fantastic base for exploring this quiet corner of eastern Tuscany. Nearby you can discover countryside walking trails, pretty villages and medieval towns or drive further afield to Siena or Tuscany for day trips.
Villa Pompelmo is a vast home which was a former hotel, meaning it is perfectly set up to accommodate a large group of guests who will have plenty of space to gather together for a glass of wine in the evenings or for lazy lunches in the expansive dining room. The house is a warm and welcoming home from home spread over three floors.
The villa has numerous living rooms, a few of the living spaces and the large dining room have floor-to-ceiling windows which look over the leafy garden and allow the natural light to flood into the cosy rooms. Meals can be prepared in the well-equipped professional-style kitchen with all of the appliances you could need or, if you would prefer, use the wood-burning oven and barbecue in the garden.
When it is time to turn in for the night, guests can choose from a staggering ten bedrooms! Two of these rooms are connected in a family suite ideal for those with young children. There are also seven double bedrooms, some with en-suite bathrooms and two with twin beds. Whether travelling with the extended family or with a big group of friends for a special occasion, you will indeed have a restful night here.
Outdoors, a lush landscaped garden envelops the home and boasts a covered dining area, a sun-drenched terrace and a private pool with a shallow area for children. These facilities are surrounded by established trees and floral shrubbery to create a lovely, calming space to spend lazy afternoons together making memories.
In the 10km around the home, guests can head out into the unspoilt natural landscape on long walks through the hills, take bike rides through the stunning valleys, and book organised horseback rides with equine companies. Sports lovers can also access tennis courts and golf courses nearby, while those who prefer to enjoy the great outdoors with a glass of wine in hand can sample locally produced wines at an array of family-run vineyards in the area.
When you wish to dine out, there is a rustic pizzeria just down the road and a few more traditional restaurants scattered around the nearby hillsides. For a greater range, you should head into the gorgeous hill town of Anghiari, which is 12km away. Brimming with artisan shops and a wealth of restaurants and bars, Anghiari is a beautiful place to visit, with great cultural and historical attractions. The city of Arezzo is larger still and is just 17km away. This amazing Etruscan city should make your itinerary as it is packed with things to see and do and has some brilliant restaurants to stop at for dinner before heading home for the evening.

Location
About the surrounding area of Villa PompelmoSitting in the heart of the rolling hills of Tuscany, Villa Pompelmo is the perfect place to stay to explore the romantic, character-filled villages and towns nearby, as well as the beautiful countryside and parklands in the surrounding area. Here you can enjoy relaxing days in the rural landscape and other days can be filled touring ancient cities.
Anghiari is the closest town to the villa and is 12km away. This town is friendly, welcoming, and one of Tuscany’s most beautiful walled towns. Weavers, ceramicists and skilled woodworkers brought wealth into the town in the medieval era, and today this focus on crafts and artwork has continued. The streets here are filled with art studios, antique shops and artisan craft shops, and there is even a museum based around these traditional crafts and skills.
The beautiful town squares boast plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants as well as churches like the 7th century Church of Santo Stefano and a number of palaces including the Palazzo del Marzocco. The Palazzo del Marzocco now houses a museum with an exhibition on the Battle of Anghiari in 1440 between Florence and Milan. If you visit Tuscany in July, you could take in some of the shows which make up the Anghiari Festival which showcases choral and chamber music.
For a wider range of attractions and amenities, visit Arezzo, 17km away. The city is steeped in history and started as an Etruscan settlement over 1000 years ago. Over time, the city grew as it became an essential stop on trade routes and was constantly caught up in battles, meaning its fortress was much-needed for defence and was rebuilt by the important Medici family in 1500. Visitors to the city can explore the fortress, which now hosts art and history exhibitions and a park on the grounds.
There are many more sights to see here in Arezzo, including The Basilica of Saint Francis, a Romanesque church which is home to a number of Renaissance masterpieces such as frescoes by Piero della Francesca and the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art. Wherever you look in the city, you will find maze-like streets filled with palaces, churches, cafes, restaurants, shops and markets.
Another beautiful city you can explore is Città di Castello which is 33km away. This eclectic city is made up of medieval, Renaissance and modern homes and shops. Città di Castello boasts markets, restaurants and a vibrant cafe culture inside the original walls. Historic and cultural attractions are bountiful here, with countless museums and art galleries for you to explore, as well as an 11th century bell tower and the home of artist Alberto Burri.
In addition to these amazing towns and cities, the lush countryside enclosing the villa offers lots to see and do. Here you can walk through staggering green valleys, taste local wines at family-run vineyards, explore medieval castles and visit beauty spots such as Lago di Montedoglio, 26km away.
