The Lunigiana is a beautiful mountainous region of Italy which encompasses areas of Tuscany and neighbouring Liguria. This rural landscape dotted with historic towns and castles is an idyllic place to stay for a relaxing break.

Canossilla is a recently restored villa within a little hamlet overlooking the surrounding hills and mountains. Other than a few nearby homes, you are in an entirely secluded location. The nearest amenities are a 5km drive away and the nearest town is 11km away.

This villa is made up of 3 suites on the ground floor and an apartment on the first floor. 10 guests can stay here in comfort and there is the option to connect the downstairs suites if you would prefer this. Canossilla is ideal for those travelling in a group but wishing for some privacy too. Each of the downstairs suites has a double bedroom, a bathroom and a small kitchen. Also on the ground floor there is a spacious living room where all guests can come together over a glass of local wine in the evening, and has two sofa beds for extra sleeping space.

Upstairs in the apartment there are 2 further bedrooms and also a large kitchen and dining space which can be utilised by the whole party. This light and airy room leads directly out on to the first-floor terrace, a great spot for your morning coffee with a view.

As well as the terrace, the house also has a vast garden with lawned areas and lush native planting. You are able to enjoy dramatic panoramas over the mountains and the valley below as you take a dip in the inviting private pool or maybe you would prefer to unwind on the sun loungers with a good book. As the sun sets why not make use of the barbecue and al-fresco dining area and cook up an Italian feast!

When you need to pick up some groceries or would like some fresh pastries for breakfast, then the closest village with a shop, restaurants and bakery is only 5km away. You can also discover a wealth of walking and hiking routes near to the villa or if you would prefer to see more of the landscape on horseback then riding is available just 3km away.

A little further afield there are plenty of larger villages and towns you can visit too such as Aulla which is 11km away from the villa. Aulla is a town which is positioned in between two rivers on the Via Fracigena pilgrim trail, it has a great range of shops, restaurants and bustling markets as well as museums, archaeological sites and a castle so there is lots to see and do.

There are countless charming villages and hill towns just a short drive away from the villa which you can visit, including Villafranca in Lunigiana which is 16km away and Bagnone which is 22km away. If you would like a day at the coast, then the famous beaches and villages of the breath-taking Cinque Terre are also just 35km away!

Due to the unspoilt landscape of mountains and dramatic tree-filled valleys, this green region looks as if it has not changed much since it was first settled 2000 years ago. If you are searching for somewhere to stay where you can spend quality time with friends and family while immersed in nature then Canossilla is perfect for this. When you wish to see more of the surrounding areas there are many towns and beaches across Northern Tuscany and Liguria which are easily reached by car.

This villa is a great base for those who enjoy walking, hiking or cycling as you are able to join routes straight outside of the house which will take you through the surrounding hills and forested areas. Another lovely way to see more of the landscape is to take part in an organised horse trek which you can do from a farm just 3km away, this would be a memorable trip for all ages.

Another much-loved feature of this area are the cave systems which are plentiful in Tuscany and Liguria. An example of these caves can be seen 32km from the villa is a spa town called Equi Terme; you can spend the whole day exploring this magical place as there are healing hot springs and pools for bathing, amazing caves filled with archaeological sites and natural formations and also the ancient village to wander around.

As you drive around the hills and valleys you will spot lots of little hilltop villages which you can visit, you could drive to a different one each day as there are so many, each with their own characters and charm.  Villafranca in Lunigiana is one such village and is 16km away from the house. This village and others like it are perfect for getting a true feel of Italian village life where many people still farm the surrounding land for cereal crops. As you wander around the streets, the medieval origins of the village will be apparent as you see the defensive walls and parts of the fortress built in the 12th century. In one of the old mill buildings there is also a museum where you can learn more about local life and village history. While here make sure to try some of the tasty delicacies such as a chestnut cake called pattona.

Though the villa is rurally located you can also reach bigger towns and beaches with ease by car. Aulla is just 11km away and has lots of restaurants and shops plus sprawling markets, archaeological ruins and an imposing 16th century castle to see. You can also be in the heart of the Cinque Terre villages within a 35km drive; this collection of 5 beautiful cliffside fishing villages are a must-visit location. The villages are traffic-free and are a wonderful place to go to walk around the colourful streets visiting artisan shops, sampling local foods and of course paying a visit to one of the picturesque beaches.

This location is ideal for heading off the beaten track and seeing different aspects of Italy. One amazing place you can visit with the children is called The Straits of Giaredo and is 36km away from the villa. This is a vast canyon with pristine pools and caves which is truly gorgeous. You can choose to visit and look around by yourselves or book on to a guided tour if your kids are over the age of 6. A guide will take you up to some of the hidden spots where children can climb and have fun with all safety equipment provided.

If you visit the port city of La Spezia which is a popular location 31km from the villa, make sure to take the children to the impressive Castle of San Giorgio.
