Overview
Torre La Marmora is a medieval home complete with its own tower which looks down over the remains of the ancient town of Ocriculum, located in Umbria the green heart of Italy.
Sleeping eight people across four bedrooms, this fantastic home is ideal for a family break in the lush Italian countryside. A perfect blend of old and new, Torre La Marmora has all the modern amenities you could need such as air-conditioning and Wi-Fi, alongside stunning antiques and even an old millstone once used for producing olive oil. The spacious home oozes character and rustic charm making it a lovely place to enjoy an authentic Umbrian holiday.
Stepping outside of the villa you will find beautiful gardens where you can eat alfresco, enjoying the views of the Tiber valley down to the river. There is also a lovely pool for your party to cool off on a hot day.
The villa is located in a semi-rural area, yet is set within a charming historic village, meaning you can enjoy walks in the valley and through the local Roman ruins but still have shops and eateries on your doorstep. There are plenty of restaurants, from pizzerias to traditional family-owned trattorias, just minutes from your door as well as a bar, grocery shop and even a museum.
Outside of the village there is lots to see and do nearby; just ten-minutes away by car is one of the best-loved attractions in the area, the Ocriculum Archeological Park, which contains a wealth of Roman ruins including an amphitheatre, baths and monuments.
If you are happy to drive a little further for a day out then make sure to visit the Cascate Delle Marmore; a beautiful waterfall which is actually man made, constructed by early Romans. It takes 40-minutes to drive there from the villa and you can go and simply enjoy the views or try water sports such as kayaking and rafting.
The house is also located around half an hour from the towns Narni and Terni and around an hour’s drive from Orvieto and of course Rome, Italy’s capital where you can see famous sites such as The Colosseum and The Trevi Fountain!

Location
About the surrounding area of Torre La MarmoraTorre La Marmora is located in an idyllic hillside village overlooking the Tiber Valley. Though surrounded by rolling Umbrian countryside there are plenty of nearby towns and cities to explore and amenities on your doorstep.
The villa is close to the preserved old town walls which encase the shops, restaurants and winding streets of the village. You will find everything you need in walking distance from the house as well as a number of attractions to visit including a museum, castle ruins, and some beautiful places of worship including a 7th century church.
Just ten minutes away by car is Ocriculum Archaeological Park, which is a great place to visit as a family. Here you will find extensive excavated Roman ruins near to the Flaminia road which is one of the world’s first roads and spanned all the way to Rome. This area is nice for a walk or a bike ride as it is leads down to paths along the banks of River Tiber.
There are many lovely towns and villages dotted around the nearby hills: Narni is just 20-minute drive away, the village has a rather unique attraction called Narni Sotteranea which is a recently uncovered underground town with a church covered in 13th century frescoes, a courtroom and a jail cell.
Terni which is 35-minutes away by car is a bustling town, here you will find Roman and medieval architecture sitting side by side with industrial 19th century buildings and modern attractions. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is a popular place to visit when in town. If you want to explore some of the natural beauty spots near Terni then try the lake Lago di Piediluco and Cascate Delle Marmore waterfall - both are stunning.
One more place you won’t want to miss is Orvieto. Though 50-minutes away from the villa, it is worth the trip. This small city is perched on top of volcanic rock and is made up of an old town and a new town. Travel by funicular up to the strikingly beautiful old town and enjoy the views from the top of the hill. Orvieto is also well-known for its white wine and there are some lovely bars and restaurants in the squares of the old town where you can sip a glass and unwind.
If you want to visit the capital city of Rome, then you are well-placed to do so as the villa is located close to the border with Lazio. As well as housing the capital, the ancient region has many other sites to explore and many of Italy’s most famous pasta dishes can be found in this area!
Many places in Lazio are within easy reach of the villa and Rome itself is just an hour’s drive away. It is worth setting off early to make the most of your day in the capital as there is so much to see. Taking part in a walking tour or purchasing a Rome city pass to skip the queues to the top attractions will help you to fit everything in.

Kids
Best Suited For: TeensUmbria is a fantastic place to visit with children; there is endless wide-open space in the country to explore and run around and there are many towns to visit as a family.
If you plan to visit the waterfalls at Cascate Delle Marmore which is 40-minutes away by car, this is an ideal day out for those with older children. There are a number of walking routes which take you to the falls and a few of these are easier and more suitable for children. Along the trails to the waterfalls there are lots of hills and caves to play in and kids will love the magical landscape. There is even a walk guided by an elf especially designed for children. Once you reach the water there are water sports and activities for different ages and abilities from soft rafting to kayaking and climbing.
Another interesting place to take the kids is Giardino di Bomarzo, also known as the park of monsters. This park is 25 minutes away from the villa and is a sculpture park filled with huge sculptures and monuments, many of which are quite strange and funny which children will appreciate. The park, which has been used as a set in many films, is a good place for a picnic and to let the kids let off some steam.

Incredible!
Incredible ‘villa’ doesn’t cover it. Clearly several centuries old , visited by Popes and royalty in the past. Huge rooms, grand high ceilings at least 5m high upstairs, kitchen has the original olive press and grind stone . Gardens idyllic , orange trees laden with fruit throughout, lovely pool, and seating area outside perfect. BBQ and hammocks. Views from the villa are of beautiful countryside.
Otricoli is a delightful, old village, lots of history. gelateria delicious, great butchers, grocers and small weekly market. Il forno is the bakery, go early for best bread. Teeny, twisty cobbled streets, slow pace of life. Friendly.
There is a large outdoor municipal pool 1.5k outside: we didn’t go but empty when we ran past it.
Perfect distance from Rome: 1hr 10min easy driving.
Otricoli streets are super narrow: beware if your car is wide and park near villa (<2 mins walk is a free car park) -
A very special place to stay!
Torre la Marmora is a very special place to stay full of history and Otricoli is such a beautiful small hill top town. We really enjoyed the garden and pool as well as the local bar with stunning views and returned a number of times to Ristorante Le Delizie for pizza and pasta. Bella from Oliver's Travels helped everything go smoothly and the person we met at the villa was really helpful about the local area and places to visit. We were a family 5 which this catered for easily. Many thanks.

Everything we could need for a relaxing stay. Just had our first swim in the pool whilst the sun is shining. Today is the Festival of Flowers which is very special.

A lovely time!
We have had a lovely time staying in Torre la Marmora. Otricoli is such a beautiful town and we have enjoyed lovely food and amazing hospitality in Ristorante Le Delizie, Bar Degli Archi and Osteria i sapori del mare. We have had such an amazing time exploring areas such as Orvieto, Assisi, Rome and Orte. It has been so lovely relaxing by the pool and enjoying BBQs on the beautiful terrace. Thank you so much!

A great holiday
What a great start to the new holiday season! All 7 of us enjoyed our stay and visited amazing places near and as day trips. Rome by rail was easier than by car and blew our socks away. Assisi was well worth the drive with some beautiful viewpoints. The Marmore Falls, Orte were great half day trips. But, it has to be said that Otricoli was star of the show. What a friendy place this is. Restaurants are recommended. The tavern during festival week could not have been any more traditional Italian! Oh let's not forget the views from the coffee shop or the bakery all worth it. Our thanks to the owners. No problem at all with the Torre and any minors were dealt with swiftly. Lovely to sit out and enjoy a BBQ or a late afternoon lunch with an Aperol.

Excellent
Torre is an experience of ancient Italy in a very pretty hill town. Excellent and lovely hostess. Even better than your website. A medieval tower small Palazzo.

Stunning views
House is wonderful - so much character. Otricoli is a beautiful village & so peaceful. I have loved relaxing in the garden and looking at the stunning views. A walk to the archaeological site and being amongst the remains of the ampitheatre, Roman baths etc was a real highspot.

Great
Great week, couldn't believe such a spacious house & huge garden. I've loved early (ish) morning runs down to the river. Walks around the archaeological site & along the river. Gorgeous Italian landscapes. Pool cold and so refreshing. Great speaking Italian, locals very patient with our efforts.

Delightfully attentive owner
Torre La Marmora - a house of mysteries. Doors, history, a landscape which is part of the house heritage. A garden of discoveries. Is the home a 'tower' or a farmhouse? Or a palazzo from a bygone age (300 yrs+). The owner is a delightfully attentive hostess and it was lovely to meet the charming Enrico nearby. We loved the hill tows and walking along the ruins by the Tiber - huge Roman baths structures. And walking the hill towns. We were introduced to the biggest bridge of its day (Augustus) 30m high. Actually - could have just lazed, swam, hammock, ping pong all week here in this fabulous house. There are three universe sculptures and I did not realise at first...
-
Fabulous time
We have had such a fabulous time here! The home is amazing. We felt like royalty (except without maids!). The host was fantastic! I felt we could contact her with any queries. Otricoli is a beautiful village. Great restaurants, beautiful scenery. The pool is lovely. Beautifully clean. Sad to say goodbye.

So peaceful
We have loved it here... the house is so beautiful, full of time and charm. Is there a history of it - I'd love to know it's past. I wish I could stay a year and see it, and the village through the seasons... It is so peaceful here, and the garden and the birds are real food for the soul. We have been truly blessed to stay here. You have been so very helpful and kind to us even before we arrived. Not many agents would be so caring and diligent. Thank you so much for that, and for all the work that goes on behind the scenes.
-
Idyllic
We've had an absolutely lovely time here - the house is absolutely amazing! It's been like staying in a dream!! Otricoli is also a fantastic little village, and we've had so much fun exploring it! We spent most of our evenings sat outside at the table with a cool drink, and it was totally and completely idyllic. Our hosts have been incredible, and made sure we had all the info we needed, and checked in to see how we were doing. This has been an incredible experience - & we can't praise it more!
-
Wonderful time
We've had such a wonderful time, enjoying the house, pool & Otricoli. We've had some really lovely food and wine and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thanks so much
-
Marvellous
It was a marvellous stay in this amazing medieval tower and most of all, in this wonderful garden! The host was great, very attentive and confident to lend us her keys. We took great care of her house and we enjoyed every moment here. The region nearby is full of beauties, such as Villa d'Este, Villa Adriana, the Duomo of Orvieto, Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto and the Caracalla baths in Rome. Thank you very much
-
Loved every minute
We loved every minute of our stay in the medieval Torre. We felt like a royal family, loved all the places you can play hide & seek. The view is absolutely wonderful. The pool is a great place to have fun. The host and her family were helpful and kind. We enjoyed our family holiday after a crazy year to the max!

Gorgeous
A gorgeous villa in a magnificent region. We had a great time grilling by the pool in the morning and chilling in the living room the afternoon. The city is very nice and the people are the kindest. Villa D'Este blew our mind and is now our standard for gardens. Grazie mille.
