Location
About the surrounding area of Apartment AriaThe city of Venice is every bit as enchanting as its reputation suggests. The variety of incredible sights and experiences it packs in gives you plenty of choice when it comes to planning your trip.
Right at the top of the highlights list has to be the grand Palazzo Ducale, otherwise known as the Doge’s Palace. As opulent inside as out, you can visit the Doge’s private apartments and chambers as well as the best-known part of the palace, the Bridge of Sighs. This is a more pleasant experience than it once was. Back in the day, a trip across the bridge usually meant you were on your way to the prison cells.
The unmissable Basilica San Marco is another must. The focal point of the Piazza San Marco, this stunning cathedral is dedicated to the city’s patron saint and contains a variety of art treasures, statues, mosaics and golden horses among them. The square on which it stands is the de facto meeting place for Venetians and features the National Archaeological Museum, which was one of the world’s first public museums, having opened in 1596. In addition to Roman artefacts, you can see Egyptian mummies and Greek sculptures here.
You will also notice the Campanile San Marco bell tower on the square, which offers a wonderful, far-reaching view if you take a trip in the lift to the top. Despite appearances, this elegant structure has only been on the square since the early 20th century – after the 12th century original collapsed.
Art lovers will be in their element at the huge Gallerie dell’Accademia, which takes you on a chronologically themed tour of Venetian art through the ages. Some pieces – and there are more than 500 in the museum’s collection – date back as far as the 13th century.
A notable collection of contemporary art is also not far away. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection, housed in a canal-side villa, offers European and American works including pieces by Kandinsky and Pollock. Across the water, Palazzo Grassi showcases an array of thought-provoking modern art and photography in regularly refreshed exhibitions.
Another of the city’s cultural gems, the Teatro La Fenice opera house is one of the grandest you’ll find, and has hosted the premieres of many of the genre’s best-known works, including La Traviata and La Bohème. Theatre lovers will lap up the guided tours detailing its eventful past, while tickets to performances are similarly sought after. It’s advisable to book yours well in advance.
It’s not history and high art in Venice, however. A visit to Lido island is great for sunning yourself on the beach, and it will only take about 20 minutes to get there if you hop on a vaporetto. These water buses are a more reasonably priced alternative to a gondola ride and will give you a great tour of the sights en route. Another island worth the trip is Murano, where the Murano Glass Factory offers glass blowing demonstrations and guided tours.

Region
Venice, a captivating city situated in the northeastern part of Italy, is a place like no other. Often referred to as the "City of Canals," Venice is renowned for its unique and mesmerising beauty. Built on a network of one-hundred-and-eighteen small islands connected by a labyrinth of canals, this enchanting city offers an array of attractions and experiences that make it a must-visit destination for travellers from around the world.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesA great family destination, Venice has plenty to amuse and inspire younger visitors. Start by showing them the iconic landmarks like Rialto Bridge, the most famous of the four which cross the Grand Canal. Just a short stroll from St Mark’s Square, it’s packed with souvenir shops and usually tourists too, but come early and you might just miss the crowds. You could also pay a visit to the nearby Rialto Market, a fixture of Venetian life for more than 700 years.
Rialto serves as a stop for the water buses so it’s a convenient place to start your adventures and get your bearings with a trip around the canal. There’s quite a bit to spot along the way, with boats doubling up as grocery stores, delivery vans, refuse trucks and more. They could also look out for the winged lions which adorn many a building – the symbol of the city’s patron saint, St Mark.
The Piazza San Marco is the place to be for many of the city’s main attractions, including the Basilica San Marco, National Archaeological Museum and the Doge’s Palace. If these don’t appeal to your kids, they might enjoy climbing the towering Campanile San Marco – the view that awaits them from the top of this 100m-high structure (the tallest in town) is certainly rewarding. A grand waterside square, Piazza San Marco is a must, and it’s worth rising early to get there before it’s too busy.
Next, hop on the vaporetto and visit pretty Murano island, where you can take a family-friendly tour of the glass factory. Kids can get involved in artistic activities and see molten glass being turned into all sorts of beautiful items. Another local craft speciality is mask making, as seen during the city’s Carnevale. Look out for shops where you can see the makers at work, as some hold classes where kids can learn to design their own masks.
There are plenty of places to grab a gelato in Venice, and a stroll down the waterfront with a scoop or two is one of the city’s simple pleasures. If you want to take a breather from the busy areas, it’s worth knowing about Giardino Papadolpoli. With a children’s playground and seating, it’s a nice, shaded space at the intersection of the Grand Canal and Rio Novo. The Giardini Reali garden on the waterfront near St Mark’s Square, is an alternative spot for a quick break.
