Location
About the surrounding area of Apartment BellaVenice is full of attractions offering a taste of the city’s history, with many of the best-known sights within a short walk of each other. On the Piazza del Marco you will find the Basilica San Marco – reason enough to start your explorations on this iconic square. This ornate cathedral features an impressive marble staircase, gold mosaics and beautiful frescos, while the domes are decorated with incredible Byzantine works of art. If you don’t fancy queueing, private guided tours of the cathedral are available to book.
In front of the Basilica San Marco, the Campanile San Marco is also well worth stopping for. At a height of almost 100m, this is the tallest structure in the city, so there is nowhere better to appreciate the view across the Venetian Lagoon. Indeed, the original tower was built as a watchtower to monitor ships entering the city’s waters.
Also on the Piazza del Marco is the National Archaeological Museum, a large collection which was one of the first public museums in the world. Be sure not to miss the nearby Doge’s Palace. Otherwise known as Palazzo Ducale, this grand palace is an opulent building with a rich and varied history. Look out for the Bridge of Sighs which connects the palace to what were once prison cells –a walk across this bridge was not good news, hence the ‘sighs’ of the condemned who crossed it.
Art plays a big part in the city’s cultural offering. While you will find an array of impressive works in its heritage buildings, there are also several galleries dedicated to classic or contemporary art. Look out for the comprehensive Gallerie dell’Accademia, offering a chronological art journey up to the 19th century. From here, it’s a short walk to the popular Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which showcases more contemporary works curated by the late American collector.
To appreciate what the other islands have to offer, grab a vaporetto waterbus – these convenient craft stop at various points along the Grand Canal, including the Rialto Bridge. Beautiful Burano is recommended and known for its leaning bell tower which, while not quite as awesome as Pisa, makes for an interesting landmark. The island is also the home of lace making, and hosts a lace museum, Museo del Merletto.
Larger and closer to central Venice, Murano is the glass making centre of the region, and many of the factories offer tours and activities on this theme. For beach life, head to Lido which has its own claim to fame – this island is where the Venice Film Festival takes place each summer. You might also like to check out Giudecca. A short distance across the water, the island offers a quieter, authentic Venetian experience and a great view back to San Marco.

Region
Venice, a captivating city situated in the northeastern part of Italy, is a place like no other. Often referred to as the "City of Canals," Venice is renowned for its unique and mesmerising beauty. Built on a network of one-hundred-and-eighteen small islands connected by a labyrinth of canals, this enchanting city offers an array of attractions and experiences that make it a must-visit destination for travellers from around the world.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesAll the family will appreciate Venice’s unique atmosphere, with plenty of exciting adventures for the kids. From the water, you’ll get a view of the city that’s like no other. Jump on the waterbus to circle the island – it’s the best way to get around and delivers spectacular sights along the way. Of course, there is always the possibility of taking a gondola ride too, a particularly special experience in the evenings.
If they want to hit the beach, it’s Lido that needs to be on your list. This island is not far from central Venice and has a variety of beaches – some have facilities like loungers and restaurants, some are quiet and out of the way. With around 11km of beaches in total, there’s lots of choice. The island also has an airport from where you can take helicopter rides. As a quieter, more residential island, Lido should let you escape the crowds if the kids need calming.
Every February, Venice hosts Carnevale, a huge festival which turns the streets into a true spectacle. If you’re not around for that, you can still get a flavour of it by visiting a mask maker. Masks are a big part of the Carnevale costume, and kids can design and make their own at mask makers’ shops around the city.
Alternatively, they could try a bit of glass blowing if you take a waterbus ride over to Murano – home of numerous glass factories making colourful, intricate glassware. This island is also fun to visit to see the many colourful houses that line the waterside.
Back in the centre of Venice, you could climb up the towering Campanile San Marco for a bird’s eye view of the region. There is an entry fee for this iconic belltower but the views from the top are certainly stunning – and you can take the lift if you don’t fancy climbing 100m up.
St Mark’s Square is a photogenic landmark in its own right, and home to numerous museums and heritage buildings. If your kids are into history, it’s worth buying an all-in-one ticket to gain entry to Doge’s Palace, the National Archaeological Museum and the Correr Civic Museum. Bookworms will also get a kick out of the one-of-a-kind Libreria Acqua Alta, a quirky second-hand bookstore with a gondola at its centre and bathtubs filled with books – to keep them away from recurring floods.
