Location
About the surrounding area of Apartment EmiliaFrom the historic sights of Piazza San Marco to the beaches of Lido di Venezia, the city of Venice offers unforgettable experiences. With easy connections provided by the many waterbuses, you can easily explore the city centre attractions and the quieter islands which lie across the water.
Everyone’s favourite meeting place, Piazza San Marco is central to everyday life in Venice. You will want to visit it early in your stay as it has an array of attractions vying for your attention. The grand Palazzo Ducale is a superb place to start. Also known as Doge’s Palace, it has previously served as a fortress, prison and as the city’s administrative centre. A mix of architectural styles are on display, along with notable artworks from the likes of Titian and Bellini.
The white stone Bridge of Sighs is attached to the palace, once forming the route to the prison cells. You can visit these, along with the Doge’s apartments, armoury and other areas of the building on a guided tour.
You can also skip the queues of the nearby Basilica San Marco, the city’s outstanding domed cathedral. Known as the Chiesa d’Oro, or Golden Church, the basilica features gold-leaf mosaics and the incredible sculptures of the Horses of St Mark, among many more notable works of art. In front of the cathedral, the Campanile San Marco bell tower is even taller. The view from the top, if you choose to climb it, is breath-taking.
The city offers numerous galleries showcasing classic and contemporary art. At the Gallerie dell’Accademia, you will find more than 500 pieces chronologically arranged in 24 halls, with the most recent works from the 19th century. Modern art can be found in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, a 5-minute walk away, and the galleries of Punta Della Dogana and Palazzo Grassi which hosts temporary exhibitions from leading contemporary artists.
Venice’s centre is filled with maze-like, narrow streets filled with shops, cafés and restaurants. While this area can get busy, just across the canal is the quieter island of Giudecca. This is the place to for peaceful walks along the waterside and a taste of the real Venice. The view back to San Marco is wonderful, and it only takes about four minutes to reach an isle that many visitors overlook.
If you fancy further island excursions, you can head out to Lido, where the area’s favourite beaches are found. Whether you want a beach club experience with loungers, drinks, dining and the rest, or just a quiet spot among the sand dunes, you will find it here. Come in summer and you might even spot a movie star or two as this is where the Venice Film Festival happens each year. Alternatively, try Murano, one of the largest islands of the Venetian lagoon, famed for glass making and its eye-catching, colourful houses.

Region
Venice, a captivating city situated in the northeastern part of Italy, is a place like no other. Often referred to as the "City of Canals," Venice is renowned for its unique and mesmerising beauty. Built on a network of one-hundred-and-eighteen small islands connected by a labyrinth of canals, this enchanting city offers an array of attractions and experiences that make it a must-visit destination for travellers from around the world.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesIdeal for a family holiday, Venice welcomes young visitors with open arms. It’s an easy city to get lost in, but that’s half the fun. You can get your bearings more easily by taking a circuit of the island on a vaporetto. These ubiquitous waterbuses will take you all over the place and are a necessity if you want to get to the Lido beaches or other islands, so you might want to invest in a multi-day pass.
While the waterbuses offer a very scenic ride, you might want to do something extra special and book a gondola. As perhaps the Venetian visitor experience, gondola rides don’t come cheap (and are more expensive still in the evenings) but would you really want to miss out? Even if you don’t take to the water, the bustling scene along the Grand Canal is quite a spectacle for the kids. Head for the Rialto Bridge to seek out souvenirs and great photo ops.
At 98.6m high, the Campanile San Marco offers the best vantage point in town, and kids will love the views, if not the climb (but fear not, there is a lift). You’ll find this handsome belltower on St Mark’s Square, just in front of the Basilica San Marco.
This area may be tourist central, but they come with good reason – this huge square is just steps away from the canal and is filled with countless buildings of historic significance. You’ll find the Doge’s Palace here, complete with the famous Bridge of Sighs, along with museums like the Correr Civic Museum, where the kids can see ‘Bigfoot’ and even some Egyptian mummies.
For a day at the beach, take a ride to Lido. This island acts as a barrier between Venice and the Adriatic, boasting beautiful views from its many kilometres of golden sand. There are plenty of beachside restaurants and places to grab a gelato, and a day on Lido makes for a pleasant change of pace.
If you’re looking for a quieter spot in the city centre, head towards Santa Lucia train station. Nearby, you’ll find the pretty waterside park, Giardino Papadolpoli. Venice doesn’t have many green spaces, so this one is a find – complete with a playground and lots of seating in the shade.
Venice has lots of museums, but one you can be sure young children will enjoy is the quirky Creature di Gomma, with its vast collection of vintage toys. Covering characters from Popeye to Tom and Jerry, Yogi Bear and the Flintstones, this den of 20th-century nostalgia will likely get the approval of parents too.
