Recommended City Homes & Apartments Ideal for Kids Walk to Village Romantic

Perfectly placed in the centre of Venice, this beautiful canal-view apartment puts you minutes away from St Mark’s Square. With two bedrooms, your apartment is situated on the third floor of the building, looking out on the glorious San Zulian and Bareteri canals.

This elegant apartment, situated on the border of the San Marco and Castella districts, makes it easy to explore the best of the city. A few minutes’ stroll from the Rialto Bridge and an array of shops and restaurants, you will feel the Venetian vibe as soon as you step outside. The lovely church of Santa Maria Della Fava is also just steps away.

Opulent interiors give this city apartment plenty of character. Your main living space includes a kitchenette and dining area with wooden flooring, overhead beams, plush soft furnishings and exposed brickwork. The sofa-bed in this space allows for a fifth guest to enjoy a stay in Venice.

The two double bedrooms each enjoy a fine view out to the canal, one with a view of the bridges crossing the Rio dei Bareteri, otherwise known as the Canal of the Capmakers. A gorgeous bathroom with marbled walls and a large, walk-in shower is shared by both rooms.

The apartment is equipped with TV, Wi-Fi and air conditioning. You can also make use of the building’s communal laundry facilities. Other useful amenities nearby include several supermarkets, a wine shop and greengrocer’s stall at Campo Santa Maria Formosa.

In less than five minutes you can wander to the Rialto Bridge and catch a vaporetto, or waterbus, to wherever you wish to explore – although many of the best-known sights are within easy walking distance, among them the Palazzo Ducale, or Doge’s Palace, and the Basilica di San Marco. You might also like to visit the Lido beaches or other islands such as colourful Burano or Murano, home of the Museo del Vetro glass museum.

There is a lot to see and do in Venice, so it’s worth planning what you want to visit and when to get the most out of your stay. Many of the most popular sights are within walking distance of each other in the centre, but it’s easy to make use of the water bus service and head to quieter spots when you want to.

If you’re after some time on the beach, make the crossing to Lido, an island with a lengthy stretch of sand, as well as pretty canals and a host of bars and restaurants. The beaches at Alberoni to the south are perhaps the nicest. It’s on Lido that the Venice Film Festival takes place each summer – this important event of the cinematic calendar has been a fixture on the island since 1932.

Another island just a short hop away is Murano, the home of Venetian glass making, while lace making is the craft that Burano is best known for. The brightly hued houses that line the canals of these islands make for a great photo opportunity – residents being instructed to paint their homes every few years in a specific shade. It is said that the vibrant colours were originally a navigation aid to help sailors see in foggy conditions.

Back in the city centre, you have numerous choices around St Mark’s Square. The Doge’s Palace, otherwise known as Palazzo Ducale, is just one of the square’s grand sights and once served as the city’s administrative centre. The famous Bridge of Sighs is attached to the palace, originally a walkway to the adjacent prison cells. You will also find notable works of art from Tintoretto, Carpaccio and others.

Nearby, the Basilica San Marco is an epic cathedral with endless mosaics, carvings and intricate architectural features, and is top of many people’s to-do list. If the queues put you off, it is possible to book private tours of this largely golden church.

Also on the Piazza San Marco is the National Archaeological Museum. One of the world’s first public museums, this vast collection introduces you to centuries of artefacts, even including Egyptian mummies. The tallest building on the square is the Campanile San Marco bell tower. For a fee, you can climb it and enjoy the best view in the city.

Four bridges now cross Venice’s Grand Canal, but the original and most recognisable is the Rialto Bridge. Only a few minutes from St Mark’s Square, this landmark is another must-see; the route from one to the other a characterful maze of streets lined with shops, bars and restaurants.

Venice’s cultural scene offers numerous galleries showcasing classic and contemporary art. For the former, head for Gallerie dell’Accademia, across the bridge which shares its name. Here you will find more than 500 pieces of art in 24 halls, the most recent works from the 19th century. More modern art can be found in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, a 5-minute walk away. Tours are available to guide you through what has become one of the most important collections of its kind.

Region

Venice, a captivating city situated in the northeastern part of Italy, is a place like no other. Often referred to as the "City of Canals," Venice is renowned for its unique and mesmerising beauty. Built on a network of one-hundred-and-eighteen small islands connected by a labyrinth of canals, this enchanting city offers an array of attractions and experiences that make it a must-visit destination for travellers from around the world.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Venice is just as good for kids as for adults and is sure to provide lots of memorable experiences. A trip around the canals is bound to be exciting for younger children – the famous gondolas can take up to six people, which will make the quite hefty prices seem a bit more reasonable. For general getting around, the vaporetto water bus is a necessity, but it provides a very scenic ride, particularly if your kids can grab a window seat.

There are more great views to be had at the top of the Campanile San Marco. Nearly 100m high, this mighty bell tower in St Mark’s Square does have a lift, but climbing it on foot is, arguably, more fun. The panoramic view is stunning, with the tower originally built so watchmen could see ships entering the city’s waters.

If the kids are into history, there are lots of heavyweight attractions in this area – Basilica San Marco, Doge’s Palace, the National Archaeological Museum and Correr Civic Museum among them. While the Basilica San Marco is free to enter (if you’re prepared to wait in line), the others charge an entrance fee – but combi-tickets allowing entry to all the museums of Piazza San Marco are available.

For a different sort of museum that the whole family will love, check out the vintage toys of Creature di Gomma. This impressive collection is packed with 20th-century playthings, many of them based on TV and cartoon characters. You’ll find everything from Disney to Transformers and Yogi Bear all in one place.

Fancy a day at the beach? It’s a 20-minute waterbus ride to Lido, where you can find the Venetian Lagoon’s most extensive stretch of sand. The beaches to the south tend to be quieter – you will also find a hiking route out into the sea, ending at the exposed Alberoni lighthouse.

Every February, Venice hosts its grand Carnevale, a huge festival which turns the streets into a true spectacle. Masks are a big part of the Carnevale costume, and kids can design and make their own at mask makers’ shops around the city. Another fun activity is the glass blowing on offer at the Murano glass factory – you will see colourful glass souvenirs for sale all over Venice, but this island is where they are made.

One thing Venice is quite short of is parks, so when you find a green space, take the opportunity to have a break in the shade. Giardino Papadolpoli is one of the few in the city centre, not far from Santa Lucia train station. Small but well maintained, this landscaped park offers a playground and benches to rest on – and as it’s flanked by canals, you can be back on the water in no time.

Reviews

  • Perfectly situated, stylish luxury apartment in Venice

    on 27/09/2024

We were delighted with this apartment. The location is amazing (5 minutes walk in one direction to the Rialto Bridge and 5 minutes to St Marks Square in the other direction). We really enjoyed feeling part of the area, by staying in our own apartment rather than a hotel. The photos do not do this apartment justice ... it is beautifully finished and was spotlessly clean and the block it is situated in is both historic and beautiful decorated inside. It may be small but it literally has everything you could want (including aircon). We loved our time here! Thanks also to Amir who met us, carried our suitcases up the 3 flights of stairs and sent us many great suggestions and some fantastic local restaurant recommendations. In summary, perfect for a short stay in Venice!
