Smaller, more casual, and much less crowded than the larger main island of Malta, Gozo is the perfect place to get away. And perhaps the best way to explore the island is on a guided ATV tour. These tours make all the stops to visit some of the island’s best sights, including the salt pans, Sanap Cliffs, Inland Sea, Tal-Mixta Cave, and more). So, if you’d like to come to terms with the island quickly so that you can spend the rest of your time on the beach, this is the activity for you.

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular attractions in Malta and is only a short boat ride from Gozo. There’s an inexpensive ferry that leaves from Gozo, and some of these trips include visits to the caves on Comino. You can also take private tours of either 3 hours or up to 7 hours, which include food and drinks.

Wied Il-Ghasri (15-minute drive) is perhaps the most unique swimming spot you’ll ever find. Situated in a winding gorge between orange cliff faces, the vivid green water reached by a safe rock staircase is picturesque and perfect for a dip.

If you’re looking to partake in some water sports, Hondoq Ir-Rummien Beach (30-minute drive) is the place to be. It’s a small, sandy beach with amazing turquoise waters and Joyride Watersports – where you can rent canoes, kayaks, jet skis and many other fun water-based toys.

History buffs will be interested in exploring the medieval citadel in Victoria (a 9-minute drive). The first fortifications in the hill at Victoria date back to 1500 BC, while the current structure dates back to the 1600s. The citadel boasts an Old Prison, The Battery, and Old Grain Silos, all with great views of the island.

Wine lovers will be keen to check out the nearby Tal-Massar Winery (3-minute drive). This beautiful vineyard crafts various wines and offers a fantastic tasting session for visitors.

Region

Experience the diverse coastline, rich history and stunning landscapes of this beautiful island, often referred to as the quieter little sister of Malta. Gozo is reached by ferry from Cirkewwa, the northernmost point of Malta, or from Valletta’s port on a highspeed ferry service to Mgarr.

Although Gozo is a small island, there is so much to see and do whether you are seeking sunny beaches and snorkelling spots or hoping to learn about Gozo’s cultural heritage and rich history. The gastronomic scene will also excite you with a wealth of delicious local products. Try the traditional ftira usually baked in a wood-fired oven, served with Gozitan cheese or anchovies, possibly accompanied by a glass of wine produced from vines by the sea or craft beer inspired by the island.

Crystal-clear water will draw you to Gozo’s array of beaches from the wild yet popular Ramla Bay, so loved for its red-hued sand and natural surroundings, to the remote gorge at Wied il-Ghasri reached via a staircase cut into the cliffs. What’s more, the island attracts divers from across the world who come to experience some of Europe’s finest diving sites.

Outdoor adventurists will adore the range of cycling and biking trails, walking paths, horse-riding opportunities and watersports. Meanwhile, boat trips allow you to appreciate Gozo from a different point of view and visit yet more spectacular attractions including the little island of Comino and its Blue Lagoon.

Step back in time as you explore the fortified city, Cittadella, with its baroque cathedral and museums, before heading to the pre-historic Ġgantija Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. To soak up yet more culture, spend time in the historic village of Xewkija with its magnificent limestone church and iconic dome.

When planning your luxury getaway on the island, bear in mind that Gozo is a delightful destination to enjoy throughout the seasons. Bask in the mild winter sunshine, hike through the spring flowers, embrace vibrant summer festivities or swim in the warm turquoise sea as autumn gently approaches.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Gozo has a much more relaxed and laid-back vibe than the larger island of Malta, making it the perfect place for families with children. Indeed, many Maltese people own second homes on Gozo to escape the main island’s bustling crowds and construction noise.

The aforementioned Wied Il-Ghasri (a 15-minute drive) is a particularly unique swimming spot. Located at the bottom of a gorge, it might not sound like a great place to take the kids but delve deeper (into the gorge itself), and you’ll find a small, river-stone beach and water that is great for floating and snorkelling. If you’re lucky, the smoothie stand on the cliff will be open, and you can treat yourself to a refreshing beverage.

If the kids love water sports, Hondoq Ir-Rummien Beach (a 30-minute drive) is the place to take them. It’s a small, sandy beach with amazing turquoise waters and Joyride Watersports – here, you can rent canoes, kayaks, jet skis and many other fun water-based toys.

If you’ve got young kids who sometimes need to get their wiggles out in a quality playground, look no further than Qbajjar Playground (15-minute drive). Across the small cove is another, larger playground as well.
