Enjoy the best of both worlds with a stay in exquisite Villa Gozo Gardens, located in the residential district of Ghajnsielem, on the southeast coast of the island on Gozo, set in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. The villa has been loving restored by the grandchildren of the owners of this original family home. They have cleverly combined the best of the past with the present, antique artefacts with modern technology, and old-fashioned comfort with simple luxury, to make this a real home from home holiday destination.

The villa and grounds are built over one thousand square metres, of which seven hundred metres are mature gardens, beautifully tended with an iconic olive tree, the grandmother’s caper bush, and herbs, crops, and flowers, which can be harvested in season. The house itself is built over two storeys of traditional local stone, with five spacious bedrooms in the main villa, accommodating up to ten guests. A separate mini suite in the garden can sleep up to a further four guests. The villa is ideal for a large family holiday, or a friend’s get together, and has also been used for small weddings. The furniture and décor are in keeping with the villa’s history, retaining many of the original features, most notably the impressive stone arch in the entrance hall, sculpted by a local artisan, and the stunning black and white tiles that lead into the heart of the house. There is private off-road parking, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout, flat screen televisions in every room, and air-conditioning charged according to use.

Enter the house through the hexagonal black and white tiled hall, lined with a charming mustard yellow suite of a sofa and two armchairs. Make your way through the rather impressive stone arch into the heart of the home. The living area is a spacious open plan room with French windows leading out onto the garden and grounds. A smart brown leather sofa and two matching armchairs are arranged around coffee tables and a flat screen television. The adjacent cream and brown kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need to cater for your holiday, including a built-in oven and hob, fridge-freezer, and a free-standing preparation island. There is an elegant ten-seater wooden dining table and chairs, the perfect place for a family breakfast or some impressive indoor entertaining.

There are four bedrooms on the ground floor, all of them furnished with queen size beds, that can be divided and made into two twins. All of the bedrooms have cool marble flooring, are dressed in crisp white linens with primary colour highlights, have their own flatscreen televisions, free-standing wardrobes, bedside tables, and comfy chairs, and ensuite white marble walk-in shower rooms with hand basins and WCs. Take the stairs to the first floor where there is a large airy landing, which has been made into a relaxation and reading nook, the ideal spot to wind down and catch up on this year’s best seller. The fifth bedroom is also on this floor, furnished with a queen size bed, wardrobes, bed side tables, flat screen television, ensuite marble shower room, and best of all, panoramic countryside views.

The piece de resistance of this property is its beautifully manicured grounds and gardens, full of mature trees planted and nurtured by the original owners, ready to ripen with fruits for guests to pick in season, including olives from the iconic tree that stands so proudly in the centre. The grounds are home to a large step-entry swimming pool, with an integral children’s pool that overflows into the pool itself. The pool is long enough for a few lengths before breakfast, or before taking in some summer sun on the terrace on one of the comfy loungers surrounding it. Enjoy morning coffee on the soft seating area under the shady pergola, or sip cocktails in the cool evening air in the gorgeous gazebo.

Lose yourself in the secluded garden, and take a walk down the secluded passageway that leads to a room with an indoor hot tub, a small gym, and grandfather’s beautifully restored antique pool table. Here you will also find the sixth bedroom, housed in a mini suite above this room, which has a small kitchenette and living area, and one double bedroom, it can accommodate up to four guests. End your day dining alfresco under the Gozo skies, using some of the produce picked from the garden, served at the outdoor table and count your lucky stars!

Villa Gozo Garden is located in the residential streets of Ghajnsielem, situated in the south east corner of the small island of Gozo, set in the heart of the Maltese Mediterranean Sea. The villa is near to the harbour of Mgarr, where the ferry docks from the main island of Malta. There is no international airport on the island, guests are advised to fly to Malta, take transportation to the northern port, then take the frequent ferry (every 30 mins, 24 hrs a day) to Gozo. The villa is a short taxi drive from the harbour of Mgarr, where the ferry embarks. Within the immediate vicinity of the villa there are lots of supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, cafes, and restaurants, as well as a local bus system that can take you all around the island to the many sights it has to offer.

The island of Gozo is only seven kilometres long, and just over thirteen kilometres wide, so anywhere you want to go is within easy reach, and only a short drive away. There’s something for everyone to do and see on this small island, whether its historical sites, fortifications, ruins, and castles, religious churches, chapels, convents, and monasteries, nature’s trails and treks amongst the natural flora and fauna, city sightseeing and shopping, wining and dining sampling the best of the local homegrown cuisine, or simply sunbathing on of its many golden sandy beaches, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Gozo. The team at Villa Gozo Garden would be happy to help you arrange any activity of sightseeing trip. Nearby Mgarr Harbour is a quaint traditional fishing village, where you can take a walk along the promenade and admire at the yachts, gaze up at the imposing Gothic Lourdes Chapel, and take a moment to contemplate its impressive interior, marvel at the rainbow-coloured mosaics, see the sculpture of the Three Graces, sunbathe on the local Iz-Zewwieqa beach, before downing a sundowner in the famous Gleneagles Bar. Not far away is Fort Chambray, a mid-eighteenth century bastion fort, built by the order of St John.

The coastline of Gozo is populated with an array of golden sandy beaches, many with pre-bookable sun loungers and parasols, crystal clear water, cafes and bars. Most famously the area is noted for its excellent snorkelling and scuba diving, with many dive boats going out to sea to see underwater sights and the myriads of local schools of colourful fish. We can particularly recommend Ramla for being the most family friendly, you can’t beat a day’s snorkelling in Hondoqir-Rummi, an underwater scuba dive at Dwerja Bay is a must, climb the rocks of nearby Mgaar Ix-Xin, go off the beaten track at the secluded Ghasni beach, or simply swim in the crystal clear waters of the Blue Lagoon on Comino.

The island of Gozo dates back to neolithic times, it has been invaded and occupied by the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Sicilians, the French and finally the British, this melting pot of cultures can be seen in its history, architecture and culture. Start your historical education with the Ggantija Temples, one of the world’s oldest free-standing structures, and now a UNESCO and World Heritage Site. Continue with a tour of the capital city, Ir-Rabat, or known locally as Victoria since 1887, renamed in honour of Queen Victoria to celebrate her jubilee. Walk the fortified Bronze age citadel of the city, stop in Independence Square for a browse in the local market and a coffee in a café, pay due penance in the seventeenth century Baroque Grand Basilca of St George, before wandering the old streets full of shops selling delicacies and souvenirs. The city is also known for its collection of museums, theatres, clubs, and opera houses.

After all that sightseeing find peace and tranquillity with a stroll around Villa Rundle Public Gardens, established by the British in 1910. Finally, don’t miss a day out on the nearby island of Comino, take the ferry from Mgaar harbour, swim and snorkel in the beautiful blue lagoon, before exploring the island’s natural habitat, numerous churches, and dining by the sea shore on freshly caught fish.

Region

Experience the diverse coastline, rich history and stunning landscapes of this beautiful island, often referred to as the quieter little sister of Malta. Gozo is reached by ferry from Cirkewwa, the northernmost point of Malta, or from Valletta’s port on a highspeed ferry service to Mgarr.

Although Gozo is a small island, there is so much to see and do whether you are seeking sunny beaches and snorkelling spots or hoping to learn about Gozo’s cultural heritage and rich history. The gastronomic scene will also excite you with a wealth of delicious local products. Try the traditional ftira usually baked in a wood-fired oven, served with Gozitan cheese or anchovies, possibly accompanied by a glass of wine produced from vines by the sea or craft beer inspired by the island.

Crystal-clear water will draw you to Gozo’s array of beaches from the wild yet popular Ramla Bay, so loved for its red-hued sand and natural surroundings, to the remote gorge at Wied il-Ghasri reached via a staircase cut into the cliffs. What’s more, the island attracts divers from across the world who come to experience some of Europe’s finest diving sites.

Outdoor adventurists will adore the range of cycling and biking trails, walking paths, horse-riding opportunities and watersports. Meanwhile, boat trips allow you to appreciate Gozo from a different point of view and visit yet more spectacular attractions including the little island of Comino and its Blue Lagoon.

Step back in time as you explore the fortified city, Cittadella, with its baroque cathedral and museums, before heading to the pre-historic Ġgantija Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. To soak up yet more culture, spend time in the historic village of Xewkija with its magnificent limestone church and iconic dome.

When planning your luxury getaway on the island, bear in mind that Gozo is a delightful destination to enjoy throughout the seasons. Bask in the mild winter sunshine, hike through the spring flowers, embrace vibrant summer festivities or swim in the warm turquoise sea as autumn gently approaches.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

You’ll be spoilt for choice with all of the activities and sights the island of Gozo has to offer for your kids and some fabulous family fun days out. Starting with Villa Gozo Garden, there’s a lovely long swimming pool, with an integral shallow end, where your children can play and splash all day. The villa grounds have seven hundred square metres of gorgeous gardens, which are safely fenced in, the perfect place to let them and their imaginations roam free.

The nearest beach to the villa is at Gorgun, a find sandy beach with easy entry shallow waters. Further afield the most family friendly beaches are, Iz-Zewwieqa, the nearest one just along the coast from the harbour in the south, most notably Ramla beach in the north east with fine sand and pristine waters, and Marsalforn, a tourist resort with long stretches of golden sands in the north of the island. Near Marsalforn is Three Hills Gardens, a play park for children of all ages, with six different themed activity areas, and part of the action plan of the Eco-Gozo project, aimed at planting lots more trees around the island. Also in Marsalforn is the Qbaijar promenade, which has breath taking views over the Mediterranean Sea and Qbaijar watch tower, as well as a children’s play area. Much more stunning is the rock-cut saltpans that protrude into the sea at Qbaijar Bay, reputedly over three hundred and fifty years old, and stretch along three kilometres along the coastline. The salt mining goes back over years of family tradition, and it can be collected, stored and processed in the caves that have been carved into the rocks – your kids will find this fascinating. Children and adults alike will love a tour on the trackless train that takes you from the capital of Victoria in the middle of the island to the village of Xaghra. The tour takes in St Martha’s chapel, the village of Xaghra, the Xewkija Rotunda Church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel, the Ggantija Temples, now a world and UNESCO Heritage site, the Ta’ Kola Windmill, the Villa Rundle Gardens and views over the Citadel of Victoria itself. The delightful Gozo Toy Museum can be found in the village of Xaghra, small and still privately owned, showcasing much loved old toys, including an eighteenth century Maltese doll with a carved wooden head, and a 1930’s Noah’s Ark, not to mention the classic Hornby train set, and Dinky cars, children of all ages will love this visit. Start their discovery of the island’s capital, Victoria, with a stop at the Visitor Centre, which tells the story and history of the city, including the many and varied occupiers, brave knights, and bloody battles. Then go forth and find all of these sights in the citadella itself, including cathedrals, law court, the old prison, the Nature Museum, the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, and the Gran Castello Historic House. After all that sightseeing end the day in one of the many family-friendly restaurants and discover the delights of the local Maltese cuisine.

Your children will love to spend some time in the Villa Rundle Garden in Victoria, a nature themed venue with a play area, hosting kid-centric activities, and an opportunity to discover the local flora and fauna. For your more adventurous offspring, the island has lots of organised and supervised physical activities to keep them amused, including kayaking, biking, hiking and climbing, abseiling, water sports, and scuba diving, something for all age groups and interests. No visit to Gozo is complete without a day to the neighbouring island of Comino, take the ferry from the nearby Mgarr Harbour to the Blue Lagoon, and have a lazy day by the seashore, swimming and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters, before discovering the hidden treasures and wild nature this tiny island has to offer.

Owner Profile

Property owners
Noel and Nadia Vella

How long have you owned the property?
We have owned the property for 4 years. Previously, it belonged to Noel’s grandparents – it was their residence.

What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
Given that this was the home of Noel’s grandparents, for Noel, it was his second home. He grew up in the property, and spent most of his weekends as a child living in with his grandparents, Nanna Benna and Nannu Toni, helping them around the house and in their business. The villa is the residential part of the whole premises which way back, included Gozo’s first wedding hall and a local tea shop. Noel’s grandparents had emigrated to Australia in the 1950’s and upon coming back, they purchased the land and built their own home and business on the same site.

Are there any interesting stories in its history?
The property has a very rich history. In fact, today’s Room 1, in the past, served as a photography set for the newlyweds who celebrated their wedding in the wedding hall. At the time, in the 70’s and 80’s, the hall was the only one of its kind in Gozo, and plenty of functions would take place including also baptisms, parties, dinners and events. Nannu Toni’s kitchen was very popular with Maltese horse racing enthusiasts, who would cross over from Malta on Sundays during summer, to assist to the traditional horse races held as part of the various village festas – a tradition which is still alive today. The hall would welcome these enthusiasts, who would feast on Nannu Toni’s famous rabbit pasta and stew (the traditional ‘fenkata’), and some of these enthusiasts, even found a holiday home in three quaint apartments which were housed in the garden of Nannu and Nanna’s house. These apartments were already since the 70’s, being rented out as self-catering holiday units. Today, two of these apartments house Room 6, and the gym, hot tub and billiard table. The billiard table in fact, was purchased by Nannu Toni for his tea shop, and we have today lovingly restored it to its former glory. Guests can also play using the original billiard balls and cue sticks. Noel thus grew up immersed in the service industry. Today we have totally transformed the property into this high-end holiday villa which is perfect for families and small groups, offering guests modern day comfort, luxurious furnishings and finishings, and the same warm welcome with which Nanna Benna and Nannu Toni used to greet their many many guests over time.

Do you have a favourite room in the property?
This is a very hard question! In reality, people of all ages can find a favourite spot in the villa. For example, Noel’s favourite room is the living room, as this offers a perfect view of the lovely garden, which reminds him of his grandparents at their best, when they were still cultivating their vast garden. Nadia’s favourite spot is actually the garden, as she has taken it upon herself to honor Nanna’s memory by restoring the garden to its former glory. Vanessa and Jan, our children, absolutely love the gym area, the hot tub and the billiard table, and spend hours trying to beat each other at a game of pool.

For anyone coming to stay is there anything in the surrounding area they should...

Really do?

The beach at ix-Xatt l-Ahmar is ideal for a summer dip, and it is actually quite close to the property.

Really eat?
Fresh bread from the bakery which is found round the corner from the property, and pickled olives and capers from our very own trees and bushes at the Villa.

Really see?
The village square in Ghajnsielem and the magnificent church dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto with its imposing bell tower.

What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
The property is very peaceful. The garden truly provides an oasis of relaxation. Early in the morning and early in the evening, the birds inhabiting the numerous trees in the garden, start chirping happily away. Their song evokes peace, tranquility and well-being. It is a must that one goes out in the garden with a cup of tea or coffee, and just sit there, listening to the birdsong, and observing the landscape dominated by Ta` Kenuna medieval tower, watching it light up for the night.

  • Lovely villa and thoughtful owners

    on 18/03/2024

Very lovely and comfortable villa. I would like to point out the spacious bedrooms, all ensuite, and the very spacious garden, which makes the villa ideal for families with children. Although the property is in the middle of the village, very close to local amenities and also to the harbour, its layout guarantees complete privacy.

A very special mention to the owners, who were very helpful and thoughtful and made our stay just perfect and made us feel very welcome.

  • Excellent on all Counts- would recommend!

The villa was fabulous, spacious, well appointed and in a great position to explore the island. The bedrooms are spacious, beds super comfortable, plenty of seating, a well equipped kitchen, great jacuzzi and we loved the firepit which we used on a cooler evening.
The villa is in an urban street but we found it to be both private and quiet. Bus stops and supermarket are a short walk from the villa. We had a driver for a day but the island was easy to drive around and there's loads to see. Would definitely recommend.
