Location
About the surrounding area of Luum Hideaway ApartmentLuum Hideaway is located in an exclusive development in Aldea Zama in Tulum on the glorious Yucatan Peninsula. You do not have to venture far to realise why this area is one of Mexico’s culinary wonders. You will find everything from charming little cafes to world-class eateries as well as plenty of fresh fish and a wonderful array of bars. The town enjoys a new age yoga vibe with many yoga studios, gyms and a wonderful spa. You can walk to either the beach or town centre from the apartment or take a short drive or cycle along the paved bike path. In keeping with Tulum’s eco-conscious nature, you will see ethically produced and handcrafted goods when shopping including floaty kaftans, handwoven bags and leather sandles. The boutiques are usually open until 10pm.
Tulum’s world-renowned archeological site, the ancient Mayan ruins, is just 10 minutes drive on the northern end of the beach. In their time, they served as a point of defence against invaders from the land and sea. It is the only walled city that the Maya built and the only one by the edge of the Caribbean. When the Spanish first found the site in 1518, they recorded that it was as large as Seville. The Castle, a handsome pyramid perched on the edge of a cliff above the snow-white beach, aptly called Paradise Beach, offers spectacular views of the ancient city and the coastline. Tulum is also famous for its cenotes, underground rivers and caverns where visitors can swim and explore. These gorgeous sinkholes with rugged walls and crystal clear water are perfect for refreshing dips on hot days, away from the beach crowds. Visitors are very attracted by the sea turtles. From May to October, they can be seen on the beaches where they come to lay their eggs after nightfall. You can visit Akumal to swim up close with the turtles. It is an amazing experience. The nightlife in Tulum is amazing with fantastic gastronomy with many vegan and vegetarian options, exotic cocktail bars, full moon parties and popular Cuban bars.
The massive Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka’an is incredible, the largest protected area on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. It is home to endangered creatures and boasts some of the Yucatan’s most sublime landscapes. It is just south of Tulum. The name Sian Ka’an – Yucatec May means ‘where the sky is born’ and perfectly captures the magnificence of the 1.3 million acre reserve. It is home to spider monkeys, crocodiles, jaguars, pumas, tapirs, howler monkeys, sea turtles, giant land crabs, manatees, dolphins, some 400 fish species and more than 330 bird species. You can board boats or 4x4’s to explore the jungle, mangroves and lagoons.
Tulum is 2 hours from one of the New & Wonders of the World, Chichen-Itza, another very worthy trip.

Region
Hugging the Caribbean coastline of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum enjoys incredible white sandy beaches, ancient Mayan ruins and a bustling cultural scene. This coastal town, once a quiet fishing village, has evolved into a sought-after destination, offering a unique blend of history, natural beauty and considerable contemporary charm. Tulum has embraced sustainable tourism and many resorts showcase eco-friendly architecture that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings. From boutique hotels to luxurious beachfront properties, these establishments often prioritize eco-conscious practices, making them a perfect choice for travellers seeking a harmonious blend of comfort and environmental responsibility. Tulum has become a global hub for wellness seekers, with numerous yoga retreats and wellness centres. Visitors can participate in beachfront yoga sessions, holistic spa treatments and meditation workshops, immersing themselves in a rejuvenating and mindful experience.
One of the most iconic attractions in Tulum is the ancient Mayan archaeological site, perched majestically on cliffs overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The well-preserved ruins include the Castillo, a towering pyramid, and the Temple of the Frescoes, adorned with intricate carvings. Visitors can explore the remnants of this once-thriving city and marvel at the ingenuity of the Mayan civilization.
Stretching along the coast, Tulum's beaches are renowned for their powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. Playa Paraíso is a favourite among sun-seekers, offering a serene setting for relaxation and water activities. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can explore the vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life just off the shore. A unique architectural feature of Tulum's beachfront are the charming cabanas. These rustic yet stylish thatched-roof huts provide a cozy and intimate setting, allowing guests to experience the beauty of the Caribbean Sea right at their doorstep.
The Yucatán Peninsula is dotted with cenotes, natural sinkholes formed by collapsed cave systems. In the Tulum region, cenotes such as Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos beckon adventurers with their enchanting underground landscapes. These freshwater pools provide a refreshing escape from the heat and an opportunity for snorkeling and cave exploration. For nature lovers, a visit to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a must. This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, including mangroves, wetlands and coral reefs. Guided tours offer glimpses of the region's rich biodiversity, with opportunities to spot dolphins, manatees and numerous bird species. Exploring Tulum by bicycle is a popular and eco-friendly way to take in the sights. The town and its surroundings offer bike-friendly paths, allowing cyclists to traverse the area at a leisurely pace, from the archaeological site to the vibrant town centre. Families with a love for wildlife can visit the Tulum Monkey Sanctuary, where rescued monkeys and other animals are cared for. Educational tours allow children and adults alike to learn about the importance of conservation and animal welfare.
A short drive from Tulum, Akumal is known for its serene beaches and the opportunity to swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat. The laid-back atmosphere and vibrant coral reefs make it a delightful day trip destination. Inland from Tulum lies Valladolid, a colonial town steeped in history. Its characterful streets, historic churches and vibrant markets provide a glimpse into Mexico's colonial past. The nearby Cenote Zaci offers a refreshing break for those exploring the town.
Tulum beckons with open arms, inviting you to explore its rich tapestry of culture and landscapes. It will send you home with marvellous holiday memories.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesZama Hideaway is perfect for a small family. You can also hire a travel crib and highchair for an additional cost if required. The plunge pool is a wonderful bonus, especially for early morning or evening dips. The communal pool is also excellent and beautifully framed by the tropical garden.
Aldea Zama is a delightful neighbourhood where you can relax. It is close to many restaurants and of course the famous beach where children are delighted to spot the turtles. The fine, snow-white sand is wonderful and the water shallow and clear. Please be careful of the currents though as sometimes they can be strong. La Zebra Beach Club is excellent for children with a wooden playground and lots of activities. As well as excellent beaches, the Yucantan Peninsula boasts many underground pools where the Mayans communicated with the gods. The water is incredibly clear and you can often see fish swimming and plant life at the bottom. Some of the cenotes are found in caves while others are open. The swimming is magical. You need to cover up though as most of the cenotes do not allow sunscreen or mosquito repellent as they poison the fragile ecosystem.
The location of Tulum is fabulous for animal lovers. You can visit the nearby jungle preserves and are likely to wake to tropical birdsong. Akumal is a small beach town between Tulum and Playa del Carman. Akumal means ‘land of turtles’ in Mayan language and here children can snorkel with turtles off the beach. There are three sheltered bays, Half Moon, Greater Akumal and Aventuras Akumal. All of them are good for snorkeling, kayaking and swimming. At the spectacular Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO Heritage Site, children will enjoy seeing crocodiles, dolphins, monkeys, manatees, ocelots and lots more. Again, there are places to snorkel and you can take a three hour boat tour to the middle of the reserve to see fish and corals and enjoy lunch on the beach. In Tulum itself, you will be able to spot iguanas everywhere but especially around the Tulum Ruins. The iguanas are born bright green but change to the adult grey colour after about a year.
If your children enjoy the Tulum Ruins, you may like to take a trip to the ruins at Coba, roughly 50km from Tulum. Three settlements have been discovered between the two lagoons as well as two ball courts and Nohoch Mul, the highest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan. You can explore the site on foot, by bicycle or by cycle rickshaw. Children enjoy climbing the 120 steps to the top of Nochoch Mul where the views are spectacular. The ruins of Chichen Itza are one of Mexico’s most popular attractions. They date back to around 600AD and are pretty incredible.
There are several adventure parks close to Tulum where children enjoy some thrilling fun. Xel-Ha boasts all kinds of land and water activies. It is a universe dedicated to ecology and the preservation of flora and fauna and features one of the world’s most beautiful natural aquariums. Children can snorkel next to plants and hundreds of tropical fish, slide down the Salpichanga and fly with a vine to drop into the cool water of a cenote. They can balance on the Trepachanga and walk over the river between two loose strings. Hammock Island is relaxing. There is so much to see strolling along jungle footpaths or you can cycle the Land of Huh cycle path. The Ixchel Grotto has been carved by underground rivers. The children’s playground is excellent. Xplor Park is another paradise for thrill-seeking children where they can zoom past impressive rock formations as you take part in adrenaline pumping activities such as rafting, cave swimming and zip lining. Families can take a drive in amphibious vehicles stretching 570 meters over crystal clear water and enjoy panoramic views over the jungle as they glide down 14 zip lines. The other park is Xcaret Park. It offers more than 40 attractions and activities including an ancient Mayan ball game and the Xcaret Mexico Espectacular celebration, a night time show. Visitors can enjoy water activities on the beach, inlet and rivers. There is a Coral Reef Aquarium, Martine Turtle area, Manatee Lagoon, Bat Cave, Butterfly Pavilion, Deer Refuge, Spider Monkey Island and Jaguar Island. The Rotating Scenic Tower offer spectacular views. There is so much on offer it is easy to see why the ticket is for 9 hours of entertainment!

Stylish apartment in a great location
We stayed at the Luum Hideaway Apartment for four nights. We really enjoyed the apartment - it was conveniently located within walking distance to loads of great restaurants, coffee bars and shops.
The apartment itself was very stylish, and included an outdoors plunge pool which came in handy in the heat! The apartment is located in a complex with about 6 other apartments, with a communal pool, but we never saw anyone, so we practically had the whole place to ourselves!
The apartment had good amenities, and the beds were very comfortable! Three things that could have been better:
1) The door leading to the apartment was broken so we were unable to lock it (the main door could be locked), which made us nervous leaving our belongings throughout the day. We messaged the person in contact, but they never responded and the issue was not resolved.
2) The TV in one of the rooms were not working and some of the A/C remotes did not have batteries
3) There was no shampoo left, which I thought would have been provided
Overall, I would highly recommend the apartment and I would go back! Great holiday all in all :)
