Location
About the surrounding area of Soliman Bay Bungalow 1A much-loved beach destination that’s all about relaxation and destressing, Tulum is one of the highlights of northern Mexico, about two hours south of Cancun. Those who love yoga, meditation and the like will be in their element, and if you’re looking to explore the area’s history there are some amazing landmarks to seek out.
Tulum is located on the Yucatán Peninsula, an area known for white sand beaches, turquoise seas and areas of exotic jungle. You can experience both chilled out beach life and the attractions of town, in two distinct areas – it may take around 25 minutes to travel between them. On the beach side of things, you’ll find an array of beach clubs with all the amenities you would expect, or you can visit one of the area’s public access beaches. The town itself offers an incredible dining scene, and you will also find wellness-themed experiences all over the place.
An alternative to the beach can be found in the form of Tulum’s cenotes. These sunken, natural pools make an unforgettable swimming destination, and there are several around the Tulum region. While these charge an entrance fee, and usually an additional fee for the use of cameras or drones (as this is a very Insta-worthy experience), you won’t want to miss out on visiting at least one.
Another must is the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which covers more than 2,000 square miles. It’s advisable to book a tour, due to both the size of the reserve and the road conditions which lead there – your hire car would be likely to struggle. You can see all kinds of wildlife, from dolphins and turtles to crocodiles and manatees in the Punta Allen part of Sian Ka’an.
You can explore various Mayan ruins around the area. The ancient remains of the city of Coba, including eye-catching pyramids, are within an hour of Tulum town. To see all the best bits, consider hiring a bike or engaging the services of a local guide with a carriage who can do the pedalling for you.
Also an archaeological highlight, the mighty Chichen-Itza is around two hours from Tulum. One of Mexico’s most popular visitor attractions, this impressive site is another where a guide can help you get the most out of your visit. In this area, you will also find a few more cenotes.
If Coba and Chichen-Itza are too far for you, there are also ruins in Tulum itself, right on the clifftop, overlooking the ocean and a perfect little beach where you can take a dip. Some people would argue these are actually the nicest to visit.

Region
Hugging the Caribbean coastline of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum enjoys incredible white sandy beaches, ancient Mayan ruins and a bustling cultural scene. This coastal town, once a quiet fishing village, has evolved into a sought-after destination, offering a unique blend of history, natural beauty and considerable contemporary charm. Tulum has embraced sustainable tourism and many resorts showcase eco-friendly architecture that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings. From boutique hotels to luxurious beachfront properties, these establishments often prioritize eco-conscious practices, making them a perfect choice for travellers seeking a harmonious blend of comfort and environmental responsibility. Tulum has become a global hub for wellness seekers, with numerous yoga retreats and wellness centres. Visitors can participate in beachfront yoga sessions, holistic spa treatments and meditation workshops, immersing themselves in a rejuvenating and mindful experience.
One of the most iconic attractions in Tulum is the ancient Mayan archaeological site, perched majestically on cliffs overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The well-preserved ruins include the Castillo, a towering pyramid, and the Temple of the Frescoes, adorned with intricate carvings. Visitors can explore the remnants of this once-thriving city and marvel at the ingenuity of the Mayan civilization.
Stretching along the coast, Tulum's beaches are renowned for their powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. Playa Paraíso is a favourite among sun-seekers, offering a serene setting for relaxation and water activities. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can explore the vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life just off the shore. A unique architectural feature of Tulum's beachfront are the charming cabanas. These rustic yet stylish thatched-roof huts provide a cozy and intimate setting, allowing guests to experience the beauty of the Caribbean Sea right at their doorstep.
The Yucatán Peninsula is dotted with cenotes, natural sinkholes formed by collapsed cave systems. In the Tulum region, cenotes such as Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos beckon adventurers with their enchanting underground landscapes. These freshwater pools provide a refreshing escape from the heat and an opportunity for snorkeling and cave exploration. For nature lovers, a visit to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a must. This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, including mangroves, wetlands and coral reefs. Guided tours offer glimpses of the region's rich biodiversity, with opportunities to spot dolphins, manatees and numerous bird species. Exploring Tulum by bicycle is a popular and eco-friendly way to take in the sights. The town and its surroundings offer bike-friendly paths, allowing cyclists to traverse the area at a leisurely pace, from the archaeological site to the vibrant town centre. Families with a love for wildlife can visit the Tulum Monkey Sanctuary, where rescued monkeys and other animals are cared for. Educational tours allow children and adults alike to learn about the importance of conservation and animal welfare.
A short drive from Tulum, Akumal is known for its serene beaches and the opportunity to swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat. The laid-back atmosphere and vibrant coral reefs make it a delightful day trip destination. Inland from Tulum lies Valladolid, a colonial town steeped in history. Its characterful streets, historic churches and vibrant markets provide a glimpse into Mexico's colonial past. The nearby Cenote Zaci offers a refreshing break for those exploring the town.
Tulum beckons with open arms, inviting you to explore its rich tapestry of culture and landscapes. It will send you home with marvellous holiday memories.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThere’s plenty for kids to look forward to in and around Tulum. For an easy day out beside the sea, take them to Playa Paraiso, a public beach which offers the chance to go snorkelling, boat trips and sun beds for hire. If this popular beach gets too busy, you could also try the quieter Santa Fe Beach. Many of Tulum’s beach clubs are also welcoming to families, among them La Zebra and Ziggy’s.
About 20 minutes’ drive north of the town, you will find the Aktun Chen Nature Park. This rainforest park combines all kind of activities with its natural wonders – they can enjoy zip-lining, caving, snorkelling and more, with the underground river a big favourite. It also incorporates its own zoo and restaurant.
Tulum’s archaeological zone offers an educational experience, overlooking the stunning Caribbean Sea. The ancient ruins of a Mayan city form one of the area’s top attractions – therefore, it’s worth getting there early to avoid the crowds. A more modern addition to the town is the Tulum Tower, which will give you an amazing 360° view of the surroundings.
The magnificent cenotes which the Yucatán Peninsula is famed for provide numerous opportunities for fun days out. Among those closest to Tulum town are Calavera, Escondido and Gran Cenote. As one of the largest, this one offers crystal clear, shallow pools that are ideal for kids, connected by wooden boardwalks.
The curiously named Cenote Car Wash is a short drive from town and is a family favourite, although if your kids aren’t strong swimmers, it’s worth being aware that the waters are very deep in places. Another popular local swimming spot is the Kaan Luum Lagoon, where the waters stay warm all year.
Situated to the south of Tulum, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is one of the region’s unmissable attractions. Huge and varied, this nature reserve offers the opportunity to observe all sorts of wildlife, including dolphins and turtles. Peaceful beaches, a coral reef, canals and lagoons all add to the experience.
If they enjoy the ruins of Tulum, you could also take them further afield to see wonders like Chichen-Itza, Coba or Muyil. Perhaps surprisingly, the public are welcome to climb on Coba’s ‘Great Mound’ pyramid, and you will be rewarded by a wonderful view from the top. Muyil’s ruins offer a similar experience, located close to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
