Location
About the surrounding area of Soliman Bay Bungalow 2On Mexico's Riviera Maya, Tulum has become one of the country's most popular destinations, thanks to its wonderful beaches and relaxed vibe. A renowned yoga and wellness retreat, Tulum also offers historic gems in the form of its ancient ruins and an excellent and varied dining scene.
One of the top attractions of this region is the abundance of cenotes. These scenic, natural pools are a favourite for swimming and snorkelling and are incredibly photogenic too. You will find several around Tulum, including the large Gran Cenote and the Cenote Car Wash, so named due to its former use.
Tulum also scores highly when it comes to beach life, with an array of well-equipped beach clubs providing an alternative to the popular public beaches such as Las Palmas and Playa Paraiso. Another notable destination is the Kaan Luum Lagoon, which has a cenote in the middle of it. The contrasting colours create a stunning effect best captured by drone photography. It's also a pleasing place for a swim, with warm waters all year round.
Be sure to visit the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just south of Tulum town. A vast site of more than 2,000 square miles, this nature reserve is best explored on a guided tour. It offers the chance to see all sorts of creatures, including crocodiles and dolphins, and makes a great family trip.
Tulum's Mayan ruins are impressive enough to draw many visitors and sit right on the clifftop. There are many other notable ruins around the area which are well worth the journey if archaeology is your thing.
The ancient remains of the city of Coba, including eye-catching pyramids, are within an hour of Tulum, while Chichen-Itza is around two hours away. This is considered the absolute must-see when you visit the Yucatán Peninsula. Chichen-Itza was once its most populous city and the remains include all sorts of ancient structures. The centrepiece is the well-preserved El Castillo Pyramid, which dominates the site. You will also find several more tempting cenotes around this area, and also Coba, to make these trips even more worthwhile.

Region
Hugging the Caribbean coastline of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum enjoys incredible white sandy beaches, ancient Mayan ruins and a bustling cultural scene. This coastal town, once a quiet fishing village, has evolved into a sought-after destination, offering a unique blend of history, natural beauty and considerable contemporary charm. Tulum has embraced sustainable tourism and many resorts showcase eco-friendly architecture that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings. From boutique hotels to luxurious beachfront properties, these establishments often prioritize eco-conscious practices, making them a perfect choice for travellers seeking a harmonious blend of comfort and environmental responsibility. Tulum has become a global hub for wellness seekers, with numerous yoga retreats and wellness centres. Visitors can participate in beachfront yoga sessions, holistic spa treatments and meditation workshops, immersing themselves in a rejuvenating and mindful experience.
One of the most iconic attractions in Tulum is the ancient Mayan archaeological site, perched majestically on cliffs overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The well-preserved ruins include the Castillo, a towering pyramid, and the Temple of the Frescoes, adorned with intricate carvings. Visitors can explore the remnants of this once-thriving city and marvel at the ingenuity of the Mayan civilization.
Stretching along the coast, Tulum's beaches are renowned for their powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. Playa Paraíso is a favourite among sun-seekers, offering a serene setting for relaxation and water activities. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can explore the vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life just off the shore. A unique architectural feature of Tulum's beachfront are the charming cabanas. These rustic yet stylish thatched-roof huts provide a cozy and intimate setting, allowing guests to experience the beauty of the Caribbean Sea right at their doorstep.
The Yucatán Peninsula is dotted with cenotes, natural sinkholes formed by collapsed cave systems. In the Tulum region, cenotes such as Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos beckon adventurers with their enchanting underground landscapes. These freshwater pools provide a refreshing escape from the heat and an opportunity for snorkeling and cave exploration. For nature lovers, a visit to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a must. This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, including mangroves, wetlands and coral reefs. Guided tours offer glimpses of the region's rich biodiversity, with opportunities to spot dolphins, manatees and numerous bird species. Exploring Tulum by bicycle is a popular and eco-friendly way to take in the sights. The town and its surroundings offer bike-friendly paths, allowing cyclists to traverse the area at a leisurely pace, from the archaeological site to the vibrant town centre. Families with a love for wildlife can visit the Tulum Monkey Sanctuary, where rescued monkeys and other animals are cared for. Educational tours allow children and adults alike to learn about the importance of conservation and animal welfare.
A short drive from Tulum, Akumal is known for its serene beaches and the opportunity to swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat. The laid-back atmosphere and vibrant coral reefs make it a delightful day trip destination. Inland from Tulum lies Valladolid, a colonial town steeped in history. Its characterful streets, historic churches and vibrant markets provide a glimpse into Mexico's colonial past. The nearby Cenote Zaci offers a refreshing break for those exploring the town.
Tulum beckons with open arms, inviting you to explore its rich tapestry of culture and landscapes. It will send you home with marvellous holiday memories.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesTake the kids to Tulum, and they can enjoy an amazing adventure by the sea! The town's gorgeous beaches offer a mix of open-to-all areas and private beach clubs, so however you choose to enjoy the turquoise waters and white sands, you'll find it. Try Playa Paraiso for boat trips and snorkelling or for something a little quieter, Santa Fe.
There's a great day out to be had at the Aktun Chen Nature Park, about 20 minutes from Tulum. This rainforest park offers activities like zip-lining and caving and has its own small zoo. The highlight might just be the underground river – the perfect place for getting active in the water.
On a similar theme, the many cenotes found around Tulum and beyond are a real gift if you're looking for something you can enjoy together. You'll see them all over the Yucatán Peninsula, but those closest to Tulum include Calavera, Escondido and the big Gran Cenote. This family favourite offers crystal clear, shallow pools connected by wooden boardwalks, so they're ideal for kids who are less confident in the water.
More suitable for experienced swimmers, the Cenote Car Wash is another pretty spot but has some deep waters – up to around 50 feet in places. The warm waters of the Kaan Luum Lagoon, also near Tulum town, form part of another particularly scenic destination.
There's a fair bit of water to be found in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve too. Situated to the south of Tulum, this gigantic nature reserve has lagoons and canals and offers the opportunity to see all kinds of aquatic wildlife, including crocodiles, dolphins and turtles. Take a guided tour to get the best out of it, or the sheer size may overwhelm you.
Exploring the many ancient ruins of the Yucatán Peninsula may bring out the archaeologist in inquisitive kids. Start with the clifftop relics of Tulum itself, and if they want more, you can take a trip to Muyil or the ancient city of Coba. The most majestic of them all can be found at Chichen-Itza. It's a couple of hours away, but you'll want to see it while you're there. The highlight is the impressively well-preserved El Castillo Pyramid.
