Location
About the surrounding area of Soliman Bay Bungalow 3The Riviera Maya’s big draw when it comes to yoga retreats and generally getting away from it all, Tulum is a North Mexico gem. Combining historic ruins with gorgeous beaches and excellent dining, it has all you need for a feelgood break.
You will definitely want to check out the cenotes. These are natural, sunken pools which offer an enchanting location for swimming, and there are many of them all over the region. The large Gran Cenote and the popular Cenote Car Wash are just two you will find around Tulum. You should also check out the warming waters of the Kaan Luum Lagoon, which has a cenote right in the centre. This creates a stunning colour contrast you might want to capture on camera.
Tulum has a host of beaches, with Las Palmas and Playa Paraiso among those you can just rock up to. Alternatively, you can pay for a spot at one of the many beach clubs. For a quiet time on the sands, the public beach Santa Fe is recommended.
Make sure you visit the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just south of Tulum. This vast site of more than 2,000 square miles is best explored on a guided tour, and offers the chance to see all sorts of creatures, including crocodiles, turtles and dolphins.
Another notable highlight are the Mayan ruins found on the cliffs in Tulum. The remains of this old walled city, including a clifftop Castillo, draw many visitors. There are many more ruins to see if you travel a bit further. About one hour away, you will find the ancient remains of the city of Coba, while Chichen-Itza is around two hours away. Once this was the most populous city on the Yucatán Peninsula, and a good amount of its structures remain. The well-preserved El Castillo Pyramid is the star attraction.
Tulum excels in much more than beaches and monuments – there is an impressive restaurant scene which offers the chance to dine in some wonderful settings. Prices are high at the top end, but you can still eat well for a good price in many places. The town has also become something of a wellness hub, with all kinds of treatments available. Look out for the Temezcal sweat lodges for a memorable experience, or bring your yoga mat and appreciate the serenity of Tulum at its most peaceful.

Region
Hugging the Caribbean coastline of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum enjoys incredible white sandy beaches, ancient Mayan ruins and a bustling cultural scene. This coastal town, once a quiet fishing village, has evolved into a sought-after destination, offering a unique blend of history, natural beauty and considerable contemporary charm. Tulum has embraced sustainable tourism and many resorts showcase eco-friendly architecture that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings. From boutique hotels to luxurious beachfront properties, these establishments often prioritize eco-conscious practices, making them a perfect choice for travellers seeking a harmonious blend of comfort and environmental responsibility. Tulum has become a global hub for wellness seekers, with numerous yoga retreats and wellness centres. Visitors can participate in beachfront yoga sessions, holistic spa treatments and meditation workshops, immersing themselves in a rejuvenating and mindful experience.
One of the most iconic attractions in Tulum is the ancient Mayan archaeological site, perched majestically on cliffs overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The well-preserved ruins include the Castillo, a towering pyramid, and the Temple of the Frescoes, adorned with intricate carvings. Visitors can explore the remnants of this once-thriving city and marvel at the ingenuity of the Mayan civilization.
Stretching along the coast, Tulum's beaches are renowned for their powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters. Playa Paraíso is a favourite among sun-seekers, offering a serene setting for relaxation and water activities. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts can explore the vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life just off the shore. A unique architectural feature of Tulum's beachfront are the charming cabanas. These rustic yet stylish thatched-roof huts provide a cozy and intimate setting, allowing guests to experience the beauty of the Caribbean Sea right at their doorstep.
The Yucatán Peninsula is dotted with cenotes, natural sinkholes formed by collapsed cave systems. In the Tulum region, cenotes such as Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos beckon adventurers with their enchanting underground landscapes. These freshwater pools provide a refreshing escape from the heat and an opportunity for snorkeling and cave exploration. For nature lovers, a visit to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is a must. This UNESCO World Heritage Site encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, including mangroves, wetlands and coral reefs. Guided tours offer glimpses of the region's rich biodiversity, with opportunities to spot dolphins, manatees and numerous bird species. Exploring Tulum by bicycle is a popular and eco-friendly way to take in the sights. The town and its surroundings offer bike-friendly paths, allowing cyclists to traverse the area at a leisurely pace, from the archaeological site to the vibrant town centre. Families with a love for wildlife can visit the Tulum Monkey Sanctuary, where rescued monkeys and other animals are cared for. Educational tours allow children and adults alike to learn about the importance of conservation and animal welfare.
A short drive from Tulum, Akumal is known for its serene beaches and the opportunity to swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat. The laid-back atmosphere and vibrant coral reefs make it a delightful day trip destination. Inland from Tulum lies Valladolid, a colonial town steeped in history. Its characterful streets, historic churches and vibrant markets provide a glimpse into Mexico's colonial past. The nearby Cenote Zaci offers a refreshing break for those exploring the town.
Tulum beckons with open arms, inviting you to explore its rich tapestry of culture and landscapes. It will send you home with marvellous holiday memories.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesAll the family can enjoy the delights of the Yucatán Peninsula, and Tulum makes a great base. With its fantastic beach scene, this town is made for families, offering beautiful turquoise waters and huge stretches of white sand. If you prefer an open beach to a beach club, you could head for the popular Playa Paraiso.
At the Aktun Chen Nature Park, about 20 minutes from Tulum, everyone can appreciate the beauty of the Mexican rainforest. Not only that, there are lots of activities to try, including zip-lining and caving, plus there’s a restaurant and zoo. The underground river is a particular highlight of this park, so don’t miss it.
Just as good for having fun in the water are the many cenotes found around Tulum and beyond. You’ll see them all over the Yucatán Peninsula, but those closest to Tulum include Calavera, Escondido and the Gran Cenote – one of the largest in the area. This cenote has an array of shallow pools connected by wooden boardwalks, so it’s a good choice for younger children.
The Cenote Car Wash is another pretty spot for swimming. Be aware that this cenote is very deep in places, so it’s not suitable for inexperienced swimmers. A popular alternative is the Kaan Luum Lagoon, also near Tulum, with its striking cenote right in the middle of the lagoon – you may not be able to use it, but it looks spectacular all the same.
The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is another natural attraction that will impress the whole family. Found to the south of Tulum, this gigantic nature reserve has lagoons and canals, and offers the opportunity to see dolphins, crocodiles, manatees and turtles, among other species. It’s best to get a guide to take you there, as driving there can be difficult.
Tulum’s ancient ruins are a real highlight of the town, and as they are situated on the clifftops, you can enjoy some stunning coastal views while you are visiting them. Tulum has lots of great places to eat too – you could do your own tour of its eateries, or book on to a local food tour to get to know the local cuisine even better. Another great way to explore is by bike – you can easily hire bicycles for the family and go exploring around Tulum on two wheels.
Don’t forget to head further afield and visit more of the ancient ruins of the Yucatán Peninsula. Try Muyil, Coba or the most famous of them all, Chichen-Itza. They’re a couple of hours away from Tulum but these ruins, dominated by the well-preserved El Castillo Pyramid, are considered a must-see.
