It's the Old Town of Kotor which draws the crowds to the area, however – sights such as St Tryphon's Cathedral and a host of laidback restaurant terraces add to its considerable charm, while beautiful areas of nature like Lovcen National Park and Lipa Cave provide no end of excursions.

Location
About the surrounding area of Velika on the BayThe Bay of Kotor is a northern Montenegro highlight, and the town of Tivat is one of its most glamorous spots. Home to a 450-berth, full-service marina, it's a place to enjoy life to the full and offers upmarket shopping, dining and nightlife, and many special events. The calendar is packed with fashion shows, luxury brand launches, concerts and wine tastings.
Kotor's stunning Old Town also sits on the bay, enjoying a rugged mountain backdrop. Ideal for water sports on the River Skurda, this popular destination is scenic and historic. Climbing the walls of the Old Town will reward you with spectacular views. Alternatively, take a boat trip – you can visit the Blue Cave, a notable local attraction where snorkelling is the thing to do.
Look out for St Tryphon's Cathedral and plenty of churches in the Old Town. The town is known for its much-loved street cats, and by visiting the town's Cat Museum, you'll be able to contribute to their care. Kotor is especially bustling when cruise ships arrive in port, ensuring the café and restaurant terraces are in demand. Local seafood such as squid and octopus will likely be on the menu.
Montenegro's beautiful coast provides yet more options for excursions. Its best-known destination, Budva, has its own charming Old Town to explore, along with the upscale Dukley Marina area. The family-friendly Aquapark is a great place to head with kids, and as the biggest water park in the Balkans has no end of thrilling rides and slides. If you're looking for beaches, there are numerous great ones all along the coast. Highlights include laidback Petrovac, ideal for water sports, and the 12km Velika Plaza in Ulcinj, the longest beach in Europe.
The idyllic Sveti Stefan, south of Budva, is Montenegro's most photographed destination. The private island is closed to all but the resort's guests, which occupies it, but you can still enjoy the view from the beaches across the causeway.
Incredible areas of natural beauty, notably the National Parks of Lovcen, Durmitor and Lake Skadar, are well worth exploring, with Lovcen located not far from Kotor. Unmissable sights include the Tara Canyon, the biggest in Europe and second only to the Grand Canyon.

About the Region & Getting There
About the Bay of Kotor
The Bay of Kotor, or Boka, has been a World Heritage Site since 1979, so be assured of its captivating scenery that includes; a Venetian old town, a Fortress, Roman Mosaics, churches and a glistening cove that all culminate to provide guests with an exceptional holiday destination.
Sailing through the fjord you will notice the Orjen Mountains along the west, and the Lovćen Mountain range curling around the east, which outline this spellbinding landscape. As you enter through the bay you are greeted by a man-made islet that is home to Our Lady of the Rocks Church and a museum. This is the first of many reminders that you are about to reach a region of Montenegro that is famed for its natural scenery and poignant architecture.
The Bay of Kotor is made up of four cornerstones - Lastva, Morinj, Stoliv and the most renowned Tivat. Within these villages you are able to find iconic landmarks such as St Petka Church and St Mary’s Church, or for something a little less pious; simply enjoy Tivat Marina and Gornji Stoliv’s Olive grove & Fig orchard.
Travel inland and strap on a pair of hiking boots as you explore Lovcen National Park. Although it is about an hours drive from the Bay, it really is worth the day trip! Whether you’re travelling with a Botanists, Ecologist, Entomologist or Zoologist; they will be pleased to know that there’s an immeasurable number of species that include birds, insects, bears, wolves and some breath-taking flora & fauna.
We urge holidaymakers to make the most of Kodor! This charming town has everything you need to forget the day-to-day tribulations of home life. Not only does this small medieval refuge have a host of cafes & restaurants, but there are some must see attractions like the Maritime Museum, the Cats Museum of Kotor, Cats of Kotor Shop and St. John’s Hill. The perfect retreat for a family in need of sun, sea & sentiment.
Prior to Booking
As many of our regions in Montenegro are coastal, there can sometimes be some adverse weather. This tends to only really occur outside of the Peak Season though. When thinking about booking your holiday to Montenegro, please consult Foreign travel advice for more information.

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChildren are sure to be inspired by the wonders of Montenegro. The beautiful Bay of Kotor has plenty to delight them, starting with the town of Kotor itself.
There is a lot to enjoy here, including many family-friendly restaurants and pretty parks. Look out for the street cats and the Cat Museum, which is a highlight of the Old Town. You will also find a Medieval Museum, which has lots of exhibits about Montenegro’s past. If they’re into history, the town of Risan, with its Roman ruins and mosaics, makes a good day trip.
During the summer, Kotor hosts the Festival of Theatre for Children, which brings plenty of entertainment and interactive classes and workshops to town. Another summer highlight is the Kotor Arts Festival, incorporating Boka Night. This celebration includes food, music, dancing and lots of fun, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.
You can all enjoy wonderful views over the Bay of Kotor if you walk the city walls. These extend up into the mountains so it’s a bit of a hike, but definitely worth the effort. Take some water and snacks to keep you going along the way.
The adventure park inside Lovcen National Park is great for adventurous kids. You can swing through the trees on rope bridges, or zoom through them on a zip-line. With unique trails suitable for younger children, this fantastic park has something for all ages.
You will also find go-karting and an adventure park in Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, and an animal sanctuary. A short drive from the city are the Cijevna Waterfalls, a stunning natural landmark where there is also a restaurant and play area.
Alternatively, head for Budva – this popular seaside resort is perfect for beach lovers and is also home to the huge Aquapark. Another good beach for kids can be found at Sveti Stefan, where there are paddle boats to hire if you fancy taking to water. You can also enjoy the wonderful views out to the private island which everyone wants to photograph.

I would definitely come back.
Velika on the Bay is a great place to relax away from the more populated areas of Kotor, Tivat, Budva, etc... the swimming is fantastic. All the amenities are there and functional. Large patio umbrellas are great for a day by the water. Underwater lights for night swimming also great. Beds are comfy. Two large bays for cars was a huge plus. Though the area isn't as developed as the big tourist spots, it's a short drive to all of them. I would definitely come back.

It is absolutely amazing place!
Perfect for family or group vacation with quite adult people, because you have your own see deep enough to dive from the pier and for small children it might be dangerous. So we were 6 persons from 19 to 51 y.o. and for us it was one of the best experience of renting for vacation. You can cook for your group by yourselves or you can use several restaurants near the place. By car the road to Tivat usually took 35 min, same to Kotor. So if you travel by car it is the best option to combine different activities. The depth is enough for 52-feet boat to pick up us from the villa for amazing excursions in Kotor gulf and around several small islands in the open see. All facilities in villa are new and we hadn’t any inconvenience during our stay.
