Location
About the surrounding area of Villa GourzaAround 70km from Marrakech lies the beautiful National Park of Ouirgane, with its stunning scenery comprising of lush green pine forests and red-earth hills. A peaceful alternative to the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, Ouirgane offers you a fantastic base from which to explore the surrounding foothills, by hiking, mountain biking or even horse riding. Villa Gourza is a part of a small development of luxury private villas, nestled within this beautiful park, with spectacular views of the mountains beyond.
There are some fantastic hotels nearby you can visit, including Sir Richard Branson’s Tamadot just 20 minutes drive away, with multiple pools, a spa, delicious restaurant and even a zoo! The local villages of Ouirgane and Marigha offer a small selection of shops to stock up on essentials, and the town of Asni 20 minutes drive away has a great weekly food market.
For day trips further afield; zip lining, golf and quad biking are all within easy reach of Villa Gourza. The picturesque village of Tahanaout 40km away is also a great option for a cultural experience. Set against the wonderful backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, its beautiful red clay architecture is beautifully enveloped by a mass of olive groves, orange and lemon trees. The Berber people open their homes to tourists so taking part in pottery or cooking workshops is a must-do. They also have some fantastic markets to try your hand at bargaining.
And finally you’ll want to visit Morocco’s most memorable experience, Marrakesh. Known as the red city due to the hue of the 19km wall around its seething array of souks, this magnificent place was built 1000 years ago yet only gained tourist popularity since the 60’s. In a whirlwind of the senses, you’ll be greeted by snake charmers and fire eaters and get lost amongst the array of stalls selling everything from colourful spices to luxury leather goods. Or simply sit back with a traditional mint tea and watch the world go by.

Best Suited For: All AgesAlways enjoyed by children of all ages is the Terres d’Amanar an adventure park (245 Avenue Mohammed V, after Tahanaout village, 2km left, then 3km. +212 5244 220089). A visit to Imlil and the Kasbah is always a lovely authentic place to explore.
A must is a day trip into Marrakech to visit the medina. Guilded tours are very helpful as they take out the hassle and you can visit the tanneries (smelly) and just running the gauntlet of the alleys and seeing the snake charmers in the square. I am sure Abdou could help here or Mohamed (Exotic Lines Travels). And of course a night in the desert is also a winner!

Owner Profile
How long have you owned the property?
We bought the villa before it was out of the ground in 2011.
What was it about the property that you first fell in love with?
The breath-taking views and tranquillity. Closely followed by the friendliness and hospitality of the local Berbers.
Are there any interesting stories in its history?
This was a very early development of this nature designed by British architect, Nick Gowing, in this area. It is unique to have a development of this nature (13 private villas and a small hotel/clubhouse) in the mountains. It also provides essential work and training for the local staff.
Have you ever had any famous guests staying?
Yes Harry Redknapp stayed in the villa when he and his wife attended Fleur East’s wedding which took over the whole of the complex. Also script writer on Silent Witness.
For anyone coming to stay, is there anything you suggest that they really…
Must do? Visit Marrakech! The antithesis of the peace and quiet of the Mountains.
Must eat? A tagine – have several tagines waiting to be used. A recipe for aubergine tagine can be found in one of our recipe books. Delicious.
Must see? The many wonderful gardens from the famous Majorelle and Le Jardins Secret in the heart of Marrakech to Andre Heller’s quirky L’Anima on Route Ourika to Le Paradis du Saffron.
What insider tip would you pass on about the property or the area?
This is a walking paradise so bring stout walking boots and poles so that you can explore the many trails in the area. If you have the energy you can walk to La Domaine de la Roseraie 4k away or a longer, tougher walk to the Kasbah Tamadot through the mountains. Both are lovely destinations. The staff, all Berbers, are friendly and several speak good English but true to custom if you are out walking or shopping you will be accosted and “sold” something as the “seller” knows someone at L’Amandier. They mean no harm and are extremely poor so please be polite and turn them down nicely. They can be persistent though! There is a “L’Amandier” dog, Fritz. He is harmless and very friendly but roams around the villas freely. We feed him and ply him with medicines however if you do not like dogs let the manager know and he will keep him away.

A very special place!
We had an amazing time at Villa Amandier, a really lovely 6 days for our family. It’s a beautifully designed house - we loved the scale of the hallway and dining/living room, the size of the bedrooms and the intimate courtyard. Each night we all lay on the roof spotting shooting stars. The garden is a delight especially first thing in the morning with all the birds congregating. And there was everything we needed facilities wise. It’s a very special place, we didn’t want to leave. But now we’re in Marrakech for 4 nights so a different adventure. Feeling very lucky.
