Location
About the surrounding area of Villa MilaniVilla Milani is only 8km from the beautiful small city of Loulé in the Algarve, there is a small café nearby, but more choice is available in Loulé itself where you have a great choice of cafes, bars, restaurants, small shops and a few supermarkets for your essentials. The nearest sandy beach is the stunning Alameda Praia da Marina in the beautiful village of Vilamoura some 14km away.
Loulé, was originally founded as a Roman fort, some time later it was an Arabian town called Al-Aliya, the preserved the ruins of its medieval castle, city wall, narrow streets (in particular Rua da Barbacã) and some interesting churches bear testimony to its past. The most important characteristic of this region is the simplicity of its architecture, its traditions, and the way of life of the people, the hinterland of the Algarve has not changed as quickly as the coastal regions.
One of the most interesting places in Loulé is Mercado de Loulé, the municipal market, where most locals buy their groceries, on certain days there are additional artisan stalls and even a gipsy market. Another is the shrine of Nossa Senhora da Piedade which can be seen from all around, it looks for all the world like a spaceship. You often see pilgrims making their way up the hill towards it, it is quite a hard walk but worth it for the views.
If you have a day exploring the more traditional villages of Algarve why not visit Tavira, it straddles the Gilão River, which reaches the sea through the inlets and lagoons of Ria Formosa Natural Park. Tavira Island has a long, sandy beach, plus salt pans that attract flamingos, spoonbills and other wading birds. Quarteria is beautiful old fishing village to visit it has a lovely beach and beautiful cobbled promenade lined by mature palms and lots of tiny fish restaurants. For something completely different take one of the river cruises from Portimão to Silves, the ancient capital of the Algarve, passengers have time to explore this beautiful small city and discover its history, during the return river trip refreshments are served, it is a magical trip especially on a late afternoon sailing should the tide be in your favour.
If you were to come to the Algarve for a golfing holiday, it offers some of the best links style courses in Europe. At Quinta do Lago you have a choice of three courses, one of which often hosts the Portuguese open. It also benefits from having other sporting facilities on site should some of your party not be golfers. Vale do Lobo is another luxury resort designed with golf in mind and is home to two of the most challenging and outstanding golf courses in the Algarve. The Royal, considered to be one of the most prestigious courses in Portugal, and the Ocean, a challenging course composed of the two original golf courses which were designed by Sir Henry Cotton offers the best views around and an unforgettable experience.
If you’d rather spend your holiday on the beach than on the golf course, the Algarve has mile upon mile of golden sands and clear waters. The beach in Praia de Dona Ana beach is considered to be one of the most picturesque with its dramatic backdrop of red sandstone cliffs, there’s nothing better than spending a day relaxing underneath the warm Portuguese sun.

ABOUT THE ALGARVE
Though most people tend to see the Algarve as all about the beaches and a holiday on the Med, there’s far much more to it than that. There’s actually a load of fascinating culture and history, superb cuisine and enthralling adventures to be had, though we’d be the first to admit that the beaches are pretty special too, with lots of sand, spectacle and wonderfully clean water.
But while you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Algarve, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesThis charming pink villa, with traditional turrets (they are actually chimneys) glorious swimming pool and luscious gardens looks like something from a fairy tale. Children will have a great time on holiday here, there is so much freedom, as well as the 8 x 12m pool, (100cm at the shallow end) there are amazing gardens in which to play and have fun, there’s even little secret areas and a picnic table should they wish to be the ones to dine alone.
There is plenty to do in the local area, from chilling on the beaches, screaming your way down the flumes at the water park, investigating local history or perhaps you could go horse riding at nearby stables. Should that seem a little daunting if you have never ridden a horse, it is possible to ride donkeys! the laidback nature of the animals allows you to immediately enjoy a relaxing hike or if you prefer to just walk alongside them it’s up to you. Travel back in time for a few hours and stroll through the beautiful “Quinta de Burro de Paderne” located in the middle of a nature reserve, not far from your villa.
Inspiration for a beach visit can be found at Sand City in Lagoa, 55000 tons of sand is spread out over 6 hectares of outdoor exhibition space. Guests can expect to see Cristiano Ronaldo next to Fernando Pessoa and the Belém Tower, Pope Francis riding a Vespa, the Eiffel Tower, Queen Elizabeth II having tea next to Big Ben. During the day, the sun allows for a clear view of the meticulous detail of the sand sculptures. However, visiting again at night during the summer the array of indirect lighting makes for a mesmerizing and fantasy like experience.
Praia de Dona Ana is perfect for families as well as for young people willing to have a go with snorkels, surfboards and other aquatic sports and is of course attended by lifeguards during the high season, the sand is beautiful and full of interesting shells which children and adults alike will enjoy gathering.
Surely a visit to a theme park is a must and not just for the children! At Zoomarine just a few kilometres from Albufeira, you can watch presentations with dolphins, seals and sea lions and see an amazing aquarium with sharks. Zoomarine Beach provides a designated beach section for relaxing or enjoying the wild wave pool and assorted rides and slides.
