Location
About the surrounding area of Quinta do RioQuinta do Rio is very close to the centre of Olhao, a major fishing port. It was in Olhao that the first canning factory was established in 1882, sparking a trend that spread in both directions along the coast, with canned tuna and sardines becoming a large source of income for the Algarve. The old quarter of Olhao brims with Moorish-style houses, square and whitewashed with flat terraced roofs and boxed chimneys. The church of Nossa Senhora do Roario dates back to the 17th century and the chapel behind it, dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Afelitos, is still the place where the fishermen’s wives gather during stormy weather to pray for their husbands. The long, delightful promenade is very attractive with the Jardim Pescador do Olhanense gardens. The fish market on the waterfront is Olhao’s main draw. It is buzzy and quaint and sells honey, chickens, a huge array of local produce as well as many types of fish. There are fabulous, atmospheric cafes and restaurants overlooking the colourful boats moored along the waterfront in the marina and the sandy beaches of Armona and Culatra.
Small ferry boats take tourists to the islands of the Rio Formosa for beach days and fabulous picnics and lunches. Ilha da Culatra is beautiful and perfect for snorkelling and diving. Ilha do Farol is at the area at the western end of Culatra with a lighthouse. Ilha da Armona is the nearest to Olhao and boasts a few fish restaurants as well as a gorgeous, golden sandy beach. The islands are especially beautiful at sunset. Tavira Island is further along the coast and again is lovely. You can take a ferry ride across the River Gilao. Praia do Barril is reached by a 1km pretty track or a cosy train ride once you have crossed the water. The town of Tavira is beautiful with charming, narrow streets lined with cute cafes and decked with flags and colourful flowers. Tavira lies along the slow-flowing Gilao River and is a delightful mix of traditional Portuguese heritage with Moorish influences. Many restaurants serve delicious meals, plus there is a myriad of decorative churches.
You should also head back into Faro Old Town for an afternoon or evening, entering through the town’s 11th century Arab gateway, Arco da Vila, the oldest horseshoe arch in the country. The old town is a charming labyrinth of pretty narrow streets. The Manuel Bivar Gardens are very pretty, and the Municipal Museum is an interesting find to enjoy many archaeological items.

THE REGION
Estoi is a fascinating little town hidden away a few kilometres from the Algarve coastline. It makes for a perfect home base while exploring the region, although there is not much going on in the village itself.
Estoi is simple and picturesque, with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and terracotta roofs. You can begin your exploration of the region’s history right here with the Palácio de Estoi, an exquisite rose-coloured rococo palace which is open to the public and nowadays run as a hotel.
Close by there are also the ruins of a Roman villa dating all the way back to the 2nd century AD. But most of what you’ll be doing in the village of Estoi is relaxing and looking on as local life goes around you, as well as travelling to explore the Algarve on your own terms.
ABOUT THE ALGARVE
Though most people tend to see the Algarve as all about the beaches and a holiday on the Med, there’s far much more to it than that.
But while you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Algarve, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesQuinta do Rio is ideal for a family holiday. The pool is delightful, and the villa is very spacious. Olhao is lovely and offers the opportunity to visit the lovely islands of the Ria Formosa in little wooden ferry boats.
You can explore the wonders of the Ria Formosa Nature Park by renting bicycles. There are dedicated cycle routes you can try out such as the Ecovia Litoral Algarve or the Great Route of the Via Algarviana. You can rent bikes from as little as one hour or more than three days. Another way of exploring the nature park is to kayak. You will have the chance to explore the channels and marshes and even stop to observe the birds and other animals.
Tavira is lovely and very family-friendly, with children welcome at all the charming restaurants. You can visit the spectacular beach on Tavira Island or travel to Pego do Inferno with its stunning natural waterfall. You can spend the day listening to the water cascading over the rocks and playing of the small pebbled beach.
Ilha Deserta is one of the most beautiful of the Ria Formosa islands. You can take a speed boat from Faro Old Town or an organised boat trip from Olhao to explore Ilha Deserta. There are many opportunities for boat trips from Olhao, including dolphin watching and sunset trips.
Centro Ciencia Viva do Algarve is a cute little science museum with many interactive experiments to try with the help of the English speaking guides. It is very cheap to visit and great fun.
If you really want to visit a water park while you are away, the Algarve has four of them. Splash & Slide, Aqualand, Aquashow and Atlantic Park are all good fun if you are prepared for a bit of a drive.
