Location
About the surrounding area of Villa Rocha de PraiaThe villa is beautifully located in the Carvoeiro area of the Algarve. A peaceful, traditional Portuguese resort town, Carvoeiro is perfect for families and those who love to be by the sea. The town is made up of whitewashed houses with pops of colour that cascades gently down sandstone cliffs. A fishing village called Ferragudo, which has many famous fresh fish restaurants, is just 1km from the holiday villa.
The area is known for its idyllic golden sand beaches – two of the beaches nearby are Praia Grande and Caneiros. A beautiful, hidden cove, Caneiros has a dramatic backdrop of ochre cliffside and dazzling azure sea. There is a popular restaurant nearby and sunbeds to relax on. Praia Grande has golden sand that stretches as far as the eye can see and a laid back ambience. Sea kayaking is a popular activity in the Algarve, as well as swimming and snorkelling.
Around the Algarve, there are a multitude of world-class golf courses, often by the beach or the lagoons. Golfers can enjoy the fresh sea air and amazing views as they check out legendary courses like Vale do Lobo, which was designed by British golfer Henry Cotton.
The Golden Triangle of the Algarve is home to many luxury resorts and picturesque places. Take a gentle drive to gorgeous Almancil and soak up some culture at the Church of São Lourenço – its white exteriors hide an array of amazing blue azulejo tiles inside. The Baroque church dates back to 1730. Nearby, the cultural centre houses a variety of art exhibitions and often hosts musical performances.
Take a boat trip to go dolphin spotting, an unforgettable experience for the whole family. The dolphins are curious and interested in humans, so sometimes up to 50 of the wild mammals can be seen. Some companies even bring a marine biologist, so guests can learn all about the dolphins.
Another area to explore nearby is Vilamoura, a resort town with a beautiful marina full of million-dollar yachts and many fine restaurants. Boat trips can be taken around the Algarve from here. Sample some Portuguese fare such as Caldeirada, a seafood stew made from white fish, oily fish and local clams and mussels. Caldo Verde, a healthy and hearty soup made from collard greens, fried potatoes, eggs and parsley is a tasty choice. Finish it all with some pastels de nata, the famous egg custard tarts dusted with cinnamon.

THE REGION
Portimão is the largest city in the western Algarve and was traditionally a centre for shipbuilding, sardine fishing and fish processing. Today, most of that industry has been replaced by tourism, leisure and retail, leaving Portimão as a large and residential city. Perhaps the most attractive part of the town is the riverfront which runs from the marina to beyond the road bridge. There are several squares along this stretch, which become increasingly less touristy as you head away from the marina.
Of course, Portimão is probably best known for the fantastic beach of Praia da Rocha. Located about 3 km south of the town, this is one of the most impressive stretches of sand on the Algarve coast. Take a trip up the Rio Arade and explore the local area, or get out and active in the sunshine. Our pick of the best properties to stay in Portimão are perfect bases whether you're simply here for a beach holiday or you plan to explore further afield.
ABOUT THE ALGARVE
Though most people tend to see the Algarve as all about the beaches and a holiday on the Med, there’s far much more to it than that. There’s actually a load of fascinating culture and history, superb cuisine and enthralling adventures to be had, though we’d be the first to admit that the beaches are pretty special too, with lots of sand, spectacle and wonderfully clean water.
But while you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Algarve, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

From strolling along the sand to building their own forts, there’s plenty of fun to be had.
A water park visit is perfect for kids of all ages – take a trip to Aquapark, which boasts the Freefall waterslide, which is the highest in Europe. There is a water coaster and a speed race slide ideal for teenagers. Little ones will love the dedicated mini water park - there is something for everyone here. The wave pool is perfect for relaxing in after all the thrilling watercoasters.
Another adrenaline-based activity fantastic for kids of all ages is go-karting - in Portimão there is a world-renowned centre called the Kartódromo Internacional de Algarve. With three different race tracks that stretch over 1.5km in length, the go-karts can reach a top speed of 160km/hour.
