Perched high and solitary on a stunning cliffside overlooking the azure Atlantic Ocean, Casa Cabanas is an exquisite seven-bedroom retreat generously accommodating 15 guests. Spread over three floors, this Algarve getaway was designed by renowned Portuguese architect Frederico Valsassina and is the epitome of a coastal haven, complete with direct access to surfing beaches and scenic surrounds.

Entering the villa on its central floor, guests are greeted by spacious interiors made sleek by minimalist design and bright by panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows ushering in floods of natural light – hereby establishing Casa Cabanas's characteristic blend of architectural sophistication and oceanic beauty. Immediately, guests will find an L-shaped living and dining room which also incorporates an open-plan kitchen. With plush sofas just waiting to be sunk into, expansive dining table, and tasteful touches of modern décor, this space with its seamless interconnection to the terrace and swimming pool is the throbbing hub of the house.

The open-plan kitchen comes complete with a range of modern appliances and ample counterspace, making it ideal for culinary enthusiasts. Whether you’re tossing together a summer salad or preparing a holiday feast for family and friends, this fully equipped kitchen is primed to source the delicious meals over which unforgettable memories are made.

On this central level guests will find the first three of the villa’s seven well-appointed bedrooms. These include two bedrooms boasting double beds and ensuites, as well as a twin bedroom suite featuring two single beds and an ensuite shower bathroom. Descending the stairs to the lower level reveals another living room including a TV and games and access to the garden. The lower level also includes a double bedroom with queen-sized bed and shower bathroom, and a twin bedroom suite including two single beds, ensuite, and garden access. Two sofa beds on this floor provide the opportunity to sleep a further four guests.

Returning up the stairs to the upper level reveals another spacious TV and lounge area opening onto a panoramic terrace. Here guests will find the master bedroom complete with closet area, shower ensuite and terrace access. The top floor also boasts a triple bedroom suite ideal for children with three single beds, shower ensuite and roman bath. This level is made complete by a separate office/workstation perfectly suited to anyone who still needs to dash off the odd work email while on holiday.

Tastefully furnished with a raft of comforts and amenities, each bedroom is a private and restful retreat. However, it is the villa’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle and stunning exterior spaces that make this property a unique coastal experience. Immerse yourself via the roman steps in the opulent infinity pool, or set yourself up on a sun lounger on any of the various terraces and al fresco dining settings to enjoy this villa’s unbeatable views.

Floating serenely on the headland overlooking Praia das Cabanas Velhas, Casa Cabanas offers unrivalled views across the Atlantic Ocean and along the serrated Algarve coastline.

For the adventure seeker the area offers innumerable hiking and bicycle tracks which wind through the undulating scenery. Make sure to check out the stunning ruins at neighbouring Forte de Almaden and for those with an itch to escape dry land, the villa’s direct access to convenient beaches makes for a quick and relaxing escape at any time of day

The village of Salema (8-minute drive, 20-minute cycle) is one of the few communities that has a small indigenous fishing fleet of traditional colourful boats, still launched from the beach (now with the help of a tractor) to catch snapper, mackerel, sardines and octopus that you can taste fresh off the grill at local restaurants.

The wonderful city of Lagos is just 15 km away (20-minute drive). There you can find sandy beaches stretching down the cliffs for miles. The region’s stunning caves and rock outcrops along the shore provide excellent opportunity for exploration. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a private cove all to yourself. These caves and pristine snorkelling spots can also be accessed via boat trips from Lagos which often include the bonus of dolphin sightings!

If you want to do more than just lie on the beach the Old Town is fantastic to experience by day with its range of restaurants, bars, cafes and activities such as golf, tennis courts, spas, horseback riding, and boat hire. Information-hungry visitors should be sure to take a tour of the city’s walls, which date back to the Romans and connect nine towers and seven gates. Don’t forget to buy some honey and figs too! By night Lagos is just as lively, with a host of renown hotspots where you can dance the night away.

Carrapateira (30-minute drive) is a tranquil, pretty, spread-out village. Its two beaches with strong swells attract a hippy, surf-dude crowd. The coast is wild, with copper-coloured and ash-grey cliffs speckled with yellow and green shrubbery blooming out of creamy white sand.

Cape St. Vincent (30-minute drive) is the southern-most part of Europe. This wind blasted and storm pounded headland boasts a lighthouse that can be seen from 60 miles away, and an interesting museum. You will see the most spectacular sunsets at nearby Sagres (not to mention its historical fortress), best washed down with a Sagres beer!

There are also several very impressive golf courses close to Luz (14-minute drive). Boavista is an 18-hole championship course and Gold Santo Antonio is another par 71, 18-hole course set within Parque da Floresta.

The Algarve is also an ideal region for hot air balloon flights (bookable from Lagos) because of its 300 days of sunshine and absence of clouds. They offer breath-taking views from the air, taking you over rolling hills and valleys.

THE REGION

Salema and its picturesque surroundings are full of hidden gems and old school charm, making it the perfect coastal escape from your busy everyday life. This endlessly charming little fishing village in western Algarve has it all: locally sourced seafood, kid-friendly beaches and a fabulous location just outside the National Park of Southwest Alentejo, in an area of unspoilt natural beauty completely different from that on the other end of the coast.

In the marina you can still spot local fishermen taking out their colourful little boats in the morning, and wandering around town you’ll come across great and homely restaurants where you can feast on their catch.

After a few long afternoons lounging on the secluded beaches, swimming in the sea and trying your windsurfing skills, you’ll learn that there isn’t much to do in Salema but taking it easy, and that’s just the way we like it.

ABOUT THE ALGARVE

Though most people tend to see the Algarve as all about the beaches and a holiday on the Med, there’s far much more to it than that.

But while you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Algarve, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Kids

Best Suited For: Teens
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Casa Cabanas's expansive garden, swimming pool, table tennis table, games room and direct beach access makes it an oasis for fun-loving teens. But outside the villa there is no shortage of options for entertaining the younger ones either.

However, due to a low wall separating the villa grounds from a cliff edge, we would recommend Casa Cabanas is more suited for children outside the ages of 0-12.

Salema and Vila do Bispo has lots to offer families with teens. An unmissable treat for the whole family is dolphin spotting from nearby Sagres (20-minute drive) with Mar Ilimitado. The young ones are sure to see lots of different species of sea bird and maybe even some whales and porpoises. And if the children are more interested in land-based wildlife, Parque Zoológico de Lagos (20-minute drive) is a good use of a full day. Here you’ll see lots of monkeys, farm animals and be able to get up and close at a petting zoo. There are plenty of places to grab a meal too, so you can pack light.

The sandy beach at Salema (8-minute drive) is gently sloping and ideal for families. A lifeguard service is available during the summer months and the sea water quality is excellent. There are a couple of bars and restaurants in the village, some gift shops and convenience stores.

If the younger ones are full of energy, then day trips to Slide and Splash Water Park (40-minute drive), is recommended (open from the beginning of April to the end of October). Alternately, Aqualand Water Park in Alcantarilha (41-minute drive), is open from June to September and will allow parents to put their feet up in the sun, whilst the little one’s glide down various flumes and slides.

In Lagos (20-minute drive) the quiet sandy coves sandwiched between dramatic cliffs cater to every water sport imaginable, including windsurfing, kayaking, snorkelling and paddleboarding. And when you've had your fill, you can digest your day with some of the best nightlife in the Algarve region.
