Location
About the surrounding area of Estrela Salema TownhouseSalema is so pretty and tranquil, away from it all. Praia de Salema is a Blue Flag beach, so you are assured of clean, azure water and safe bathing with seasonal lifeguard patrol. Either end of the beach is flanked by cliffs of red sandstone and ancient yellow limestone. These limestone rocks are of real interest to fossil hunters and in 2001 dinosaur footprints were discovered in the cliff face.
Close by is the fishing village of Burgau. Like Salema, you will find yourself among the jumble of whitewashed fishermen’s cottages that make up the old village. Little fishing boats will be pulled up, lining the steeply sloped streets which double as slipways and a harbour. It is charming.
Not only do people visit Sagres for the wonderful beer, there are wonderful sunsets. It is the extreme western tip of the Algarve and a region for the adventurous wanting to pit themselves against the wild environments. The dramatic landscape is dominated by nature’s raw power, from raging seas carving into the cliffs to the bracing winds and the intense summer sun. Surfing in the turbulent sea and hiking the cliffside trails is for the thrill-seekers.
Lagos is bustling with activities and nightlife but also historical monuments and architecture. The rocky headland of Ponta da Piedade is outstandingly beautiful. There are boat trips galore to see the amazing coastline, fish, snorkel or even see dolphins.
Golf fans are very lucky in this area with several championship courses nearby. Santo Antonio, Palmares, Espiche and Boavista are all within reach. Santo Antonio also has tennis, a health club and spa.

THE REGION
Salema and its picturesque surroundings are full of hidden gems and old school charm, making it the perfect coastal escape from your busy everyday life. This endlessly charming little fishing village in western Algarve has it all: locally sourced seafood, kid-friendly beaches and a fabulous location just outside the National Park of Southwest Alentejo, in an area of unspoilt natural beauty completely different from that on the other end of the coast.
In the marina you can still spot local fishermen taking out their colourful little boats in the morning, and wandering around town you’ll come across great and homely restaurants where you can feast on their catch.
After a few long afternoons lounging on the secluded beaches, swimming in the sea and trying your windsurfing skills, you’ll learn that there isn’t much to do in Salema but taking it easy, and that’s just the way we like it.
ABOUT THE ALGARVE
Though most people tend to see the Algarve as all about the beaches and a holiday on the Med, there’s far much more to it than that.
But while you’re enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Algarve, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we’ve put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesRight next to the beach is a wonderful location for children. They will spend hours in the sea, playing in the sand and it is very safe being a Blue Flag beach. If you want to take them to other beaches, Praia da Luz is also shallow and safe. Alternatively, you might have thrill-seeking surfer-dudes with you that want the rolling waves to windsurf on! There are many courses you can book along the coast.
The Way Tours is an innovative tourism company in Salema offering private speedboat tours. The sofa inflatable is a great hit with children. They just love bouncing on the waves! You can visit the grottos and cliff jumping can also be on the agenda.
In Praia da Luz you can take an electric mountain bike tour to discover the incredible coastline and see places you would never see. It is absolutely thrilling for older children. OceanBlue Portugal in Burgau can also arrange offroad bike tours, beach and lake paddleboard trips and sea safaris on their catamaran.
From Lagos you can book many boat trips for swimming around coves, snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding or even a water trampolining! There is a children’s zoo and a science centre with lots of interactive displays for children. There are two beautiful garden areas with more games and a pirate ship to play on.

We loved our stay!
Location is amazing! House is beautiful, very spacious and has all amenities including air conditioning. Delicious basket of fruit left for us along with a well stocked fridge of sodas, water, beer and wine! They made us feel extra special with a beautiful display of rose petals and a bottle of champagne, as we were celebrating our anniversary. Very friendly and responsive. We loved our stay!
