Overview
Small Bay Villa is peacefully set into the rugged, green hills overlooking the sea in the town of Calheta on Madeira’s southwest coast. This contemporary holiday home is bright and airy, with almost every room offering beautiful views across the water.
The layout of Small Bay Villa has been designed to maximise its location so close to the sea. Sliding doors in many of the rooms open straight onto the main terrace or balcony, which really brings the outside in.
On the ground floor is a lovely, light open-plan living/dining space with patio doors that lead you out onto the terrace. There’s a large sofa for enjoying family nights watching films on the flat screen television and a dining table that seats up to six people for meals. The kitchen is fully-fitted and well-equipped with all the amenities you could need. A convenient feature is the separate laundry room with washing machine, ironing board and iron.
Also on this floor is the master bedroom, which features a king-size bed, television, ensuite bathroom and terrace access. The most impressive room of all on the ground floor is the spacious games/leisure room. Here you’ll find a casual seating area with television, a table tennis table, table games, an exercise bike and some yoga mats.
Upstairs are the remaining two bedrooms, with both being of a good size. One has a king-size bed, television and private balcony with seating and stunning views. The other bedroom features two single beds and a television. Also on this floor is a well-appointed family bathroom.
The entirety of the outside space is sea-facing and therefore makes the very best of the picturesque surrounding scenery. The terrace is home to a private swimming pool, a selection of sun loungers, a seating area and a portable barbecue. It’s the perfect place to end evenings unwinding with a drink as the sun sets over the sea.

Location
About the surrounding area of Small Bay VillaEnjoying such a privileged position within the small town of Calheta means that amenities are on your doorstep at Small Bay Villa. Within a five-minute drive are restaurants, bars and cafés, with the choice increasing the closer you get to the waterfront area.
Drive five minutes down to the coast and you’ll find one of the few sandy beaches on the island. The sand here was brought in from Morocco, with Calheta being the first place in Madeira to have an artificial beach. The beach is protected by sea walls, making it a laidback place to relax and to go swimming in the calm water. As well as relaxing on a sun lounger and simply listening to the sea lapping the shore, you can also try a variety of watersports. Popular activities include canoeing, scuba diving, waterskiing and windsurfing. Meanwhile, the marina is where you can head out on dolphin and whale-watching boat trips.
Other points of interest close to the seafront include Casa das Mudas, a clifftop museum that showcases some impressive contemporary art. Another fascinating museum can be enjoyed when you visit Engenho da Calheta, a working sugar cane factory that shows you how Madeira rum is made. Hiking is another great activity in this area, with the lush, green hills full of trails to follow. You’ll come across beautiful waterfalls and all sorts of colourful plants that the island is famous for.
Madeira’s capital, Funchal, is just a 40-minute drive away. The highlights here include taking the cable car right to the top of a mountain, strolling around stunning botanical gardens and exploring the city’s old town area.

THE REGION
Calheta, meaning ‘Small Cove’, is where many tourists flock to in order to indulge in beautiful man-made beaches and striking scenery.
This part of Madeira is formed of several municipalities, each with something unique and special to offer. Calheta Village is an ideal place to start especially if you enjoy a stiff drink! An old sugar cane factory still produces one of the world’s most respected white rums – Aguardente…perhaps you want to leave this part of your holiday till late in the evening!
Jardim do Mar is where you will find many of the locals on dawn patrol, taking to the waves and surfing. The waters can both be heavy and flat, making them ideal for abilities of surfer. Akaw!
For lovers of seafood, you should look no further than Paul do Mar. This is a village where most of the fisherman work out of, so you know you’ll be able to find the catch of the day here.
For those who have travelled to Madeira for its inland beauty, then look no further than Arco da Calheta and Prazeres. Within these locations you won’t only be able find some stunning hiking trails, but you’re also likely to stumble across some traditionally styled Parishes and unforgettable views.
ABOUT MADEIRA
The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.
What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).
Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.
Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.
For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!
With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.
But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesSmall Bay Villa is a great place to call home during your holiday in this beautiful part of Madeira. The villa has a very family-friendly layout, and the games/leisure room is sure to be popular with children of any age. As is the swimming pool for splashing about and having fun.
One thing you must do when staying in Calheta is to go on a dolphin and whale-watching trip, which the children will absolutely love. It’s just a five-minute drive down to the marina from where you can jump on a boat and set sail. The crew are friendly and knowledgeable and will point out all the different types of animals along the way. These might include pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins.

Modern but homely
This place is amazing, exactly as advertised, it's a great size, location, it's modern but homely, the pool, the sunset, the facilities absolutely perfect! We stayed here as a couple looking for a nice private affordable place for our honeymoon, we bought our one year old girl who had endless fun in the pool! The house was very safe for her having just learnt to walk she was pattering about most of the holiday and no injuries, phew! The location is great, close to town without being on busy noisey roads, you also don't feel overlooked at all, the house feels very private. 100% recommend, lovely place and really easy, helpful hosts!

This is is great villa furnished to a very high standard
This is is great villa furnished to a very high standard with new big beds and lots of space inside, the table tennis/games room was great and so was constant hot water. The villa is plenty big enough for 6 people. However, we found the outside space a bit small and doesn't get any sun until 2-3 in the afternoon. We had a bit of an issue with next doors BBQ that is right on the wall boundary, it was running for an afternoon/next morning as a wood burner cooking meat, we were totally smoked out and had to go out until they were finished. The host is great though, lovely lady and quick response should you need it. Funchal is around 45 mins away, car is essential

A great family option
Small Bay Villa is a really charming holiday home. We found it had everything we needed for a great stay. The kitchen has everything you need and there is a utility room where the owner kindly supplied us with washing powders. The highlight for us were the views from the poolside. At night you can see so many stars and during the morning, you can see a stunning sunrise.
We found it really useful having a car during our stay. The villa is accessed up a steep and winding road, but there is a good-sized private parking space.
Calheta and the rest of the Island is really really pretty! -
Amazing views! *****
Stunning views from the bedrooms and balcony.
The kitchen is completely equipped and the villa was very clean!
It feels very private between the bedrooms on the top floor and bottom floor, very comfy beds as well!
The heated pool was an added bonus for the March weather.
