Location
About the surrounding area of Villa do SupremaSurrounded by the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morroco sits the island of Madeira. At 35 miles long and 13 miles wide, the island is definitely not the largest found this side of the Atlantic, but it enjoys a privileged position with a mild year-round climate making it a popular holiday destination.
Villa do Suprema can be found on the south coast of Madeira in the town of Ponta do Sol. Translated into English as the 'Point of Sun', it is rumoured that this town receives more sunshine than anywhere else on the island! The town is a popular spot to enjoy seafood thanks to its restaurants serving a range of delicacies, from muscles to Madeira's famed Espada or black scabbardfish, making this town a seafood lovers paradise. Like many of the other beaches across Maderia, Praia da Ponta do Sol is home to deep black shores thanks to the island's volcanic rock, making going to the beach a somewhat unique experience!
Around a 30-minute drive east of Ponta do Sol you will arrive at Funchal, Madeira's capital city. Funchal's Old Town is always popular with visitors thanks to the number of sights, restaurants and bars in the area. The main shopping streets of Rua do Aljube, Rua da Carreira and Rua Dr Fernao Ornelas are great for a bit of retail therapy. Or if you are looking to learn more about the history and culture of the city, then the Cathedral of Funchal is certainly a place to visit. Built during the peak of Portuguese power in the 16th century, the cathedral was built to be a symbol of Portuguese power and prosperity. In particular, the altarpiece at the cathedral is simply stunning; with gilt woodwork, small sculptures and oil painting, it really is a sight to behold.
Travelling west from Villa do Suprema and you reach the town of Ponta do Pargo on the western tip of Madeira. Known for its striking high cliffs and strategically positioned lighthouse, this majestic town is a beautiful place to visit. From the town, you can visit the magnificent Gardanta Funda Waterfall. Accessed via walking trails from Ponta do Pargo, this waterfall is simply stunning and offers a wonderful viewpoint from which visitors can admire the views of the surrounding cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.
If you enjoying hiking, then a trip up Pico Ruivo is a must-do whilst visiting Madeira. At 1,862 metres high, this extinct volcano is the highest peak in Madeira and offers spectacular views from the top - if you are lucky enough to reach it on a clear day. One of the most popular paths starts at Achada do Teixeria. Taking around an hour and a half and with a climb of 300 metres, this hike takes walkers through stunning trails through the hillside. And when you reach the top, the effort will certainly be worth it!

THE REGION
Calheta, meaning ‘Small Cove’, is where many tourists flock to in order to indulge in beautiful man-made beaches and striking scenery.
This part of Madeira is formed of several municipalities, each with something unique and special to offer. Calheta Village is an ideal place to start especially if you enjoy a stiff drink! An old sugar cane factory still produces one of the world’s most respected white rums – Aguardente…perhaps you want to leave this part of your holiday till late in the evening!
Jardim do Mar is where you will find many of the locals on dawn patrol, taking to the waves and surfing. The waters can both be heavy and flat, making them ideal for abilities of surfer. Akaw!
For lovers of seafood, you should look no further than Paul do Mar. This is a village where most of the fisherman work out of, so you know you’ll be able to find the catch of the day here.
For those who have travelled to Madeira for its inland beauty, then look no further than Arco da Calheta and Prazeres. Within these locations you won’t only be able find some stunning hiking trails, but you’re also likely to stumble across some traditionally styled Parishes and unforgettable views.
ABOUT MADEIRA
The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.
What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).
Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.
Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.
For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!
With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.
But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesVilla do Suprema is well equipped for families to have a wonderful time in Madeira. The two twin bedrooms, one even with its own en-suite bathroom, will suit siblings or friends to share, while older children would relish the chance to sleep in one of the double bedrooms. And for the youngest guests, a high chair and cot can be provided, so they can sleep comfortably along with the rest of the family.
The private swimming pool will provide hours of entertainment for the kids and, thanks to the sun loungers surrounding the pool, adults can safely monitor the children while they relax in the sunshine. And when some time out of the sun is needed, the covered outdoor lounge provides the perfect spot for an afternoon siesta, allowing kids to enjoy the views and fresh air under the protection of the shade. Or inside in the living area, with Wi-Fi and television, kids can chill out on the sofas watching a film and keep up with their friends back home and post their latest holiday snaps onto social media courtesy of the complimentary Wi-Fi.
Praia da Ponta do Sol, the nearest beach to Villa do Suprema, is less than 1 km away. Like most of Madeira's beaches, the beach is home to black, pebbly shores thanks to the island's volcanic rock. Playing on the black shores of Madeira's beaches is surely a unique experience for many children, and with the chance to take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean, kids will have a ball here!
Ponta do Sol is home to a selection of restaurants, with many focusing on the seafood caught in the area - be sure to try Madeira's famed Espada or black scabbardfish while you are here! If seafood isn't your fancy, then a selection of restaurants do have more familiar flavours available to suit little ones.
Kids wanting to feel like pirates will love a trip on the Santa Maria de Colombo. Modelled after Christopher Colombus's ship, this boat tour offers families the chance to go whale and dolphin watching (depending on the season) as well as the opportunity to jump into the refreshing Atlantic Ocean when the ship drops anchor.
A trip to Porto Moniz is great for the whole family. Not only is this coastal town home to Madeira's, albeit small, aquarium, but visitors here also have the opportunity to swim in the natural lava pools! A trip the aquarium allows kids to be both educated and entertained, as they learn more about the local marine life while having fun spotting all the exciting sea animals! The natural saltwater pools at Porto Moniz offer the unique experience of swimming in the crystal clear waters of the natural rock pools formed by the volcanic lava that will surely excite the kids! For little ones, there is a children's swimming pool and play area that is great fun! And for added convenience, there are changing rooms with lockers for storing personal items as well as a snack bar and sun loungers for hire during the summer months.
