Great Value

Boasting a fantastic setting within a hillside residential area and overlooking the sea at Calheta on Madeira’s southwest coast is contemporary Villa Jasminum. This holiday home has been transformed from an old farmhouse cottage into a luxurious place to enjoy family time.

A chic, minimalist style runs throughout the villa, with beautiful attention to detail in every room. The quality furnishings and facilities make Villa Jasminum a comfortable holiday base that fully caters to your needs. There’s also plenty of outside space to enjoy, with several different areas in which to soak up the wonderful sea and countryside views.

On the ground floor is where you’ll find the great living/dining space, which is open-plan and features patio doors that open directly onto the outside space. The lounge area has a comfortable corner sofa and a television for enjoying some relaxed downtime. By more patio doors is the dining table that seats up to six people. The modern kitchen makes mealtimes quick and easy, with a range of amenities on offer. It’s a very stylish space and features a central island for treating yourself to a relaxed breakfast before enjoying days out.

Upstairs are four lovely, air-conditioned bedrooms. Two feature a king-sized bed, television and ensuite shower room each, as well as sharing access to a balcony.  The other two bedrooms have two single beds and a television each. Serving these two bedrooms is a spacious and well-appointed family bathroom.

A particularly impressive feature of the villa is the rooftop fitness room which is surrounded by a terrace that offers some truly breathtaking sea views. Inside the fitness room is a range of exercise equipment, including weights, a treadmill and a cross trainer.

The fifth bedroom with king-size bed, television and ensuite shower room can be found on the first floor of the annexe. On the ground floor of the annexe is a large games room with billiards table, television and a selection of table games.

Outside next to the annexe is a large, covered barbecue area with a built-in barbecue and dining table. The main feature is the large, private swimming pool. A selection of sun loungers and some outdoor seating provide the perfect spots to soak up the laidback atmosphere. Also within the walled outside space are charming areas of garden, giving you your own slice of Madeira countryside.

Just a short walk or drive away from the villa are several cafés, restaurants and bars. An even greater choice can be found down by the waterfront, which is less than 10 minutes away from the villa by car. This area is where most of the town’s lively activity happens. Dolphin and whale-watching boats regularly leave from the marina, giving you the chance to spot a variety of beautiful marine life.

By the marina is one of the few sandy beaches that can be found in Madeira. Generally, the beaches on the island are volcanic and feature black sand or pebbles. Calheta was the first place to have an artificial beach when sand was brought in from Morocco. It’s a nice place to enjoy a few hours by the sea, with the water here being mostly calm and safe for swimming. It’s also perfect for a range of watersports, such as windsurfing, waterskiing, scuba diving and canoeing. You can hire sun loungers to simply lie back and let the sounds of the sea wash over you.

Also down by the coast is Casa das Mundas, a clifftop museum that’s full of fantastic contemporary art. Another place to tick off your list when enjoying a day out in the town is Engenho da Calheta. Take a tour around this working sugar cane factory to find out how Madeira rum is made.

It’s a 40-minute drive to Madeira’s capital city, Funchal. There’s plenty to see and do here, including several botanical gardens and a cable car that takes you right up a mountain for spectacular sea views. Also be sure to visit the old town area for a dose of history.

THE REGION

Calheta, meaning ‘Small Cove’, is where many tourists flock to in order to indulge in beautiful man-made beaches and striking scenery.

This part of Madeira is formed of several municipalities, each with something unique and special to offer. Calheta Village is an ideal place to start especially if you enjoy a stiff drink! An old sugar cane factory still produces one of the world’s most respected white rums – Aguardente…perhaps you want to leave this part of your holiday till late in the evening!

Jardim do Mar is where you will find many of the locals on dawn patrol, taking to the waves and surfing. The waters can both be heavy and flat, making them ideal for abilities of surfer. Akaw!

For lovers of seafood, you should look no further than Paul do Mar. This is a village where most of the fisherman work out of, so you know you’ll be able to find the catch of the day here.

For those who have travelled to Madeira for its inland beauty, then look no further than Arco da Calheta and Prazeres. Within these locations you won’t only be able find some stunning hiking trails, but you’re also likely to stumble across some traditionally styled Parishes and unforgettable views.

ABOUT MADEIRA

The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.

What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).

Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.

Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.

For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!

With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Reviews

  • Very high standard

    on 04/04/2020

This is a high quality villa with excellent facilities. There are shops nearby for essentials but a car is necessary.

  • Simply stunning villa and location

    on 02/06/2019

We stayed here during the end of May, and can not fault anything about this villa. Wonderful welcome on arrival, they had also arranged car hire for us which was so easy on arrival at the airport. The villa has been restored to an excellent standard throughout, our kids loved the pool and pool table. Amazing sitting outside in the evening as the sun sets with a view to die for. Oh and you have to get steak from the shop at the bottom of the hill and cook them on the BBQ. We will be back next year. We were a family of 5, children 10, 14. & 16 and we also took my in-laws overs.

  • Perfect for us

    on 05/03/2019

We were three small families with one toddler each and the house was perfect for us. Really good spaces for the kids to crawl around and perfect with many bathrooms. The pool and outside area was so nice for socializing. Also the excellent host that was very helpful all through the booking, before the trip and during. We can really recommend this house and host

  • Perfect family friendly villa

    on 21/02/2019

This was our first trip to Madeira and we could not have been more happy with Villa Jasminum as a choice - the location is great for exploring the island, located in a quiet little village 5 minutes drive above Calheta beach. It is a short walk to the local supermarket. The villa itself is stunning - brand new, beautifully designed and incredibly well equipped for a rental villa. The pool and outdoor area is beautiful, we ended up making BBQs here watching the Sunset almost every night. The view from the gym is unbeatable and the games room complete with pool table and playstation is a fantastic addition for older kids and adults alike in the evening or during the occasional rain shower. The history of the villa itself makes it all the more magical. Isobel was a wonderful host and could not have been more helpful during our stay. We would definitely recommend Villa Jasminum to anyone and hope we will make it back very soon.
