At the heart of a picturesque residential area close to the centre of Funchal, Madeira’s capital city, is elegant and spacious Casa Frutuoso. This holiday home is a restful place to return to after days exploring the local area, with outside space that offers total peace and privacy.

The interior of Casa Frutuoso provides a mix of modern conveniences and traditional touches for a family-friendly feel. Spacious rooms feature both classic wood furnishings and an overall contemporary design, making this an enjoyably warm and comfortable villa.

Stairs from the entrance hall bring you to the ground-floor, open-plan living space. This stunning area boasts an abundance of windows, including a beautiful stained-glass feature, which floods it with light and a feeling of the outside brought in. There are two large and very comfortable sofas in the lounge area, with a television and fireplace providing both entertainment and warmth on cooler evenings. Glass doors give you direct access to the outside space. The dining area features a classic wood table and chairs that’s ideally positioned next to the fully-equipped and modern kitchen, which also has a breakfast bar. Leading off from the kitchen is a convenient laundry room. Also on the ground floor is an air-conditioned bedroom with double bed, ensuite bathroom and outside access.

On the first floor are another three air-conditioned bedrooms. All have balcony access, with two of the bedrooms having a double bed each, with one also enjoying its own ensuite bathroom. One bedroom features two single beds, making it ideal for children. Also on the first floor is a lovely family bathroom.

The lower-ground floor is where you’ll find the fifth and final bedroom, which has two double beds. It has use of the well-appointed shower room also on this floor. A fantastic extra feature on the lower-ground floor is the large games room. It comes with a billiards table, table football and floor mats that are ideal for yoga or pilates.

The outside space is screened and very private, with an attractive terrace that’s home to a veranda. Under its shade is an outdoor dining table, built-in barbecue, several sun loungers and a hammock. The highlight of the terrace is the large, private swimming pool.

Just a short walk from the villa is a range of restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets. As you get closer to the heart of Funchal city centre, an even bigger selection of all amenities and attractions opens up.

If you’re looking to spend a day by the sea, there are a few Lido's on offer. They feature beaches that are volcanic in nature and which have black sand rather than golden. Barreirinha Beach Lido has a swimming pool, changing rooms, solarium and access to a small, pebbled stretch of sea to enjoy, with the opportunity to hire sun loungers and use facilities such as changing rooms and lockers. The sea here is mostly calm, so it’s perfect for safe swimming.

A fun experience that all the family will love is taking the Santa Maria de Colombo Boat trip. Hop on board a replica of Christopher Columbus’ ship and sail along the coast for the chance to spot dolphins and whales. Whilst on the boat you can watch galleon crew going about their usual duties. And if you take a trip in summer, the boat will more than likely drop anchor and allow you to cool off in the sea.

Other great things to do in Funchal include taking the cable car all the way up to the picturesque area of Monte, taking in stunning sea and city views. You’ll also finish the journey by a beautiful botanical garden that’s well worth a stroll around. Make sure to visit Funchal old town too. Here you’ll find plenty of narrow, cobbled streets to explore, many of which are lined with ancient buildings. One of the most impressive is 15th-century Corpo Santo Chapel.

THE REGION

Funchal is the largest city on the island of Madeira and is encapsulated by Pico Ruivo and its neighbouring mountains, which look as if they have been seamlessly carved into the skyline by a Lusitanian God.

There is no better spot to start your holiday than in the Old Town, which illustrates its personality though street art, architecture and busy local businesses. There are many fine eateries, botanical gardens, a cathedral and impressive museums. Perhaps hop on the Madeira Cable Car as one of your first activities, as this will give you a great idea of the islands size.

Many flock Funchal in order to enjoy the Atlantic Coastline. This is home to its prominent harbour, where hundreds of boats and yachts, some of which enable visitors to embark on a magical sea voyage, can be found. Funchal really is a destination for lovers of the sea; as there are renowned surfing points, as well as being a great place to spot some whales.

Madeirans are also notorious for their elaborate festivals. If you’re travelling during the New Year, you will be treated to one of the world’s biggest Firework Festivals…a dazzling sight! During late February & early Mrach, you are able to witness Carnival and the streets of Funchal are lit with parades and festivities. If that’s not enough for you; the Atlantic Festival International Fireworks Competition, Wine Festival and Christmas are all noteworthy dates for anyone visiting Funchal.

There are some incredible villas on the island and we believe that we have done a great job finding them for you. Have a browse and let us know what you think.

ABOUT MADEIRA

The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.

What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).

Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.

Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.

For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!

With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Teens Ideal for Xmas/NY

Casa Frutuoso is a fantastic base for a family holiday, with plenty to keep children of all ages happy and entertained. Older children in particular will love having their own spacious bedroom and balcony access. The bedroom with two single beds is especially ideal for the younger ones to share. Everyone will enjoy a splash in the swimming pool and trying a range of fun activities in the games room.

One of the most popular family-friendly things to do here is take the cable car from Funchal up to the pretty area of Monte. The views over the sea and city are simply breathtaking, and the children will love spotting all the animals that live on the mountains as you ascend. The ride takes around 20 minutes and finishes at a beautiful botanical garden.

  • A lovely villa with all amenities you could requre

    on 03/03/2019

Very large but homely Villa, excellent amenities throughout, lovely swimming pool and a sun trap for most of the day. Close to shops and bars, 5 mins in car down hill to Funchal. Narrow side street entrance to Villa easily navigated. 7 of us really enjoyed our stay, awesome views from bedroom terraces. Very friendly and helpful owners. Highly recommend this Villa.

  • An amazing house ! Larger then its seens on the photos. Petronella took good care of ! Love it !

We had a wonderful stay in Casa Frutuoso. We celebrate my birthday and was 8 adults and 4 children ( 8, 6, 3 and 0 years old).Lots of space and a lovely pool. We get it heat to 26 degrees because it was in february and it was nice and the children could stay very long in the pool. Close to Funchal and beatyful in the evening with all lights on the mountain. We Rent cars and that is nesseserly if you dont want to walk long.

  • Did what it said on the box, awesome well equipped villa , easy access to Funchal , car recommended.

Lovely Villa with everything you need, BBQ was a bit fiddly to light and keep burning initially.

  • Wonderful large family villa; many memories made in Madeira

    on 19/08/2018

Wonderful villa holiday. 11 people spanning 4 generations of my family age between 2yrs and 82 yrs stayed there comfortably for almost 3 weeks. Very spacious homely feel. Great kitchen and outside space both of which were well used. Pool was great and grandchildren loved it. Child friendly accommodation with stair gates and cots and high chairs made available. Basement games room well used by the boys/men in the party. Main bedrooms lovely with fantastic views from the balcony. Petronella was very welcoming and answered all our queries throughout the holiday. We were very grateful for contact with her especially given we arrived a day late and quite late into the evening and by ferry! She was still there to meet us. We had to land in Porto Santo, a neighbouring island as the plane after 2 attempts couldn’t land in Funchal. Apparently it does happen occasionally because of cross winds and we were unlucky. Eventually landed in Porto santo and spent the day there in an all inclusive resort arranged by easy jet before catching ferry to Funchal in the evening. The ferry was a lovely trip and I would recommend it but not after 36 hrs travelling and waiting in airport terminal for several hours for easyJet to decide what to do with 200 stranded passengers! Can’t fault our holiday at this lovely villa. One comment that might be helpful to point out is whilst the basement bedroom was lovely and particularly for older kids, the bathroom was not really up to the standard of the other 3 lovely bathrooms on the upper floors. Madeira was beautiful and the villa was only 10-15 minutes drive from centre. Good bus service but would recommend a car. We had 2 cars and used them daily. Many memories made here: Reid’s cccktails; Monte cable car ride and toboggan run; lido days; Beautiful beach at machico; lavada walks; very steep climbs in first gear up to some beautiful views. Best “last day” of a holiday ever! We will definitely be back to This beautiful island.

  • Perfect for us

The villa's description says it all, really. It's very spacious, well-kept, and clean. Everything works. Our introduction, from Petronella, covered everything we wanted to know, and she replied quickly to later questions.
