Jump in the car and you’ll find an even wider range of restaurants, bars and cafés within a 10 minute drive.
The harbour at Funchal is always a lively place to visit – and you’ll find plenty to see and do here. There’s the CR7 Museum that’s dedicated to probably Madeira’s most famous football player, Cristiano Ronaldo, and a small casino for whenever you fancy a flutter. For a dose of history, visit 17th-century São Tiago Fortress. This impressive building is also now home to a contemporary art museum with Portuguese works on show.

Another must-visit is the old town, or Zona Velha, as it’s referred to by the locals. Here you’ll find a network of narrow, cobbled streets that are lined with old buildings. Many of these are churches, with 15th-century Corpo Santo Chapel being one of the oldest and prettiest.

THE REGION
Funchal is the largest city on the island of Madeira and is encapsulated by Pico Ruivo and its neighbouring mountains, which look as if they have been seamlessly carved into the skyline by a Lusitanian God.
There is no better spot to start your holiday than in the Old Town, which illustrates its personality though street art, architecture and busy local businesses. There are many fine eateries, botanical gardens, a cathedral and impressive museums. Perhaps hop on the Madeira Cable Car as one of your first activities, as this will give you a great idea of the islands size.
Many flock Funchal in order to enjoy the Atlantic Coastline. This is home to its prominent harbour, where hundreds of boats and yachts, some of which enable visitors to embark on a magical sea voyage, can be found. Funchal really is a destination for lovers of the sea; as there are renowned surfing points, as well as being a great place to spot some whales.
Madeirans are also notorious for their elaborate festivals. If you’re travelling during the New Year, you will be treated to one of the world’s biggest Firework Festivals…a dazzling sight! During late February & early Mrach, you are able to witness Carnival and the streets of Funchal are lit with parades and festivities. If that’s not enough for you; the Atlantic Festival International Fireworks Competition, Wine Festival and Christmas are all noteworthy dates for anyone visiting Funchal.
There are some incredible villas on the island and we believe that we have done a great job finding them for you. Have a browse and let us know what you think.
ABOUT MADEIRA
The island of Madeira can be found south west of mainland Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s location, its is considered to have a Mediterranean climate that serves locals and visitors all year round – making it an ideal escape from reality at any point in the year.
What we love Madeira for is its seemingly ongoing festivals! Madeirans have found an excuse to celebrate most things; including film, their natural surroundings and key patron saints. This means that planning a visit during these days and even weeks of commemoration is well worth it (scroll down to see some key dates).
Madeira is divided into several municipals, each with a special offering to those who visit this island. Our favourite two communities are Funchal and Calheta and these are where you will find most of our beautiful villas.
Madeira’s landscape extends much more than a striking coastline. Make sure you pack some hiking boots and venture inland during your stay. With mountainous trails along Vereda do Arieiro, or more countryside appropriate paths like Levada do Risco and waterfall chasing treks like Levada do Caldeirao Verde – this archipelago has everything a keen outdoors person requires.
For those who enjoy either playing or watching sports, you’ll be happy to know Madeira offers so much selection. Madeira is also home to three notable football clubs, so if you’re visiting during the football season and want to see a good quality of football, you have every chance to. Porto Santo Golfe is the island’s renowned golf course. With an 18-hole course (Par 72) overlooking a Galapagos-like backdrop, golf enthusiasts will certainly want a ‘slice’ of the action! Surfers can access some great beaches like Jardim do Mar, Ponta Pequena, Paul do Mar, and Fajã da Ovelha in order to find some swell. Or, if you’re simply looking to recline on a sun lounger and soak up some rays, whilst listening to crystal clear waves break as they hit the shores, you will find plenty of man-made beaches & Lidos created for your leisure!
With a superb climate, close proximity to the coastline, wonderful cuisine, charming locals and astonishing scenery – this is a fabulous holiday choice for families & friends.
But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Madeira, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Delightful cottage in lovely setting
Set in the delightful grounds of a Quinta the cottage is well situated for access into Funchal. It is well furnished and appointed and the owners were most welcoming and helpful

Fabulous, loved it!!
We loved the property; having a pool was a real luxury as we pretty much had it to ourselves the whole stay. Our cottage was lovely, had everything we needed; the grounds were really pretty. We didn't meet the owners until the end of our stay as they were away. A really nice couple who we instantly liked. If we ever go back which I'm sure we will we would definitely stay there again without a doubt. The location is great as it's away from the town but close enough to walk in. An added bonus was that the owners have 2 lovely dogs who we adored as we a huge animal lovers.

Fantastic little hideaway in the centre of Funchal
Funcho Cottage through a door in a wall...all very Harry Potter! It is very magical inside the walls. Peaceful. But...it is a working Quinta! Bananas surround you. The owners live closeby; they greet you and bid you farewell..but are there if you need anything. They are very lovely. You have everything you need. We hired a car but it did not leave the driveway. We walked everywhere. Loads of lovely places to see and lots to do. Restaurants and cafes abound. Don't hesitate to book! You will have a fab time! Good travels.

Truly is an oasis in central Funchal
We had never been to Madeira before and booked Funcho Cottage after much deliberation. We were not disappointed. The cottage is clean, the bed comfortable, the living accomodation is bright and the kitchen well equipped with very good cooking facilities, should you wish to cook. There is even a barbecue. The outdoor area is very spacious and the swimming pool is more than adequate. My husband and I had the full use of the pool to ourselves, very peaceful. We loved seeing the owners dogs, who were very friendly on occasion, and Frank and Buffy are very welcoming, helpful and discreet. It is a short walk down a hill to turn either left into the centre of Funchal and the port area, or right to the hotel strip, the first one on the main road is Reids Hotel, where you can book for a posh tea. There is a super market down the hill too. Turn towards the centre and you get an excellent meal at Kontiki's, steak on the stone, and a good pint at No2 Pub. Overall, an excellent base with peace and quiet, being amongst it all. We had a fab holiday. But, like all holidays in the heat, remember to take the sprays/creams in case you are bitten. We hope to return to this beautiful oasis.

Serendipity
Serendipity is the first word that comes to mind when thinking of our recent stay here. Frank and Buffy have created a wonderful retreat within the grounds of their stunning property. The cottage we stayed in was very well equipped, stylishly appointent and wonderfully clean with thoughtful touches. The pool area was a particular favourite bordered with many flowers and vines. Plenty of space to sit out for breakfast and the mandatory G&T in the evening. You never felt you were in the middle of a buzzing city. When you did want to ventre out of the gated property there it was, the vibrant friendly city of funchal. Great eating places a short walk away, a great bakery just down the hill for your daily bread and the must have custard tarts. All this was topped by the caring approach of Buffy and Frank. There when you needed them and not when you didnt. Fabulous. A rare and special find. Would love to keep this place a secret but that would be really mean to deprive everyone of something that is unique. A special place one had the good fortune to come across. Go there while you can , not going to stay a secret for long. The last word. Serendipity!
