Location
About the surrounding area of Casa VarzeaCasa Varzea is in a prime location for amenities, with the beach, a supermarket, bars, restaurants and the town centre of Esposende all within easy walking distance of the villa. This makes it a perfect base for a family holiday, with little to no travel required to make the most of this beautiful area. Firmly off the tourist trail, you won’t find Esposende in many guidebooks, but don’t let that put you off. This charming town has much to offer, featuring many well-preserved and interesting archaeological sites and attractive areas to explore. The town is provincial in appearance with its riverside, palm-lined boulevard and marinas that are a nod to its fishing heritage.
In the town, you’ll find the popular Maritime Museum and leisure centre, and if you keep heading along the promenade, you’ll reach Esposende beach, a broad stretch of sand backed by low dunes and overlooked by the red metal tower of Esposende lighthouse. The beach is considered one of the finest on the Costa Verde and is a popular and laidback spot known for its quality surfing - and you don’t need to be an expert to have a go! Esposende is a great place to learn to ride your first wave. The breaks produce peaks and hollow waves of around a metre high - perfect for newcomers to the sport- and you won’t normally have to wait your turn, thanks to the sheer size of the beaches in the area and the fact that more experienced surfers tend to head to the more southern resorts. If you get a bit of a taste for surfing while you’re here, you might be interested to know that there are three surf camps in the town, all offering intensive week-long surfing courses, as well as kite-surfing. They also hire stand-up paddleboards, which can be a fun way to get around the calmer estuary waters.
The resort boasts a chain of Blue Flag Beaches, and on the other side of the river mouth, you’ll find the beach of Praia de Ofir; 3km of unspoiled, sand backed dunes surrounded by pine trees. A natural phenomenon of this beautiful beach is the rock formation that emerges from the sea at low tide and is known locally as the horses of Fao.
After a day of sun, sea and surf, head to one of the many bars and restaurants that surround the beach, where you’ll be able to enjoy all manner of local cuisine and refreshments to suit every palate.

ABOUT MINHO
The areas of Minho extend from the Spanish border in the north, south to Porto and east to the mountains of Vila Real. It is a green and fertile area of rolling hills encompassing the great rivers Minho, Lima and Douro, and the National Park of Peneda Geres. The countryside of the region is typified by long, sandy beaches bordered by pine woods, picturesque villages nestling among vine-covered hills, and historic towns such as Amarante, Guimaraes, Barcelos, Ponte de Lima, and Viana do Castelo.
The area encompasses a range of postcard-worthy landscapes and features that could almost be Portugal in microcosm: dreamy river scenes, high mountains, rolling vineyards, beautiful historic towns, dramatic Atlantic beaches, ancient religious foundations and mysterious archaeological sites.
Then there's the bold, sharp and fruity Vinho Verde to consider. This young wine is fashioned from the fruit of kilometres of vineyards that wind along rivers, over foothills and into Minho mountain villages.
But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Minho, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesCasa Varzea is an obvious choice for families who are holidaying in Esposende with young children. The ground floor bedrooms offer peace of mind when it comes to little ones having to navigate the stairs during the night, and the villa is spacious and light throughout, making it easy to manoeuvre from room to room without worrying about trips or falls.
The grounds of the villa are neat and well-maintained, with soft lawns on which to play, a five-a-side football pitch, and a clay tennis court to enjoy, meaning that the kids are sure to find something to keep them amused while you sunbathe! The barbeque terrace is spacious and covered - ideal for protecting little ones from the sun while they eat alfresco with the rest of the family, and when they're not splashing about in the private, heated pool, you can prevent any accidents by using the electric cover when it isn't in use.
If the kids want to chill out indoors after a day of swimming and playing, Casa Varzea is equipped with home comforts, including satellite TV, internet connection, an iPod dock, and a DVD player with a selection of DVDs.
The location of Casa Varzea is ideal if you don't want to have to travel far with very young children, with places to eat and shop just a short walk away, making getting supplies or refreshments quick and stress-free. Of course, no holiday is complete without a trip to the beach if you have children, and luckily the beaches in the region are not only quick and easy to get to, they're also clean and spacious, so you're sure to find an uncrowded spot to enjoy among the dunes or under the shady pines.
Esposende is a relaxed and chilled-out spot for families and many who come here like spending their time meandering along the pretty streets, taking in the history and architecture and enjoying the natural surroundings. One of the best things about holidaying in the region is the wide choice of walks available - suitable for all ages. There are ten marked trails around Esposende, taking you and the family past white sands, dunes, windmills, pine forests and marshes, oak woodlands and farms. Get the kids to look out for otters on your walks, often spotted on the riverbanks, as well as some of the 117 bird species that have been sighted in the area.
If you and the kids would rather explore the area by bike, it's worth knowing that Esposende's tourist office rents out bicycles for free if you hand over your ID. Be sure to ride through the historical centre of the town, past the town hall and granite townhouses to the pillory, a symbol of the town's autonomy.
Casa Varzea of course has its own pool, but an alternative for older children is a visit to Esposende's public pool complex, which can be found on the estuary. There is an indoor pool that generates waves every hour, as well as two outdoor pools which are fed with salt water from the ocean - one for kids and one for serious swimmers!

Super!
Merci!

Excellent
Barbecue, swimming pool, tennis and a soccer court, clearly enough is offered. Especially if you include the time searching for løst tennis balls. Thanks Sergio for the very fast and open communication. Could not have been better.
