The magnificent, contemporary Villa Homem is located in the quiet coastal village of Afife, just ten minutes north of the jewel of the Costa Verde, Viana do Castelo. Afife enjoys a fabulous micro-climate and the perfect beach location. With sea views and just minutes to walk to the silver sands, the location could not be better for those anxious to get in the surf. The captivating Viana do Castelo is north of Porto and close to the border with Spain’s Galicia. It is blessed with an appealing medieval centre, an attractive riverfront and gorgeous beaches. Its old quarter showcases narrow lanes and leafy boulevards brimming with Manueline manors and Rococo palaces. Guests staying at Villa Homem enjoy fabulous days on the beach, trips to beautiful towns and cities, river adventures of the Rio Lima estuary and countryside jaunts in the Lima valley. The hosts of Villa Homem are very happy to organise thrilling watersports adventures, other activities and private chefs or indulgent wellness packages. Villa Homem is a sprawling property with six bedrooms sleeping twelve guests.

The villa is a sleek masterpiece of contemporary architecture designed to be totally integrated with the natural surroundings. Its sensational living spaces face the Atlantic Ocean with astonishing panorama. The outside space is a delight with a superb swimming pool that is ideal for sensitive skins without chlorine.

The villa’s superb living space is located in the single storey section of the villa with beautiful views out to the pool, garden and the sea. A sumptuous corner sofa and trendy chairs sit at one end of the room enjoying the views and perfectly placed to also enjoy the television and the the contemporary log burning stove on cooler evenings. The delightful dining area is at the other end of the room. Next door, the chef’s dream of a kitchen offers the best of appliances and a generous space in which to cook up a storm. A full wall of doors open to the terrace where you can enjoy alfresco dining with a sea view.

The second part of the villa enjoys completely different architecture. On the outside there is natural toned render, concrete blocks and stunning wooden doors and inside, again the walls are whitewashed and very striking against rich wooden floors and colourful rugs. Most of the bedrooms are all in white with minimalist styling and luxury linens on the beds. Four of the bedrooms enjoy double or kingsize beds and the remainder boast twins. There are five and a half glorious bathrooms in total, most of which are ensuite. They are beautifully tiled, some with vibrant colours in stark contrast to the dazzling white walls and linens. All of the bathrooms are beautifully fitted with a mix of baths and showers. Some of the bedrooms have direct access to the terrace and pool while others are on the upper floor.

Villa Homem enjoys wonderful outdoor space but that ocean will be beckoning you in from the minute you arrive!

Villa Homem is located next to the beach in the lovely village of Afife. It is walking distance to a supermarket for provisions or your hosts will happily arrange food delivery for you. The beach is absolutely fabulous but you can also hike to amazing waterfalls and trek along the mountains. It is a wonderful area for those that love the outdoors. You can ride horses on the beach or in the mountains.

Just south of the villa is the captivating, historic city of Viana do Castelo. The pearly white, neo-Byzantine Santa Luzia Church presides over the city, sitting high on the hilltop in all its majesty. Viana do Castelo’s compact historic centre boasts extravagant religious buildings, charming cafes, elegant plazas, incredible mansions and narrow shopping streets which open onto the banks of the Lima River.

Ponte de Lima is one of the most characterful and picturesque towns of Northern Portugal, on the southern banks of the Lima River. You should definitely make the time to visit. The location has been the main river crossing since the Romans constructed a bridge in 1AD. There is a delightful mix of grand religious buildings, houses from times gone by and pretty plazas. There are interesting museums as well as colourful flower gardens and stunning natural scenery all around. The Ponte do Lima is an excellent centre for adventure activities such as the Ecovia cycling route, kayaking along the Lima River, mountain biking or hiking in the Serra D’Arga or birdwatching in the Lagoas de Bertiandos. You can river bathe in Labruja.

Further south, Braga is regarded as one the main religious centres of Portugal, with the oldest cathedral and many Gothic churches. You will hear a cocophony of different church bells ringing out on the hour! It is the third largest city of Portugal and is a delight to explore. Braga is an enthralling university city and the setting for Bom Jesus do Monte, a fine monument. The historic centre is fully pedestrianised which is great for tourists. There are pretty city gardens, charming plazas and busy shopping streets.

Afife is very close to the Galicia border. If you decide to take a trip into Galicia, Tui is an absolute wonder. It boasts a beautiful historic centre and an excellent range of gourmet dining as well as excellent shops. Tui is located south of the Pontevedra province and sits on the edge of the Minho River, opposite the Portuguese town of Valenca. The towns are connected by a nineteenth century bridge. Valenca do Minho is located on the hillside overlooking the left bank of the Minho and on the main road that links the Spanish Santiago de Compostela with Porto. Tourists flock to the town to buy embroidered tablecloths and sheets, the speciality of the town.

ABOUT MINHO

The areas of Minho extend from the Spanish border in the north, south to Porto and east to the mountains of Vila Real. It is a green and fertile area of rolling hills encompassing the great rivers Minho, Lima and Douro, and the National Park of Peneda Geres. The countryside of the region is typified by long, sandy beaches bordered by pine woods, picturesque villages nestling among vine-covered hills, and historic towns such as Amarante, Guimaraes, Barcelos, Ponte de Lima, and Viana do Castelo.

The area encompasses a range of postcard-worthy landscapes and features that could almost be Portugal in microcosm: dreamy river scenes, high mountains, rolling vineyards, beautiful historic towns, dramatic Atlantic beaches, ancient religious foundations and mysterious archaeological sites.

Then there's the bold, sharp and fruity Vinho Verde to consider. This young wine is fashioned from the fruit of kilometres of vineyards that wind along rivers, over foothills and into Minho mountain villages.

But while you're enjoying one of our fantastic villas in Minho, you may well want to take some time out from all that sun worship to explore everything else the region has to offer – so we've put together this handy travel guide to give you a little help and inspiration!

Villa Homem is perfect for a family holiday. It is a stunning property with a large garden and a brilliant swimming pool. There is an amazing beach across the road and many others close by. The medieval city of Viana do Castelo and its stunning Santa Luzia Church, perched high above on the hill are wonderful to visit. Children also enjoy paddling and swimming in the rivers. You can hire kayaks and mess about on the river. It is such good fun! Children also love using cable cars. You can take one at Guimareas and also enjoy the vernicular railway visiting Viana do Castelo and Bom Jesus. The Portuguese funicular transport that connects the upper town of Braga with the shrine is always popular with families. It crosses 274 metres of the slope of the hill to reach the Bom Jesus. It is the oldest funicular that moves by water-counterbalancing. Amid the lush greenery, the ride is very enjoyable.

Porto is an easy day trip from the villa. The Crystal Palace Gardens in Downtown Porto are lovely. The contemporary museum, Serralves, is designed by the famous Portuguese architect Siza Veira and has a huge attractive garden. You can take a boat trip to see the city’s wonderful bridges over the Douro. The 250 year old Torre dos Clerigos offers some of the best views of the city. There are 240 steps to the top of the baroque 76 metre tower. The city park, Parque de Cidade, stretches from the western end of Avenue da Boavista to the oceanfront at Praia do Castello do Queijo. It is perfect for a picnic and you can also visit Porto’s Sea Life Centre. The World of Discoveries Museum is interactive and child friendly. It charts the odyssey of the early Portuguese navigators and famous explorers including Vasco da Gama and Pedro Alvares Cabral. There are two zoos in Porto. You can feed the penguins at Santo Inacio Zoo or enjoy the tigers, leopards, bears and flamingoes at Zoo da Maia.

Reviews

  • Great Villa in the heart of a beautiful village

    on 25/08/2023

We stayed at Villa Homem, 11 people, 3 generation. Very comfortable accommodation in the heart of a beautiful village Afife. Property management, Luis and his associate Andrea were very helpful and pleasant to answer to our questions and give us recommendations. Highly recommend this vacationing place.

  • Great Villa

    on 18/08/2023

Great villa, and good service from the company.

  • The house is excellent

    on 06/12/2021

The house is excellent. The location is fantastic. We were staying in winter so didn't get a chance to use the pool, but the house is super comfortable even in colder temps. The seaside walks are just around the corner! It was a weekend very well spent. We highly recommend it.

  • Ideal for groups

    on 27/10/2021

Very cosy and spacious house, especially the lounge, dining room and outside area.
    Ideal for groups.
The only downside is that some of the showers were not draining properly.
The person in charge of our check-in was very attentive. Always available by wasap if we needed anything or if we had any questions.

  • Just like the photos

    on 27/09/2021

The house is just like the photos, actually better, because the photos can not capture as well as human vision, the sea on the horizon, given the proximity of the sea, thus giving a privileged location to the house - quiet and peaceful place! Well equipped house and very, very cosy.

  • Definite recommendation!

    on 13/09/2021

Together with a group of 13 we had 7 great days at the house! The location is amazing, the way too the beach isn’t too long and the supermarket is in reasonable distance as well.
Ricardo (or as w call him Ricardinho) was always available and made our stay very pleasant. The house offers all the things a larger group needs for relaxing but also joyful stay.

  • Super spacious house

    on 06/08/2021

We loved our stay here in Afife. The house is super spacious and has everything you need. It’s located close to many kite and surf spots along the coast and has plenty of space to store and clean all your gear even with 12 ppl. Parking situation is very convenient and the beds and bathrooms are very clean and nice. Internet is stable and there’s plenty of space if you have to work remote.
Ricardo was always available for our many requests and helped us with everything we asked for. One of the highlights was the private chef for one evening that cooked for us in the Villa. Amazing food and wine! We would love to come back again!

  • Great weekend

    on 17/07/2021

We had a great weekend. The house is exactly as in the photos. It has everything you need to spend a few days. It is in a quiet area and close to amenities such as supermarket, pharmacy and bars.
    We will definitely repeat :)
