The Resort
Chamonix is often preceded by its own reputation. As one of the most famous ski resorts in the world, it has visitors travelling from all corners of the world to experience the epic runs year after year. The Chamonix town centre, also known as Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, is an endlessly inviting little city with enough going on to entertain skiers and non-skiers alike for weeks on end. For those travelling from the UK, it is fabulously easy to reach. You can drive straight from Calais by motorway and be set up in a gorgeous chalet in less than half a day.
The Chamonix Valley encompasses five main ski areas on four different mountains (with easy transfers in between). You can get yourself a single-resort lift pass or one that encompasses the whole valley. If you go with the latter option you’ll even have access to the Italian side of the valley in Courmayeur. The wider area encompasses 106 pistes at up to 3842m altitude and unparalleled off-piste runs.
Most of Chamonix’s ski areas are best suited to those who already feel at home on a pair of skis. Beginners definitely won’t get as much out of this valley as those who are comfortable tackling a black run. But that’s not saying Chamonix is unromantic by any means. There is incredible scenery for everyone to enjoy, from non-skiers to experts, and nature lovers will fall in love with the Chamonix in summer too. Ski season, however, often lasts until mid-March.
Once the skiing is over at the end of the day you’ll still find plenty to keep you occupied in town. There is an excellent selection of restaurants to choose from, ranging from Michelin starred fine dining to street food that will line your stomach for the après-ski (and rest assured there are dozens of great bars and clubs to choose from!)
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChamonix stands out as a superb destination for families, offering a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The ski resort caters to all levels of skiers, making it an ideal choice for families with varying skill levels. Parents will appreciate the numerous ski schools specializing in teaching children as young as 3 years old. Kids can be enrolled in half or full-day lessons, with options for additional childcare services, including pre and post-lesson care, as well as lunch facilities.
For non-skiing youngsters, Chamonix provides nursery facilities and engaging children's clubs with fun activities. Even toddlers under the age of 3 can experience the thrill of downhill action on small slopes behind the tennis court or near the cross-country tracks. Sledging options are available at Les Planards and the top of Prarion in Les Houches, with many ski hire shops offering sledges for sale or rent.
For a more relaxed experience, families can catch the latest blockbusters at Chamonix's multiscreen cinema, Cinema Vox, with many films available in English. The town's charm extends beyond the snowy season, ensuring that families can enjoy a delightful mix of adventure and leisure throughout the year.
Winter
Chamonix is a superb ski resort with slopes for all levels of skiers and there are excellent facilities for the kids.
There are several ski schools that specialise in teaching children from the age of 3. Children can be signed up for half or full days with upgrades available to include childcare before or after the lesson and lunch if required. There are also nursery facilities and children’s clubs for fun activities. Chamonix offers plenty of other activities for children that do not ski and for children under the age of 3. Babies and toddlers can get a taste for some downhill action on the small slopes in Chamonix with free slopes behind the tennis court and next to the cross-country tracks. Sledges can be taken onto dedicated slopes at Les Planards or at the top of Prarion in Les Houches. Many of the ski hire shops will sell or rent sledges.
For the ultimate treat why not take the kids for a husky ride. Every Wednesday, subject to snow conditions, you can learn to drive your own sled from 8 years old or enjoy the ride as a passenger from any age. This is a really popular attraction so do book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Chamonix’s Alpine Coaster is great fun. Children can ride the luge along the 1300m track at the bottom of the Les Planards beginner ski area in the town centre. Children can ride from 3 years old and unaccompanied from 7 years old.
Paret sledging is another fabulous, thrilling adventure in traditional wooden sledges with one runner. Children aged 12 and above and adults brave enough, can take part from the upper slopes of Grands Montets. Older kids can take part in a Deluxe Igloo and Fondue Adventure, riding a 3km sledging track and hiking in snowshoes to a real snow igloo for a traditional cheese fondue.
