The Resort
Val d’Isere is the oldest of the French ski resorts and a gleaming icon at the end of the valley where the residential town lies. Surrounded by what is arguably some of the most beautiful mountain landscape in the world, the chalet village is centred around a charming baroque church. It’s a lovely place for wandering, taking in the cosy atmosphere and spending quality time with your favourite people.
Val d’Isere is composed of three skiing sections. These are La Daille, Val d’Isere centre and Le Fornet, all of which are linked by a free shuttle service. Alongside Tignes, the resort is part of a wider ski area known as Espace Killy, and a lift pass will get you access to its entirety. Ski season in both resorts stretches as long as May.
Thanks to its high altitude, Val d’Isere is probably your most snow sure option for skiing in the French Alps. The village rests at 1850 metres and its peak on top of the La Grande Motte glacier is 3456 metres high. Sixty per cent of the resort’s pistes are set above 2200 metres, meaning that the skiing is consistently good but on rare occasions, bad weather can cause the slopes to close. It’s also important to keep in mind that Val d’Isere isn’t the best choice if you’re just finding your feet on the snow, and beginners may well find themselves challenged. On the flipside, Val d’Isere is one of the top choices for experienced skiers and snowboarders, with plenty of challenging black runs (such as the iconic Face the Bellevarde, where the 1992 Olympic men’s downhill was run).
And to go with some of the most exciting and picturesque skiing in France, down in the village you’ll find some amazing bars and restaurants. What better way to celebrate conquering that tricky black run than by indulging in some equally entertaining après-ski? On the mountain itself, you can start your evening with DJ’s and live music at La Folie Douce until the lifts close and then work your way into town.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesApartment Sylvian isn't just a cosy haven for adults—it's a kid-friendly retreat that seamlessly combines comfort with family-friendly features. Step into the open-plan living space adorned in light neutral tones, where the atmosphere is sophisticated and inviting for little ones to explore. The centrepiece is a plush sofa bed, beckoning kids to dive into its softness for a movie night or a good bedtime story.
Worried about stairs? Fret not! This apartment is a staircase-free zone, ensuring that little feet can roam freely and safely. As you unwind in the living area, the kids can catch their favourite shows on the TV or stay connected with the outside world thanks to WiFi—a saviour for both entertainment and educational purposes.
The well-equipped kitchen is a bonus for families with picky eaters or those who prefer homemade meals. With high-end appliances like a combination oven/microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, raclette machine, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine, and toaster, whipping up a quick and delicious family meal becomes a breeze.
If parents would rather take the sofa bed in the lounge area, the apartment’s bedroom features a double bed that can magically transform into two singles, making it ideal for siblings or friends who want to share a room. An armchair and a wardrobe complete the space, creating a cosy retreat after a day of alpine adventures. The balcony boasts stunning mountain views and becomes a playground for young imaginations.
Winter
But the kid-friendly wonders don't end at the apartment door. Val d'Isère itself is a treasure trove of family-friendly attractions. The Solaise Express Olympique lift, just a stone's throw away, opens up a world of snowy delights suitable for all skill levels. The absence of stairs is a blessing when returning from a day on the slopes with tired legs and sleepy kids.
Val d'Isère's picturesque charm extends beyond the ski slopes. Imagine your little one's joy as they explore the preserved old village, its narrow lanes, and the delightful addresses that are just as inviting to pint-sized adventurers. And let's not forget the ski school, a mere 10 metres away, ready to turn your little snowflakes into confident skiers.
With the icing on the cake being the long winter season from late November to early May, Apartment Sylvian in Val d'Isère isn't just a vacation spot; it's a family-friendly hub where both adults and kids can create lasting memories in the heart of the Alps. So, pack your bags, grab the kiddos, and get ready for an Alpine adventure that the whole family will cherish.
Summer
While Val d'Isère is renowned for its winter charm, the summer season unveils a different side of the Alps. The ski school, located just 10 meters away, may be dormant in summer, but the surrounding nature provides a new set of adventures, from hiking trails to outdoor activities suitable for families.
