The luxurious Chalet Fresse oozes character and charm with its traditional beams, vaulted ceilings, double height aspect, roaring fireplaces and lavish furnishings. It boasts five gorgeous bedroom suites, charismatic living spaces, an additional cosy television snug and balconies offering sensational panoramic views. Chalet Fresse enjoys a unique location in a sun-drenched corner of Val d'Isère's main village, perfect for apres-ski, shopping, wandering around the historic centre and enjoying the resort’s non-snow-based activities.

Val d'Isère boasts a reputation as one of Europe’s most prestigious ski resorts. Together with the neighbouring ski area of Tignes, the Espace Killy area offers an impressive number of pistes and lifts, together with breathtaking scenery with its dramatic Grande Motte glacier. The resort is excellent for all levels with nursery pistes, magic carpets, excellent ski instructors and even a few free lifts and slopes for beginners.

Chalet Fresse offers a helpful ski room with a seating area on the ground floor, four bedrooms on the first floor, a further bedroom and living areas on the second floor together with a large balcony with a hot tub and a snug on the top floor. The almost entirely wooden bedrooms are utterly charming and superbly comfortable with lavish beds, crisp cottons and gorgeous throws and scatter cushions. They are a mix of twin rooms and doubles with kingsize beds. Each of the bedrooms in Chalet Fresse enjoys a beautifully tiled bathroom, mostly with baths and overhead showers though one offers just a shower.

As well as being home to the remaining double bedroom, the second floor is where you will find your luxurious living spaces. The living room is a total wonder with a roaring fireplace in the corner, a fabulous feature of the room. This part of the living space enjoys double height aspect with glass doors opening to a terrace and giant picture windows up to the ceiling offering fabulous views. Between the living area and the country style kitchen is a fabulous giant Savoyard oak dining table and chairs, perfect for meals for the whole group.

A charming wooden spiral staircase leads you upstairs to the cosy snug. This is the perfect place to enjoy a movie, family games and stunning views through the huge floor-to-ceiling picture windows.

Val d'Isère enjoys a simply fabulous location within the mountain tops on the border of the stunning Vanoise National Park. The town’s authentic atmosphere, gorgeous historic centre, endless chocolate-box chalets, unique boutiques and fantastic bars and eateries make it a hot spot for skiers and summer walkers. It is nestled in a valley and is linked with the mighty Tignes, offering a massive ski playground. Val d'Isère's snowfall record is brilliant with skiing usually staying open until the end of the season at the beginning of May. The centre of Val d'Isère is a bustling high street which is surrounded by a number of small hamlets including Le Cret, Le Joseray, Le Chatelard, La Legettaz and Le Laisinant.

The Espace Killy area including Tignes is the birthplace of the Olympic skier Jean-Claude Killy. Its connections and advanced ski infrastructure is excellent with more than 3400 km of pistes and 99 lifts. As well as the Grande Motte glacier which offers 20 km of summer ski runs, it also boasts the challenging black-rated piste, Face de Bellevarde with its 915 m drop. Its height altitude from 1850 m to 3400 m guarantees some of the best snow in Europe. The ski area is perfect for all levels of skiers with its mythical slopes, almighty challenges and its quiet ski areas for beginners and children. The Valkids area and Valpark, a brilliant snow park are welcome additions for families.

Once your ski day is finished, Val’ d'Isère is a great place for a wander, for evening entertainment and for shopping. It is picturesque with a 17th century church in the centre and delightful, characterful shops, restaurants and bars. It is a known party destination with La Folie Douce being one of it main evening attractions. For those that don’t ski or want a day off, there are some excellent spas and a brilliant leisure centre. During the summer, Val d'Isère enjoys fabulous biking and hiking trails and the wonderful Vanoise National Park.

The Resort

Val d’Isere is the oldest of the French ski resorts and a gleaming icon at the end of the valley where the residential town lies. Surrounded by what is arguably some of the most beautiful mountain landscape in the world, the chalet village is centred around a charming baroque church. It’s a lovely place for wandering, taking in the cosy atmosphere and spending quality time with your favourite people.

Val d’Isere is composed of three skiing sections. These are La Daille, Val d’Isere centre and Le Fornet, all of which are linked by a free shuttle service. Alongside Tignes, the resort is part of a wider ski area known as Espace Killy, and a lift pass will get you access to its entirety. Ski season in both resorts stretches as long as May.

Thanks to its high altitude, Val d’Isere is probably your most snow sure option for skiing in the French Alps. The village rests at 1850 metres and its peak on top of the La Grande Motte glacier is 3456 metres high. Sixty per cent of the resort’s pistes are set above 2200 metres, meaning that the skiing is consistently good but on rare occasions, bad weather can cause the slopes to close. It’s also important to keep in mind that Val d’Isere isn’t the best choice if you’re just finding your feet on the snow, and beginners may well find themselves challenged. On the flipside, Val d’Isere is one of the top choices for experienced skiers and snowboarders, with plenty of challenging black runs (such as the iconic Face the Bellevarde, where the 1992 Olympic men’s downhill was run).

And to go with some of the most exciting and picturesque skiing in France, down in the village you’ll find some amazing bars and restaurants. What better way to celebrate conquering that tricky black run than by indulging in some equally entertaining après-ski? On the mountain itself, you can start your evening with DJ’s and live music at La Folie Douce until the lifts close and then work your way into town.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages

Chalet Fresse is brilliant for families. It enjoys five bedrooms so it is ideal for multi-generational families or perhaps two families. At the end of a busy day, children can happily watch a movie in the snug while the adults relax downstairs.

Val d'Isère is an excellent resort for families. It boasts three main beginners areas and a brilliant selection of ski schools and private ski instructors who make the experience fun and exciting. For very young ones, there are a few slopes and lifts at the bottom of the resort that are free and you do not need to buy a ski pass. This includes the ‘Le Village’ chairlift and the ‘La Savonette’ button lift which are in the heart of the resort. There are some good value family passes available. The ski schools have mastered the art of combining skiing with fun activities so that children enjoy the experience.

Aside from skiing or snowboarding, children enjoy many other snow-based and non-snow-based activities in Val d'Isère. Sledging is such good fun and the good old-fashioned snow ball fights remain so popular. There are husky sleigh rides and tobogganing to enjoy too. Snake gliss is a fun ride with sledges slotted together for children aged four and over.

Val d'Isère's sports centre is excellent with an ice rink, swimming pools, tennis, a climbing wall, electric snowmobiles with a track designed for children aged five to twelve and much more.
