The Resort
Val d’Isere is the oldest of the French ski resorts and a gleaming icon at the end of the valley where the residential town lies. Surrounded by what is arguably some of the most beautiful mountain landscape in the world, the chalet village is centred around a charming baroque church. It’s a lovely place for wandering, taking in the cosy atmosphere and spending quality time with your favourite people.
Val d’Isere is composed of three skiing sections. These are La Daille, Val d’Isere centre and Le Fornet, all of which are linked by a free shuttle service. Alongside Tignes, the resort is part of a wider ski area known as Espace Killy, and a lift pass will get you access to its entirety. Ski season in both resorts stretches as long as May.
Thanks to its high altitude, Val d’Isere is probably your most snow sure option for skiing in the French Alps. The village rests at 1850 metres and its peak on top of the La Grande Motte glacier is 3456 metres high. Sixty per cent of the resort’s pistes are set above 2200 metres, meaning that the skiing is consistently good but on rare occasions, bad weather can cause the slopes to close. It’s also important to keep in mind that Val d’Isere isn’t the best choice if you’re just finding your feet on the snow, and beginners may well find themselves challenged. On the flipside, Val d’Isere is one of the top choices for experienced skiers and snowboarders, with plenty of challenging black runs (such as the iconic Face the Bellevarde, where the 1992 Olympic men’s downhill was run).
And to go with some of the most exciting and picturesque skiing in France, down in the village you’ll find some amazing bars and restaurants. What better way to celebrate conquering that tricky black run than by indulging in some equally entertaining après-ski? On the mountain itself, you can start your evening with DJ’s and live music at La Folie Douce until the lifts close and then work your way into town.
Kids
Best Suited For: All AgesChalet Marmotte is brilliant for family ski holidays. It boasts five beautiful bedroom suites including a family one with twin beds and a cosy bunk bed space, perfect for two children. The open plan living space works very well and there are televisions in every bedroom, perfect for when children need to settle down with a movie after a tiring day.
Val d’Isere is an excellent ski resort for families with brilliant snow records and fantastic slopes. The resort boasts three main beginners areas and a fabulous selection of ski schools and private ski instructors who make the experience fun and exciting. For very young ones, there are a few slopes and lifts at the bottom of the resort that are free and you do not need to buy a ski pass. This includes the ‘Le Village’ chairlift and the ‘La Savonette’ button lift which are in the heart of the resort. At the top of the Solaise, there is another excellent beginner area with two magic carpets, a great way to learn with confidence. There are some good value family passes available. The ski schools have mastered the art of combining skiing with fun activities so that children enjoy the experience. Val Kids is an exciting adventure programme for little ones. They learn about the mountain, the skiing and the people who work there. Val Kids is divided into four zones, one a playground to understand about the different jobs in the resort, another a fun piste with games, another an thrilling toboggan run and lastly a mini ski-cross course for learning new ski techniques. Val Kids is located on Solaise and Bellevarde.
Children enjoy many other snow-based and non-snow-based activities in Val d’Isere. Sledging is brilliant fun and the good old-fashioned snow ball fights remain so popular. There are husky sleigh rides and tobogganing to enjoy too. Snake gliss is a fun ride with sledges slotted together for children aged four and over. Yooner is a sledge on one ski for six year olds and Airboard is a bodyboard on snow for those aged nine and over.
For part of the ski season, Val d’Isere hosts a traditional pedestrian evening with illuminations, percussion music, giant snow sculptures and light shows. There is lots of hot chocolate and mulled wine on offer. The resort also hosts giant slalom races on the Savonette slopes.
Val d’Isere’s sports centre is excellent with an ice rink, swimming pools, tennis, a climbing wall, electric snowmobiles with a track designed for children aged five to twelve and much more.
