While the region’s endless vineyards, picturesque villages and unforgettable sunsets have brought about many comparisons with Italy’s Tuscany region, this little-known rural gem in the heart of Slovenia is a bewitching location with charms all of its own.

For wine lovers and those interested in gastronomic experiences, the Brda region offers visitors the opportunity to fully indulge in some delectable dining experiences. From visits to local farmsteads and olive groves to an in-depth tour of a traditional wine cellar, you will be sure to feel the power of this region’s ancient connection with its land. The villa’s host can help rent mountain bikes or electric bikes so that you can easily make your way from one culinary sensation to another, working up an appetite along the way. The region is not only famous for its fantastic wine. For something a little different, you can also visit local beekeepers and honey producers, where you can taste some of the natural goodness Brda’s bees have produced.

From your peaceful hillside home, the sandy beaches of the Adriatic Sea are well within reach by car. Cross the border and soak up the sun on the Italian coastline for a change of scenery. Make your way to Sistiana Bay, where you can spend the day swimming on the beach of Castelreggio, overlooked by the impressive Duino Cliffs. The beach is ideal for families, with activities such as boat tours, plenty of pizzerias, and cafes in case you decide to stay and watch the sun go down over the sparkling blue water.

Closer to home, the emerald-green river of Soča Valley is a majestic sight. Here, there are activities such as kayaking, rafting and canyoning to keep adventure seekers happy. There are also three excellent golf courses in close proximity to the villa, each with unforgettable views. The medieval village of Šmartno is only five minutes from Kojsko by car. This entire walled village, with its charming cobblestone pathways and beautiful architecture, has been declared a cultural heritage monument. Visit for an afternoon stroll and a leisurely lunch at one of the lovely local restaurants. With Brda’s annual wine festival and cherry festival taking place here, you will surely find yourself enchanted by the village’s sweet natural beauty. From here, it’s back to your gorgeous villa for a sunset swim and an evening to remember.

Region

The heavenly Brda region of Slovenia is a picturesque paradise of vineyards, ancient architecture and characterful villages. Nestled in the heart of Slovenia, Brda is truly inviting with its idyllic landscapes, historic architecture, delicious wines and wide array of attractions. This enchanting region, often referred to as "Slovenian Tuscany," offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage and outdoor adventures.

One of Brda's most captivating features is its lush vineyards, which sprawl across the rolling hills. The region's favourable climate and terrain create an optimal setting for cultivating grapes, earning it a well-deserved reputation for producing high-quality wines. Local wineries invite guests to sample a variety of wines, from fruity Rebula to a robust Merlot. Many of these wineries offer tours and tastings, where you can learn about the winemaking process and meet the passionate vintners who have carried on the tradition for generations. The Dobrovo Castle, home to the Brda Wine Cellar, is an excellent starting point for your wine journey.

The region is sprinkled with picturesque villages, each with its unique character and attractions. The charming villages of Dobrovo, Šmartno and Gonjace feature well-preserved buildings that reflect the rich heritage of the region. Dobrovo Castle, a Renaissance masterpiece, is home to the aforementioned Brda Wine Cellar and the Zaloščan Memorial Room, which pays homage to the local resistance movement during World War II. Šmartno, encircled by a medieval defensive wall, is a quaint village with cobblestone streets, offering a glimpse into the past. At Gonjace, you should not miss the Church of St. Sylvester, known for its stunning frescoes that date back to the 15th century.

To fully appreciate the beauty of Brda, you can embark on a leisurely bike ride or a hike through the vineyards and orchards. There are numerous well-marked trails that offer sensational panoramic views of the region, making it an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

While Brda itself offers an abundance of activities, it is also strategically located to explore nearby attractions. Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana, is within a comfortable driving distance. The Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are another must-visit destination, offering a fascinating underground world of immense chambers and underground rivers.

The Brda regions of Slovenia is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends natural beauty, rich history, its amazing wine industry and outdoor activities. Whether you're strolling through vineyards, exploring historic villages or engaging in hands-on cultural experiences, Brda welcomes visitors with its warm hospitality and diverse activities. This charming region promises an unforgettable journey filled with memories that will last a lifetime, making it a perfect choice for families and travellers of all ages.
