Villa Mazo is a stunning modern four-bedroom villa for up to eight guests is located just a short drive away from the quintessential whitewashed town of Mijas and offers beautiful panoramic views that stretch all the way across the mountainous countryside and down to the twinkling sea beyond.

The home itself is shaped like an 'L', creating a sense of separation between the sociable living spaces, which include a large open-plan sunken seating area and a stylish, state-of-the-art kitchen with an adjoining dining table – all of which look over an open onto the swimming pool – and the tranquil bedrooms, also with wonderfully calming views.

Entering the home on the first floor, you will find yourself first greeted by the main living areas. Characterised by their high ceilings, huge floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open out to the terrace and the invitingly turquoise swimming pool, and a sleek minimalist style that still manages to exude a certain retro glamour – thanks to cool features such as the freestanding central stone fireplace and expertly-placed splashes of bright colour – these spaces are bright, versatile, and offer endless opportunities for socialising as well as moments of serenity. We especially love how the sliding doors on two sides can be opened all the way, effectively disappearing and giving the entire room over to the great outdoors, therefore allowing that magnificent mountain view to becoming part of the living space.

On the ground level, you will find an incredibly well-equipped modern gym filled with all the fitness equipment you could need to work off any of those holiday excesses during your stay. Start your day off the right way with a run on the treadmill while admiring the mountains, or step out onto the lower terrace for a little yoga in the morning sun. This lower terrace, partly covered in grass, also houses a pool table, ping pong, and foosball, as well as some trendy hanging chairs into which you can climb and lose yourself in a good book. On this level, one that is cut into the hill itself, you will also find a dedicated TV/cinema room that's perfect for curling up with a classic, catching up on the latest binge-worthy series, or finding a new family film favourite.

A design-forward floating exterior staircase takes you back past the ground level and up to the first floor, where you’ll find the bedrooms, all of which are ensuite, offering access to the wraparound first-floor balcony and finished in their own distinctive funky yet minimalist style. Each has bespoke fitted wardrobes and bright artwork that add life to the otherwise monochrome palette.

Located in the relatively quiet urbanisation of Voltacado and set amid a dramatic, unspoiled landscape – yet still within easy reach of lovely Mijas and only a fifteen-minute drive to the coast at Fuengirola – this villa provides you with a taste of pure tranquillity, and amenities, action, and adventure when you want it.

What you should know…

  • This home is spread over two levels with no lift and an outdoor staircase, so it might not be a good choice for guests with mobility issues.
  • In the interest of safety, any little ones must be supervised at all times when around the pool area – particularly as it is directly accessible from the living room. The same, of course, goes for the first-floor wraparound balcony.

We think that the location of Villa Mazo offers you the best of both worlds; feeling at once wonderfully rural and relaxed, set amid the spellbinding scenery of the mountains while being just a short drive away from both the ever-popular and unmistakably Spanish town of Mijas. There you will find winding cobbled laneways lined with traditional whitewashed villas, and further towards the coast is the lively area of Fuengirola: home to a myriad of cafes, bars, and restaurants that are popular with tourists and the Spanish alike.

Spend a day exploring the must-see Mijas, soaking in the authentic and slightly slower pace of life here. There are loads of cultural and historical sights not to be missed in this unassuming little town, including the fortress (from where you can enjoy spectacular views as you meander along its impressive walls) and the shrine to the Virgen de la Pena, the Patron Saint of Mijas, on the Paseo ‘El Compas’ in Mijas village. There’s a surprising array of shopping opportunities, too, with family-owned boutique stores selling everything from artisanal food produce to locally-made crafts and unique clothing items. You can also pick up leather goods, jewellery, ceramics, and even handmade chocolate from the town’s tiny chocolate factory! There’s also a flamenco school in Mijas, as well as the occasional free performance of the traditional Spanish dance in the Plaza Virgen de la Pena.

Take the fifteen-minute drive down towards the coast, and the pace of life changes somewhat but is no less beguiling. Spend a day catching a few rays and catching up on your reading on the soft golden sands of Fuengirola’s beaches, perhaps popping into one of the nearby waterfront eateries for a light lunch and an ice-cold cerveza (as long as you’re not the one driving home).

Right around the villa, you’ll find some great hiking and biking trails that will take you through this spectacular scenery while helping you to work up a sweat and an appetite for a delicious home-cooked meal.

Although Villa Mazo does have a distinctly grown-up, almost rockstar-esque vibe, it is actually quite child-friendly and could make for a great choice for a family escape to the Spanish sunshine.

Little ones will love the games area, and the fact that this is on the lower ground floor and to the rear of the property makes it pretty safe for them – while the grassy areas mean they can run around, wrestle, and rough and tumble with each other without the risk of scraped knees! Teach them how to play ping pong, fire up their competitive streaks with some foosball, or simply park them in the dedicated TV room for an hour or two – giving both you and them a chance to relax. There are loads to keep them busy and entertained here, tiring them out in time for bed. Speaking of beds, two of the upstairs bedrooms offer twin beds that are ideal for kids and teens sharing a room.

They’ll also love exploring the local area, and taking them out on the nearby hiking trails is a great way to get them to develop their appreciation for nature, while the memories of a fun-filled family day down at the coast are sure to stay with them long after your return home.
