Five-bedroom Asturorum House – with its large private pool, spacious areas and contemporary-cool décor – oozes luxury. The modern villa is set in a secluded enclave in the coastal town of Sanxenxo, Spain. From its terraces, you can spot four of the most famous lighthouses in Galicia – on Ons Island, the Cíes Islands and Capes Home and Udra – plus, you’ll get those ooh-worthy ocean views.

Thanks to its landscaped gardens – over 10,000 square feet, in fact – there’s of plenty of space for you to kick back and relax. On the soft grass with a book? By the pool in the sun? Beside the private heated pool, lined with cushioned loungers, there are chairs and an alfresco dining table, too. Put your feet up here with a glass of wine and take in the peaceful surrounds.

This villa was designed by a famous local architect, so you can expect clean lines and light and open spaces – courtesy of the well-thought-out layout and large glass windows and walls. A local artist put their mark on the property, too, which is evident in the mural paintings dotted around the villa.

Tech-savvy – there are electric blinds, motorised windows, plus a large television in the living room and the main bedrooms. One of the bathrooms has a hydromassage bathtub, so you can soothe those muscles while gazing at the Atlantic Islands National Park from the window. Oh, and did we mention there’s underfloor heating and air conditioning in each room, too? You’re welcome. Take your pick from two super king bedrooms, one king and two twin rooms – sleeping up to ten guests – which makes this villa perfect for families or groups of friends who are sharing.

If you’d like to eat in, there’s a fully-equipped kitchen plus an indoor dining table, so mealtimes are a real treat. You can pick up your fresh produce in Sanxenxo or try the restaurants there, serving local delicacies like fresh seafood. Asturorum House is a short 10-minute stroll from the nearest sandy beach, too, so you’ll have no issues working on that pool to beach routine.

Asturorum House is in a peaceful spot, overlooking the sea, in the Spanish town of Sanzenxo in Pontevedra, Galicia. This relatively untouched gem is different from other Spanish hotspots like Barcelona and the Costas, thanks to its green valleys, rugged mountains and wild beaches. Think bagpipes playing and baroque cathedrals, too – so, you might feel more like you’re in Scotland than Spain. Thanks to the villa’s seafront location, there’s plenty of opportunities to get involved with watersports like swimming, snorkelling and sea kayaking, too. Sanxenxo Beach has soft sands and calm waters and is only a 10-minute stroll away.

For fun days out, you can head to nearby Pontevedra – known for its well-preserved old town and Gothic Santa María la Mayor Basilica. You can snap pictures of the historic churches and charming squares here, before sampling local cuisine in one of the bars and restaurants. Fresh seafood like octopus, or other Galician specialities like empanada gallega – a large pie usually filled with meat – are on the menu, and are usually washed down with a glass of the region’s famous Albarino wine.

More worth-exploring cities include Vilanova de Cerveira and Caminha. You could also make tracks for Vigo, Porto or Tui. The latter is a Romanesque and gothic village that’s steeped in history.

About the Region & Getting There

About Galicia

Like many parts of Spain, Galicia has its very own identity that has remained intact through its regional dialect and distinguishing culture. Although Galicia is recognised for its holy traditions, we urge budding tourists to also consider its astonishing green countryside & rivers and its UNESCO World Heritage sites. Occasionally you may even hear the gentle tootling of bagpipes, known locally as the Galician Gaita, along this northern corner of the Iberian Peninsula.

You're likely to fly into Santiago de Compostela, which is the capital of Galicia and is probably best known for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and its route. Many of the travellers embark on this journey by foot and tend to be mesmerised by this fine city at the end of their trek. Casco Viejo, or the Old Town, is a good place to end or even start your holiday. This area of the city is blessed with markets, restaurants, bars and buildings from a bygone era. After exhausting yourself in the busyness of the city, take a day trip to Praia de Rodas, on the gorgeous Cíes Islands. These small islands, accessible by boat from Vigo, Baiona, or Cangas, have been noted as having some of the best beaches in the world. It has to be seen to be believed!

Galicia is divided into four key regions: A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and our favourite – Pontevedra. A Galician proverb states that 'Pontevedra gives water to travellers'. We firmly believe this to be true, as this particular part of Galicia has everything a traveller could need for an unforgettable experience and it almost feels like this city is constantly giving back. Whilst you holiday in Pontevedra you will realise that days are structured around mealtime. And why wouldn't they be? With some of the best seafood you will experience in Spain and the noteworthy Albariño wine, you may notice your jeans feeling a little tighter toward the end of your holiday. You will be glad to know that your waistline need not be a cause for concern though! Pontevedra is blessed with some of the best hiking trails, medieval monasteries, estuaries, and valleys within Spain. Don't forget about the coastline either! Rarely you will you find so many empty beaches, so make the most of this privacy and just embrace the nature around you.

Galicia is still an unspoilt part of the world. It has everything a diverse group of friends & family need to have a glorious adventure.

Getting There

Galicia is served by either Santiago de Compostela Airport, A Coruña Airport, or Vigo Airport. Various train lines connect the main cities and towns of Galicia to other destinations in Northern and Central Spain (and even Portugal). There are also vairous coach routes that you can take throughout the region and to other cities in Spain.

From the UK:
Direct flights are available from London with easyJet, Ryanair, Vueling, and many others. Although, travellers should be aware that Vigo Airport only receives domestic flights, so a stopover is needed if you wish to travel to this airport. Chartered flights are also available from several other UK airports.

Kids

Best Suited For: All Ages
Ideal for Kids Ideal for Teens

Thanks to its private garden, big pool and large open spaces, Asturorum House is an ideal choice for families with children. The villa’s only a 10-minute walk from the nearest sandy beach, where kids young and old can swim in the calm waters, and is also near to all the amenities of Sanxenxo town.

For fun family day trips, you can head into Pontevedra and explore the historic old town and pretty churches. Or, make tracks for other sight-packed places like Tui. At the latter, you can climb to the top of the mountain of Aloia for wow-worthy views of the Louro valley below.

You could also visit Dunas de Corrubedo – a natural park with a big sand dune that kids can roll down to reach Playa do Vilar Beach. You could also hop on a boat to Illas Cies – a footprint-free group of islands off the coast of Vigo – where you can swim and scuba dive in the surrounding waters.

Reviews

  • When we return to Galicia this will definitely be our first option

    on 10/08/2022

I spent the last week of July in this property. The hous is spectacular, very well decorated, and in a magnificent location with the best views. All of the details are of the high quality and the kitchenware is the best.

It is very close to Lanzada beach (my favourite in the area), and to Montalvo and Sanxenxo beaches. To eat, you have O Grove, Portonovo, Bueu.... you're in Galicia so practically in every area you will be eating well. Also, you have two good restaurants close to the house that you can walk to.

To go out at night you have Sanxenxo which is just 10 minutes away by car.

The owners (Patricia and Enrique) are super attentive to whatever thing you may need.

When we return to Galicia this will definitely be our first option.

  • The ideal place to spend a few disconnected days away with the family

    on 21/01/2022

The ideal place to spend a few disconnected days away with the family. Fully recommend because the owners are always on hand for whatever you need at any moment.

  • Great!

    on 03/07/2018

The home is modern, comfortable and has great views. Owners are friendly and responsive. Great pool and outdoor area!

  • Love shows in so many of the house’s details

    on 26/05/2018

My wife and I travel all over the place for food. Yes there is culture, significance, beauty and meaning to be found in so many places, but culinary tradition in beautiful settings is what speaks most directly, and certainly most often, to us. We love to cook and so when traveling we opt for rentals with kitchens over hotels whenever it makes sense. Sure we spend months researching and reserving the restaurants we want to visit, but we find the ability to source top quality local ingredients that we simply can’t get at home and prepare them simply ourselves to be as exciting as most any Michelin star. With this being said, we have stayed Asturorum House twice in as many years and I can say that it may well be our favorite all around rental experience we have encountered, anywhere, to date. The beauty and tradition of the region together with the high level of restaurants and incredible bounty of produce to be found in the area make it tough to beat. Asturorum House is modern luxury perfectly located to relax, entertain and simply enjoy the very best the region has to offer.

Perched on quite hillside, save the occasional rooster or your own music, the terraced private pool and balconies afford secluded views of the ocean and surrounding area while still being close to the markets and restaurants that we most want to visit. With five bedrooms and three bathrooms, the house has ample room. That being said, for us we think the right balance for the flow of the space may be 2 or 3 couples or maybe 1 or 2 small families. The house was built with love by a significant architect in the region, who is also a close friend of the owners, and that love shows in so many of the house’s details. As much as one can say of the house itself, and others rightly have in all of the reviews, I feel just as much of the credit for the wonderful stays we have had here go to the dedicated and delightful owners.

Patricia and Quique. the owners, have been so warm and attentive both before and during our stays at Asturorum House. From helping arrange packages and reservations ahead of our arrival to trouble shooting our needs and requests while we are there. On our last stay there, I mentioned to Patricia that I thought I was coming down with a sore throat and she thoughtfully showed up within the hour having picked up medicine for me. FWIW, I believe my throat was the start of something more serious and she likely saved our vacation… or at least mine (my wife loves me but even with me under the weather, it would be tough to imagine her not enjoying herself here). We wanted to show them our appreciation for all of their time and generosity and so we cooked for them one night and just had a wonderful time together. They were the perfect guests... even in their own house! We consider them both friends now and we look forward to seeing them and Asturorum House again before long.

  • Idyllic situation

    on 31/01/2017

All equipment, furniture and facilities were even better than imagined. The interior decor is unique, simple and tasteful, the colours and paintings of a talented local artist evoking the nearby forests, hills and sea.

A house designed to make the very best of its wonderful location. Extensive use of glass merges the concepts of inside/outside. Although it was winter we could sit anywhere , bath included, and immerse ourselves in the views.

Idyllic situation looking over the village to the sea (beach 10 minutes' walk). With a restaurant (take-away possible) and shop across the street, we had no need of the car although there are many other attractions a short drive away.

We thought it perfect in every way and hope to return to experience the pool and terraces in another season, although even in January the sunshine was superb, allowing us to sit outside for a drink.

  • This is a great place to stay!

    on 24/08/2015

Asturorum House is a fantastic villa with wonderful views in a great spot. It's easily accessible to the many wonderful places to visit and the beautiful coast of Galicia. The owners were always very quick and thorough with their communications and helpful with so many other things we needed whilst staying, such as excursions and babysitting. We asked about hire of a table tennis table for our stay and they provided one for us.
